It was officially dead when your favourite game in the series dropped. Alternately Tri because I hate tribabs.
Having said that every monhun is at least 9/10 and that's never going to change.
Tri truly was the worst entry in the entire series, thankfully they learned from it and didn't do it again.
That being said, the technical improvements with Tri were welcome and needed
Rise was a solid 7/10.
Rise was fun, some of the experimental features sucked, like the spiribird things or whatever they were called, and I also wasn't a huge fan of the wire bugs, but it was an interesting thing to try I guess.
Yeah, it's still Monster hunter, but, the dumb gimmicks are too ingrained in the game and they're just not fun. So, it takes away from the overall experience.
The combat is also just sped up for no particular reason and that feels bad.
I agree except about the sped up combat, I don't really remember that, but it has been a while, but it never felt bad to me.
I never minded the Spiribirds. To me, it was basically a replacement for how older games necessitated that you really prepare for a hunt, making sure you had everything you needed going in because once you started, there was no restocking or changing weapons or anything. Plus, it's entirely optional. I have fun running around my preferred route on each map to get some Hunting Helpers and Spiribirds for whatever hunt I'm in for, but sometimes I go straight to the monster, and having that freedom made me think about how I was going to handle every fight.

Those aren't equivalent and Rise has zero prep with even temp drinks being removed.

You probably think breathing is optional as well. It's shit and you should've been able to use the canteen to max out your stats or better yet just not have been in the game at all.

That's what I'm saying, Spiribirds were basically a replacement for pre-hunt prep time. If you didn't want to engage with it, there was nothing forcing you to, but it would make the hunt marginally more challenging for you. I was never a fan of how World stripped basically all the pre-hunt prep out of it aside from Hot/Cool drinks, and I like how the maps in Rise/Sunbreak actually ask that you engage with them if you want to have an easier time, basically replacing pre-hunt prep with on-hunt awareness.
Monster hunter going from rewarding preparation to just not featuring it at all was easily the worst change.
Agreed, but MHRS having something on-hunt preparation is at least something to engage with, and I enjoyed finding new routes to maximize Spiribird and Helper collection in the shortest amount of time before fighting a monster.
Maybe it was just me coming from Iceborne, which I actively disliked to the point that I never beat it, but there's not much that I really hate in MHRS. Probably the closest thing is just how RNG is involved in armor augmenting in the postgame, but that's about it. Even Rampages were an alright change of pace, and the most engaging a siege-type hunt has been through the whole series, at least personally. Older siege hunts felt so formulaic once you'd done them a few times, but it's easy for a single mistake in a Rampage to snowball into chaos for a while, and I like that.

The permabuffers are the clear replacement to prep. I liked them for the most part until you’re farming late game anomaly’s that kind of need the hp and defense.
Spiritbirds are no problem, first because you don't really need them, but if you feel you do, then you should work on making a route where you can get a lot of them, or just look it online, every map has a very obvious route to get lots of spiritbirds and other endemic life, someone probably already made a guide for each map on YouTube or something
For me it just felt like an unnecessary and tedious waste of time during the mission. And yes, you can ignore them, but the fact they even exist means they took away development time from other things that needed to be fixed before release.
Spiribirds are tedious, the critters are fun
Rise is fine, my only complaint is that to maximize survivability in hunts you need to collect a bunch of bugs at the start of every fight outside fights in an arena.
7/10 is too generous more like 5/10

I unironically wish they would just do a re-release of 4U on PC/modern vonsoles with some higher res textures. One of the series best entries, outside of a biiiit of bloat content (not really even a negative entirely) the only downside was it being stuck on the 3DS

I can dream though, a proper collection would be awesome, minor QOL improvements like the camera, and just basic upscaled textures for the older titles would be awesome, but you are right, they sort of did the "nostalgia legacy" thing with GU already so that would be the most likely if we got anything.

When you're not actively engaged in a fight to the death with a monster, the villages and even many maps are fun to just wander around and explore. More modern ones like World and Rise have all sorts of secrets to find when you're out and about, either Relic Records in hidden spots or Endemic Life you can capture and keep as pets in your home.

Same here, though it might've been because it was my first MH game. Loc Lac City was very comfy, and hunts also tended to take longer back then, so it was easier to spend a lot of time in a single session.
