BASARA:
>first game was a smash hit in japan and got a butchered, awful localization
>second game wasn't translated
>third game was faithfully translated but flopped
>third game's expansion wasn't translated
>fourth game wasn't translated
>fourth game's 2016 spin-off is a total flop even in Japan, which means the franchise is killed for good, the last "game" being a shitty gacha that was deactivated a long time ago

Meanwhile, Samurai Warriors:
>first game and it's spin-offs were faithfully translated
>second game and it's spin-offs were faithfully translated
>third game was translated, it's spin-offs weren't translated
>fourth game and it's spin-offs were faithfully translated
>fourth game's 2016 spin-off is sells very well, also got translated
>fifth game was faithfully translated

there's a few of them in development, none who has the in-game dialogue translated. The one for the fourth game is just starting to test out dialogue.

Pretty much. They both failed in their own ways, but I think a bigger unavoidable problem was they were the next generation of Musou which brings the usual baggage like character clones due to all the new assets that have to be made so shortcuts have to be taken. Compare DW6 and DW8 to see what beginning and end of a generation looks like.

they re-released SB4 with all DLCs in the disc and that sold out really well in japan and capcom is known to re-release to test market for a sequel

How the frick does a franchise as good as Basara die from ONE below average game (not even bad, just not up to Basara standard), yet series like Final Fantasy go on and on forever with underperforming garbage?

musou games simply have limited appeal

        Anonymous

They didn't used to. DW used to be a household name on the PS2, but Omega Force are too stupid to understand what people liked about them and changed it, only listening to a minority of morons about adding more literally who characters instead of improving the actual game.

Capcom fricked up by not marketing EITHER of the two games they localized. There are Basara fans today who still don't know 3 got a US release.

The fact that every anime musou sells gangbusters shows that the genre is far from niche, it's just that the only two companies who made them (now down to one) dropped the ball hard.

It's sad to me when I see the licensed games Omega pumps out. They clearly CAN make higher quality stuff, but it apparently requires the license holders to breathe down their neck.

I don't mind. I've played so many core games at this point I don't need to look at the text to know what characters are saying.

Adventure maps add a TON, but DW8XLCE probably has the most bang for your buck.

Sengoku Basara makes for much better action games. Levels are smaller and linear, but each character actually feels unique.

Yeah, there's nice details in some of the attacks too, like Kojuro having a special that needs to charge up for max damage, the full charge time matches one of Masamune's moves that's timing reliant instead.

Samurai Heroes has to be one of my favorite localization jobs. Everyone felt appropriately hammy too.

      Anonymous

SH was weird in that it was hammy during the stages, but also super fricking dramatic and serious in the story cutscenes at the same time. That ominous music playing on the map right before you start a stage fighting a magical girl on a boat is whiplash

Samurai Heroes stops being interesting the second you start to groan "oh great, i have to play this stage again..."

if you play faction based games like DW4, DW8 and SW4 there is far less "playing the same stages over and over" shit than the character-based one has.

            Anonymous

If you only play each story once, I guess

The old games weren't nearly as repetitive because stages weren't completely linear like they are now

when yoshiP was talking about how western journalists had a bias against japanese games, they were talking about how in the entire ps3 era they would knock off 2-4 points from the score for small bits of jank or because the reviewer was just bad at the game and then give the latest ubisoft glitchfest a 8-9/10 despite only playing the game for 20 minutes

games like this, the original nier, demon souls. they all got slaughtered by game journalists because they needed SOME bad reviews to point at in order to console people they aren't paid shills so they would bully jp games that didn't get a lot of push while still paying lip service to the odd highly pushed game like final fantasy 13. even shit like sonic 2006 got some good reviews in the first week because "I was told the bugs would be fixed before release" aka sega paid a lot of hush money. dark souls 2 got higher reviews then demon souls despite having all of that games difficulty/clunkiness issues that demons was slammed for but way worse.

crazy how literally no one ever played nier and then suddenly nier automata and everyone is a huge fan of nier and nier series is the greatest masterpiece in the history of mankind.... although literally no one played it or its spin offs like the drakengard series.

I have no idea how yoko taro never ever got fired while all these other LEGENDARY innovation game devs from the arcade era either resigned, got demoted from director, or left the game industry entirely. fricking incredible.
