Holy shit. I always assumed it's just subpar garbage because it looks like shit and is one of like two "real" games available on Linux. But I gave it a go recently, and it's unironically one of the most engaging strategy games I've ever played.

i had to uninstall because the rng legit felt like it would give me an aneurysm
>lose 60% chance 10 times in a row
get good
at game design
That was quick. Classic Wesnoth experience.
It's a great strategy game let down by terrible campaigns.
>Hit 5 times in a row with a 30% chance
Rrrangee is a fickle god, he gives and he takes on a whim.
>Rrrangee is a fickle god, he gives and he takes on a whim.
It wouldn't be an issue if the campaigns weren't set up to heavily punish losing units while needing you to use higher levelled units to make it through.
RNG going well makes the current mission a bit easier while RNG going badly has a negative impact on the whole rest of your campaign.
Sounds like a skill issue. See
>lose 60% chance 10 times in a row
The probability of that happening is 0.001048576%.
Sounds like God just hates you.
In all honesty the RNG system is bad but not worse than anything you'd see in a D&D game. And you can pretty much turn it off now with the "biased RNG" option, which just turns it pseudo-deterministic, i.e. 10 attacks with 30% chance to hit = exactly 3 hits.
There are mods like Advance Wesnoth Wars that replace hit probability with terrain-based damage reduction. I tried it briefly - plays weird, but a lot less painful and overall faster.
I love this game, and it filters people like this anon pretty hard. The game feels like a more advanced Fire Emblem. Has tons of campaigns, addons, and online multiplayer.
you just have to play in a way that even if you miss, you don't get completely fricked
T: never studied propabilities
Losing a slightly weighed coin flip 3x in a row is so common that whining about is absurd. Holy shit this board is ripe with branless shitters.
It was fun until I came across a cave level
Looks interesting. I remember playing it once years ago when I was too young to really engage with it
>let down by terrible campaigns
terrible how? Was it unbalanced?
Maybe he played that one chuuni super long campaign with ridiculously levelled units and other RPG shit.
Legend of the Invincibles was a hell of a ride. I actually kind of liked the twist that the protags become liches but just decide not to be evil
This game is so good that I feel guilty playing it... because it means that I wasted money on all my other games when I could have just played this instead.
Serious question. Why do people shill complete garbage?
Are they attempting to do some sort of moronic social marketing?
Are they so low IQ that a crap game appeals to their subhuman intelligence?
Are they just chasing (you)s?
Are they just taking a random break from jerking off too much?
We need answers. We need them now.
freetards will excuse any failure so long as the license is GPL
>mfw my elven outriders fight better in the trees than they do on the open field
Turn based games usually feel very meta. You know the "If I more my such and such troops to the hill on the left I can get a +5 bonus on the next turn against the enemy healer"
But when playing Wesnoth when I fill the map with hordes of troops and the battle swings back and forth between opposing sides like charges and counter charges I get invested in a really fun way.
Battle for Wesnoth is great. Make sure to check out the Wesnoth website for more cool stuff.
>it looks like shit
looks fine to me, dunno if you expect Total War-tier graphics from every indie game
uh that map couldn't be more generic
>swamp of dread
>great river
>great ocean
What part of Wesnoth is this
Are they building small mortuaries there
Its from a fantasy map where the artist very obviously just put random words together, much like the one above.
>Rio Grande
>Storesjö
>Great Lakes
"Generic names" like Great River is common in real life.
It being a collaborative project is really apparent. You get a lot of clashing art styles which is just plain ugly. And the individual art styles aren't very pretty either, just kind of serviceable.
And like
said, this lack of vision extends to the stories/setting. It all feels like the most generic fantasy shit ever, like an AI wrote it all.
>People are still finding out about Wesnoth in 2023
Kinda based
the last time i here a wesnoth thread was full of delicious salt. it was the last time i played, so like over a year ago.
glad they've improved the ai, but i still need to try it out.
Ok, give me the best campaign in the game and I will judge this game with a fair steady hand
Heir to the Throne is the best one that i have played, ignoring the plot ofc
HttT is boring as shit
Rise of Wesnoth should be the best base campaign.
Descent into Darkness
Top three when I replayed in 2016-2017 were Son of the Black Eye, Dead Water, and Secret of the Ancients.
Biggest problem with Wesnoth SP campaign is the fact that you have to metagame way too hard or you get fricked. Example: I booted it up for the first time in forever was like oh I have a save for normal mode halfway through HTTT? Damn why'd I abandon that?
It's the mission where you have to take a city from orcs with the necromancer to the north. On normal mode the AI just zerg rush spams you with troops so here I am with only 200 gold, like 3 veterans none of which are particularly good against undead, and... yeah. Tried to unfrick it today after months of leaving it on hold and I just can't make it work. There's too many orcs spawning whereas the player can only sustain like 10 people max most of whom obvs have to be new units to bodyshield your vet units, and you can't replace them at all before the undead show up.
Very very unbalanced and lazy design to make it so you just get spammed with enemy units like that, or that you can't beat a particular mission with nothing except new units using superior tactics.
If you can't beat a mission like that with even savescumming, you have a shitty or extremely hard mission and it's not supposed to be extremely hard on normal.
>It's the mission where you have to take a city from orcs with the necromancer to the north
Yes, that scenario is infamous. One of the hardest ones in the entire vanilla game, and it's like the 5th one in the first "real" campaign (i.e. not AToTB).
PROTIP: git gud.
It's actually quite simple once you realize what you're "supposed" to do. Keep your elves south of the river, and lure the orcs to cross. Play very defensively (keep your troops in the woods) until the city is almost empty. Then send out a scout/horseman up into the city so that the thieves spawn. Use your scout/horseman + thieves to attack the orc leader and decapitate their army. Mope up the orcs and quickly rush to occupy the city. From that point on it's ez.
>spoilers
ah that makes much more sense. I just rushed the southern gates with my main force and held the towers there while some chaff snuck through the eastern gate unopposed and spawned the thieves who then died keeping the warlord out of the keep while the rest of my army flooded in.
It felt like a fitting struggle for a city siege, but it was really risky and probably wouldn't have worked on higher difficulties.
Is this a good game?
It's decent+ and it's free.
It's good. I'd recommend stuff like World Conquest II once you've gotten the hang of it in standard campaigns. Whole lot of strategic depth.
>battle for weSNOTh
yucky name will not play
When was the last time the non-Steam version got updated?
It's strange to see people always complaining about RNG in this game, other than a few advanced campaigns you should be able to play almost everything blind from start to finish on the highest difficulty without ever needing to retry a scenario. I wonder if these people are missing out on some key aspect of the game, like shielding their essential units with disposable fodder, or if they just play without any consideration toward what to do if the most likely outcome does not occur. It would be fun to watch some replays from people who complain about the game.
Having played a lot of Blood Bowl i can confirm that most people are mentally incapable of considering consequences and preparing for a bad outcome.
