They're all penitents like the Penitent One, but of different orders loyal to the Miracle at least for the first four or so - they're there to stop the Penitent One from reaching the Child.

First Blasphemous was probably the most Christian game ever made (despite story part having barely anything to do with Christianity). Does this one manage to hold up without going over the top and becoming a meme? Line is pretty thin.

You literally open the game with a higher being from Literal Heaven imploring you to stop the Miracle's dark designs.

late-20's dating isn't about being tall and fit, it's about having your shit together, which doesn't even mean "have a high-paying job (though this obviously helps a frickton) but simply that you have a stable income/living situation and are looking for a family.

Wait a second is this true? I don't usually respond to anyone who texts me right away, even when it's a girl I like.
Plus I've heard dating coaches tell people never to respond right away unless you're having an active conversation so you don't seem to needy or desperate.

              Anonymous

Dating coaches are dumb as frick don't listen to their advice. Literally think about it why would you ignore the person who you like? It makes no sense. Always reply to the person you like asap. It makes no sense to try and be cool by delaying your response. Would you want the person you like to ignore you just because?

        >In what way?
Most people on 4chins, and especially self-proclaimed Christians, have no idea what Chirstianity even is. Their perception of it is pretty basic and generally boils down to one of very few patterns:
        >Badass crusader beats up brown people, deus vult
        >Jesus forbids you to jack off, stop posting anime bawds
        >Look at this cool cathedral, I'm such a culture appreciator

None of these touch main theme. Christianity in its foundations is an extremely macabre religion. Its myth mostly consists of incidents of unreasonably brutal torture. Its main category of holy relics are bodies or body parts of saints or virtuous people. It is generally fascinated with death, corpses and burial. I'm talking about traditional Christianity obviously, protestantism is the new shit which stripped down most of things which were practiced for many centuries.

Blasphemous expresses this fundamental aspect of Christianity perfectly in its aesthetics. They even integrate it into the gameplay, with player collecting bones to put them into ossuary, or getting metroidovania powerups from sacred body part relics. There is also a frick ton of references to smaller things, for example main character's helmet and maybe other obscure stuff I don't get. People who were making this are very deep into this culture and very good with committing it to the game.

I’m Italian and the games lore is not hard to understand at all, it’s very clearly based on Roman mysticism embraced by the Spanish and southern Italians. The setting looks like my city but with more gothic touches, which is typical of Seville I guess, we’re more strictly Romanesque (porticoes are the true god)

You’re correct with regards to art direction, philosophically I am unsure.

The ending with the Greater Wills and The Miracle seemingly being intertwined and neither truly having agency over the other paints the setting as more Gnostic than Christian. I am basing this solely off the concept of two equally powerful entities locked in stalemate vs 1 all powerful creator entity. Doctrinally it wears a Christian skinsuit.

Unless I misunderstood or misremember, it's more "anti-god" than anything, right? Because unless I'm mistaken, it was essentially about The High Wills (This universe's version of God) unleashing the Miracle (The Rapture/apocalypse) unto the world, and through the true ending story path you find out that it released the rapture not out of divine justice as religion had said it would be, but rather out of pure ego and vanity, so rather simply, because it thought that it was it's right to unleash and that it would be just to do so only because it says. But in fact, it was not just in any way and it was purely self-serving, so this would mean that god in itself is blasphemous. Which is where Penitente steps in, to set things right.

        Anonymous

        High wills were tulpas

At the beginning of B2, it's said Miraglo created the child, not that the child is a miracle itself.

        Anonymous

Nah, I think you misunderstood: in Blasphemous the proxy for the Holy Trinity is divided, there's an Absent God that went to a higher plane via The Eternal Processions, The Holy Ghost in this version is The Miracle which is merely a tool for the higher beings to enacted their will on the plane of Cvstodia and then there's the figure of Christ that is The Twisted. The when the Absent God ascended it left Cvstodia at peace and The Miracle behind, the people of Cuvstodia in this almost utopia still felt inadequate and some were ridden with guilt and confusion product of the hole left by the Absent God.

One individual grievance and guilt were so potent and sincere that it caught the attention of one of the beings roaming The Eternal Processions and used The Miracle to grant him his wish. The other citizens of Cvstodia took noticed and venerated this occurrence that signified the return of The Divine and created a new cult around it. It's implied that the faith generated by the usage of The Miracle grants it's used more power and heights of existence and the being that used The Miracle, now known as The High Wills, became drunk on it.

The people of Cvstodia intepreted that the most painful and severe the punishment they asked for even the slightest transgressions to the faith, the more glory for their forgiveness they'd take, this made others more faithful and willing to make sacrifices and take punishment. This cycle nourished the powers that The High Wills would harvest. This made The High Wills more covetous of the power of the faith, it tryed to hide the truth of the ascension of The Twisted by taking the witnesses of the event to another planes of existence were they wouldn't be found. The High Wills even got jealous of figures of the church that got more praise than them and punished/deformed them severely. The High Wills and The Sorrow/Painful Miracle were taken as synonyms at this point.

        Anonymous

This game recontextualizes the High Wills and makes it seem that much like the Child it's about to birth, they were ultimately the result of the Miracle's machinations. What is consistent is that for all its power, the Miracle must create a new God to act as a guiding nexus of its power, in order to effectively maintain its manifestations in reality. The loss of the High Wills drove it out of Custodia and the birth of the Child would ensure its return to power.

More than that though, Anunciada (the lady in the OP) outright establishes that she comes from "the holy mountains on high, the seat and beginning of all that is holy" and acts as an emissary of benign entities staunchly opposed to the Miracle. The Miracle isn't God, it's the setting's version of the Devil.

          Anonymous

          >The Miracle isn't God, it's the setting's version of the Devil.
I don't think the Miracle is the "devil", more like the Miracle always needs a "god" to work with, and while this time is "godless", it tries to recreate its own "god" to serve.
Or basically pic related. The Miracle needs a god to work properly, so it is trying to create its own god, but it is imperfect without a god, thus it would create only an imperfect god, thing that would be worse for everyone else so you need to stop it.

            Anonymous

The Miracle created The High Wills because the people of Custodia wanted to be punished for their guilt.

Then The High Wills started power tripping and being heavy handed so The Miracle hijacked The Penitent One from The High Wills plan to have him replace Escobar and renew Custodia faith; it had him kill The High Wills freeing the people of Custodia and itself from them.

The Miracle is like a plane that needs some type of pilot to function but like with all things, there are good pilots and shitty pilots.

There's some later stuff in the game that does in fact pretty firmly define the Miracle as being evil. Or at least, completely fricking capricious in how it acts and what it does.

The good ending involves your character become Jesus by taking everyone's manifested sins and sacrificing himself to become a tree, thus getting rid of the Miracle. It's more Gnostic than anything, It's very Christian, the people who made it are genuinely ingrained in the culture and are passionate about it, unlike Fromsoft putting cathedrals in their games because they think Christianity is cool and exotic.
Most people will be offended at genuine expressions of Christianity because they don't actually understand their religion or its history.

And the best ending has you destroy the literal demonic wills directing the greater actions of the Miracle in order to force it to frick off, with you being righteously entombed for your sacrifice in saving everyone.

Yeah, Blasphemous 2 is post-Wounds of Eventide after the Penitent One dies due to putting down the High Wills. It's why everything is so hilariously different, because a LOT of time has passed since the last game (multiple characters say anything from "millenia" to fricking "eons").

I legit didn't know of the earlier build. They are using this so called earlier version on their steam page as advertisement which is kinda stupid, don't blame me if I fell for it.

          Anonymous

the cutscenes being animated differently is such a non issue, sure it sucks but the main hook was always the IN GAME pixel art not just the cutscenes which arent very long in the first place

            Anonymous

Nah it's still an issue, they're just so glaringly out of place. Cohesive visual design is important, and that includes for cutscenes.

            Anonymous

Not that anon, but no, this new anime cutscene style is terrible and absolutely clashes with the grim gothic horror fantasy aesthetic of the game. I don't know how anyone can say it's a non-issue, it's so blatant and jarring. That's not going to stop me from playing it though, only because I adore the first game. But that shit really stings to see.

They are literally the first thing that appear in the game, don't mess well with the general art direction and they convey information. Maybe you don't, but some people care about cohesion.

Yeah, the og cutscenes were great. Calling back to titles like "Flashback" and "Out of this World". In game stuff seems better in general though. Lots of fine details and often beautiful backgrounds. A few of the tile sets (mostly Jondo) kinda felt like something from a cellphone game.

It's funny that despite being corrected they still opted to use the outdated one for their image. The design still lacks a punch to it though, maybe they should've done a different kind of monster rather than another giant skeleton? Melquíades is hard to beat.

I gave a better look at those sprites, the developers are fricking moronic for usind scaled up sprites and added unnecessary watermarks, ruining the sprite.
                Here's some advice:
-On Paint or similar Reduce the sprites back to native scale.
-On XnViewMP Reduce color count to 32 no dithering.
Here's my results, the most cleaned-up, 32-bit sprites they've ever seen.

      Read this:

It's irony; the offered her sight but The Miracle still makes her "see" but only through the power of The Miracle; keeping her blind to the truth of what The Miracle really is. She thinks the power granted by her is through sacrifice but in reality is granted by her utility to the faith of the High Wills and her blind cooperation.

That's because most of the bosses in this game are (or were) human, but there are still huge bosses in the game. The overall reason most of the bosses are human is that without the High Wills, the Miracle is vastly diminished and needs to rely on its penitent forces to slow the Penitent One down until the Child can be birthed.

Seems like the gameplay has improved significantly but the “vision” so to speak got cut back in some areas. The devs were a bit over their heads during Blasphemous 1’s production if I recall correctly, which is why its bosses were mostly larger than life and the game more consistently macabre/grotesque.

That guy has 1) played through literally the entire game well before release, 2) 100% edited out any deaths he DID have over the multi-hour experience, and 3) still gets hit a frick ton even WITH the i-frames you're sucking off - several bosses reduce him to low health in seconds.

All of the first game's bosses were either slower or had less viable ways to frick you over barring Crisanta or other later bosses. The real reason they could kill you easily is because you had fewer i-frames or some of their attacks ignored them.

The music is evocative and unintrusive

    >The bad
The cartoon cinematics are horrible. It doesn't fit the style. The pixel art cutscenes in the first ones were much more impactful. Case in point: when the lady in OP appears she's generic Anime woman n 128937, but in-game is just much more beautiful
The voice acting is weird. Some of the actors (like the one in OP) are emphasising the wrong words or have horrible Spanish pronunciation ("my name is A-nun-ci-ah-ta").
The combat can be tedious. Why, instead of backdashing, do I have to go THROUGH an enemy to dodge him? Why does that only work with some enemies?

The only interesting part about the game is how the starting weapon choices changes what path you take because they have diffetent movement tech. It's something really unique that I haven't seen done in an MV game before.

    I'm gonna say it.

The first game was more soulful. Everybody has already mentioned the cutscenes but a lot of other things feel meh. The ropes guy whatshisname was a cooler messenger than the angel, and the pentitent one waking up among a horde of his slaughtered bros was grim but now you just wake up in a coffin like it's Dark Souls 3. Also beating the first boss and pouring his blood in your helmet was iconic, nothing this edgy has happened to me so far. The world doesn't really feel "religious" in this one, it's just a random slew of disconnected imagery and half the npcs are wacky spirits instead of suffering people. Maybe it'll get better.

You kinda put into words what I was thinking. The game is pretty good, but as far as the actual artistry involved, I feel like the world and the characters are much hollower. It feels less grounded, like they tried to one-up the last game, whereas the last game was so effortlessly inspired. I still the like the game, but 1 just feels more natural.

Blasphemous 1 was a solid 8.5/10 for me and I expected marginal improvements here, but pretty much every aspect of the original is improved and every issue I've had with the first game has been addressed in some way. • 10 months ago
      Anonymous

I feel like they messed something up with the Counter move. It seems like they're designed for you to spam them and be able to interrupt slashes to parry attacks, but it seems like when you do that, it's impossible to do a counter attack, where if you just stand there and parry in the same window of the enemy attack, you counter properly.

        Anonymous

        >but it seems like when you do that, it's impossible to do a counter attack
There is a counter, but I think you need to unlock it.

          Anonymous

I know, like I mentioned I can pull it off consistently when not spamming attack but when spamming, it seems like it happens only sometimes. The game says the parry can interrupt attacks but I don't know if it actually cancels animations or what.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding how the blades are "supposed" to be used. It seems like if counter can't be used consistently when attacking, they don't really have a strong enough reward for the risk of hanging out in enemies' faces that it demands. The Censer hits hard, wide and has very little risk because of the range. Since the blades are more limited in range and damage, I figured "control" was its role. There are also a lot of attacks that you can't parry, which is wild.

            Anonymous

You can parry most attacks. Once you unlock parry and counter, if you block at the last possible moment then you do a decent counter.

It's not good against 2 or more enemies but it's bretty gud in a 1 on 1.

dying stacks a debuff/buff that increases damage taken (roughly 50% at max) and locks up parts of your mana/fervor bar, you're unable to use any mana at max
in turn you get 50% more tears(souls) and more martyrdom mark gain rate, i assume also 50%

While I don't know how to get through those floors myself, I think it's tied to the Sword? The bells are used with the Censer, which you can find in the Sacred Entombments; go to the lefthand end of the City of the Holy Name, then go up to the aqueducts, then keep going left to unlock it. When run, the bells will temporarily make those silver bubbles you've been seeing into platforms, and turn those silvery-gray doors with the faces on them into thin layers of mist that you can permanently break by passing through. The transformation only lasts a few seconds, so you have to be quick!

It's at the far end of the Crown of Towers, an area that is towards the northeast corner of the map; you have to go right from the City of the Blessed Name, through the Grilles & Ruin area until you go can up and right to enter the Choir of Thorns. Just keep going up and right and you'll enter the Crown of Towers. It's past the second save point there, which is on the rightward path above the door to the elevators that drop you back down to Choir of Thorns and then to Streets of Wake.

Hey, next time you recommend Blasphemous to someone be sure to ask if they know anything general about metroidvanias, because if they end up liking Blasphemous (as their entry into the genre) they're going to look for more games like it. Then, when they find out that it's kind of an outlier in terms of abilities and combat, they're going to be pissed because it's confusing to read Hollow Knight getting insane praise while gating simple shit like dodging and parrying and paywalling maps and stickers.

I agree, it actually feels a little like you can do combos since you can switch in and out of flame-on mode mid-combo which is cool. I also already have two statues that synergize together for it, for increased damage with it specifically and Flame damage.

You can crouch and attack, as well as angle the rapier downwards, I think? As well there's the dash-slash. But yeah, the rapier has the worst AOE with its strikes, so you really want to switch to the flail or sword for those little bastards.

  102. 10 months ago
    Anonymous

I've only played for a few hours but I'm enjoying it so far.
I feel like the flail is way stronger than the sword and swords, even if it is slower.
I like the new weapon upgrade trees and the new currency you get from bosses and killing enough mobs.
I like that having guilt has bigger downsides but also gives more rewards.
    The graphics are still great
I'm not sure why they upped the amount of tears you get when there is nothing to spend them on outside of a few items from the merchant.
I only encountered one bug so far. I fought the thread lady boss and died, but when I retrieved my corpse my guilt didn't go away and had to pay the confessor after I beat her.

      >I feel like the flail is way stronger than the sword and swords, even if it is slower.
Flail is 100000% offense with no defensive capabilities. In some situations it's kinda dangerous to use because at the very least early it has no hyperarmor moves (2 swords have it on a thrusting barrage for example) so you can get hit out of attacking.

Flail is by far the most fun thus far but they all get their unique gimmicks
Just go to the marked bosses, you will get another ones in the process, but don't go to the topmost left one if you take the flail, it's the one who gives it to you.

Actually I agree. The setpiece bosses in the first game were boring as sin to fight but it's not like the rest of the game was hard. They were fun to look at and see.
The best bosses from the first game were human sized duels but that was only in NG+ and the fight at the bridge, here most of the bosses are just as easy ad the setpiece ones but without the gravitas that made me look forward to seeing in the first game.

If it's anything like the first game - the NPC is there to heal you. But the heal only triggers when you're on critical health. And at that point you're more likely to heal yourself.

  112. 10 months ago
    Anonymous

So, sword or rapiers? Trying to avoid the big ass hammer since it's easymode

      Anonymous

Sword is Normal Mode; it has average speed, decent striking area without being as wide as the flail, and it comes with parry + counter-attack by default. Has a toggle-able "blood rage" mode that adds Mystic type damage and, once you get the right upgrades, lets you heal with each attack so long as the rage meter is filled.

Rapiers is Hard Mode. Fastest strike speed, but least damage, and has such a small strike-effect area that you'll need to actively work to hit anything that is below waist-height (like the midget duelists in the Palace of Embroiders), It can parry, but you need to spend a Mark to gain a counter-attack, and it only triggers on a perfect parry - you're supposed to rely more on dodging and its unique dodge+slash attack. Fill up its "tempo" meter with attacks and you'll gain a permanent boost of Electric damage, but get hit once and you lose the buff, so you need to MASTER dodging and parrying to get the most out of this weapon.

10 hours in, my worthless thoughts so far:

    >cutscene art style is a downgrade, they should have thrown money at the original pixel artist to get them to stay
    >music is good although less varied
    >fewer destructible objects to hit in levels makes environments feel a bit lifeless sometimes
    >bosses are fun and well-designed, my faves so far are big and little, and that Sekiro-looking geezer before the double jump
    >world map and level design is decent
    >the weapon switching is fun to mess around with and adds a measure of variety to the experience
    >the mirror zapping thing is really fun and I hope they go crazy with it in the lategame levels

Overall I think it's an atmospheric downgrade so far but gameplay and world is still fun so I rate it good out of 10. Feels good to be back pointy helmet bros.

You killed something that was parading around the Holy Ghost's power for its own selfish purposes and now the Holy Ghost is without a master and is trying to create its own god, but that won't be good since the Holy Ghost is not itself a perfect being and therefore can't make a god.

It answers prayers and a couple prayed to the Miracle for a child so it answered said prayer.

          >It answers prayers and a couple prayed to the Miracle for a child so it answered said prayer.
It only answered said prayer as a ploy to regain its power. Said child (heavily implied to be Radames) was not only born with an unnatural deformity, but was implied to have killed its mother during the birth. The Miracle then used it to spread disease and death to all of the people, thereby forcing them into another cycle of guilt, suffering, prayer, and penance that it could feed upon to strengthen it to birth The Child.

          >The old Penitent is the first one? Where was him and his squad in the first game?
Eviterno is OLD. And more than that, he wasn't around in the first because he's the Miracle's greatest actor and too valuable to waste outside of the direct circumstances. It certainly didn't seem to view him as necessary to bring out for the defense of the High Wills, at any rate.

          >You revisit the Mother of Mother's so is it the game geographical location as the first?
Same location as the first game, just countless years later.

You fail to understand the difference between allegory and values, the lack of beauty and craftsmanship compared to the first game also makes it evident that divine inspiration is completely gone and it's only used as a skin suit.

You could acquire all weapons in a few hours, anyway. And it's not like you could cripple yourself and only take one weapon, because you need the weapons to unlock more of the map, so picking all of them are obligatory.

Yeah, I know, but your still stuck with it a good while. The Cencer did so much damage and had such a good reach on the training ghost, but still went with Rapier since it had riposte and the dash
The rapier in 1 looks better, and I kinda wish it had fast poking attacks instead of slashes, but oh well

the reason I didn't pick the rapiers after trying them on the ghost is too little damage honestly, felt like my thumb would get fatigued after a while of constant pressing. I really hope there's a way to increase its damage

I would think so, they feel pretty weak so far, and the dash is a bit finnicky as you still take contact-damage
Parried the first boss, the wheel man and the flagelant, they all bounced me back and no counter-attack. A bit disappointing

You could end with all of the weapons in like 2-3 hours if you are fast enough.

I really hope they buff the Rapiers a bit. They need a slight damage buff but more importantly, they need a wider window for Parry/Counter to give them some definitive advantage over the other two. The Counter should also turn the Penitent One around if you dash through an enemy, as it makes it hard to follow up a successful counter as-is.

Also, who the frick thought it was a good idea to make the Ruego's buff cost HEALTH as well as have a bar that needs to constantly be charged up to use. Do any of the later upgrades for it make the health cost lower or go away? As-is, it's suicide to use it in boss fights and I don't have enough recovery options to justify using it when running around.

Getting lightning helped a bit with the damage. Dear god I was glad I got the cencer when facing the fire-breathing skulls. But I still prefer using the rapier against certain mobs, like the bell-giants

Yeah, I found that but that also applies to Ruego, so it still leaves the Rapiers without a real advantage. I'm also not clear on if that extends the window for a Counter or just the Parry window.

Getting lightning helped a bit with the damage. Dear god I was glad I got the cencer when facing the fire-breathing skulls. But I still prefer using the rapier against certain mobs, like the bell-giants

Yeah, they're not completely useless but they have no niche. I just want to feel like it's rewarding to use all three weapons, and I feel like I keep trying to find reasons to use the Rapiers compared to the other two.

you DID unlock the multi-weapon ability right?

I haven't gotten the sword yet, just at the glass skeleton boss. I've been fine with rapier so far, and the lightning melts him. But there is a chance I will like the sword just all-around more instead of the rapier

censer looks the best so I went with that but I fear the game will be too easy, thinking of restarting with rapiers

You get wall cling like six seconds into the game. As for resolution, it is kinda weird. I don't know what Scale Mode means since there's no description and it's just a Yes/No. Changing it doesn't seem to do anything.

I can say that playing in Fullscreen does do Native resolution since the screenshots I'm taking are in 4K.

Just finished it with 90% completion and 99% map.
Whatever I'm missing must be hidden inside secret rooms, and honestly I don't feel like exploring the whole game again just to hit every wall in the game hoping there's something behind it.

Has anyone found out if there are secret bosses or endings? Besides a few spells, beads and statues, I'm missing two nuns and at least one kiss.

Also, rapier basic attack animation is boring while the censer is too strong. Ended up using the vanilla weapon instead.

People were saying the art style was tonned down and that this game looked souless. Is it really a "sell out" sort of deal or does it live up to the original?

      Anonymous

I'm 8 hours in, it's just as good as the first. The only issues so far are the cutscenes being traditional animation rather than pixel art and that unique executions are the exception rather than the rule now, but executions in general aren't focused on nearly as much in this game, nor are parries, so I don't really mind it.

I guess you could say it's toned down in that the enemies you face are less likely to be horrifically deformed, but you're not really facing monsters twisted my the Miracle anymore so it kinda makes sense. There's still lots of gory religious imagery.

1, so far, does have a lot more soul, mostly to clunky pixel art. But the backgrounds are still really nice. But it is still good, just not as good but prettier

I've played for 8 hours and run into one so far, which is the intro. You'll be fine. Most of the stuff that's been affected is just hand drawn artwork where the pixel art stills would have been before.
