Anon, most of us never played Majong in our lives. So when we play a game that is poorly explained, and set up for moderate difficulty, we fail miserably.
Oh sure, let me just throw a bamboo stick at the table which adds 1000 points to my triple-dora-paimon and lets me achieve second heavenly emperor cultivation rank, but only if I also have an eastern wind tile.

Right. So I assume you know what a "pair" is. 2 of the same tile. Take that pair, set it aside for now. >"4 triplets"
Almost every single winning hand in the game consists of that earlier pair, and 4 "sets".
A "set" is either: >a three of a kind/triplet, aka "9, 9, 9" of the same suit, three of the same dragon/wind tile. etc
OR >a sequence, or three numbers of the same suit in sequence, aka "4, 5, 6" of the same suit, "6, 7, 8" of the same suit, etc.
The most basic of hands is any 4 sets, and that pair.
canadian here, but also moronic so i can't speak for anyone else, but as soon as mahjong starts trying to explain it's basics past go fish memory game then it loses me
I'm filtered by shogi but there's at least with a trainer you can do every cheevo for it in each game.
Otherwise, I love mahjong even if I'm so-so at it. Usually float around Expert 3 in MJS and 2nd Dan on Tenhou.
Mahjong feels like an extremely autistic savant kid and a super chuuni deviantart kid decided poker was too simple for them and teamed up to create their own version.
The in-game rules explanation is awful and only good for referencing rather than learning. Once I watched a YouTube video it got enjoyable enough for me to play outside of Yakuza. I wish more tutorials focused on how to actually play the game rather than richii brute forcing.
Oh sure, let me just throw a bamboo stick at the table which adds 1000 points to my triple-dora-paimon and lets me achieve second heavenly emperor cultivation rank, but only if I also have an eastern wind tile.
Why can't it just be poker?
Poker is already in Yakuza and it's boring as frick, in my experience AI either folds instantly with shit hands or keeps betting with good ones. Because they fold so quickly even if you have a good hand you're most likely not earning much on it. It's the easiest gambling minigame to earn cash with, but it's the most boring one as it favors defensive play way more than bluffing and you're only earning on great hands that shit on AI's good ones
>you had konged ... it was obvious after the charleston that you were going for a civil war because you passed the joker and the 4 of cracks. that's why they beat you by calling mah jongg on the lucky "13"
I think pronouncing "pinfu" and "iipeikou" in the Japanese accent is pretty fun to do but I don't care about anything else related to the game and I just straight up skip the minigames. Don't care if I'm missing on content like side missions or whatever. I'm just not playing this shit.
If I understand what you're asking right. The 4 or 5, depending on which one you draw again first because if the rest of the hand is complete you're in tenpai.
>what if i cant drop anything else cuz its already full sequences/triplets and pairs
it means you're in tenpai and can win with a 3 or 6
if you get a 5 you can drop the 4 and turn it into a double wait on 5/8 (depending on discards)
if you get an 8 you can either drop the 5 for a double wait on 3/6 or drop the 4 for a double wait on 5 or the other pair in your hand
I played mahjong for these completion lists but recently I played Mahjong Soul and it’s really fun. It has a tutorial that is extremely basic but if you can practice against newbies. Don’t memorize the complicated hands either, start with basics. Hide your hand in general so you get yaku, the winning condition, unless you think you can get a big hand. I usually open my hand if I have prevalent wind (the wind counts as yaku if the turn or seat matches it) or the dragon tiles. If you don’t have many 1 or 9s try all simples. Check the dora, it’s a bonus to your score but remember that the fora is the next one in line, if the tile is 5 of characters then the bonus is really 6. Pinfu is common so learn that. If you have a lot of pairs starting off like over 4 or 5 pairs then go for 7 pairs which is an exception to the usual 4 triplets and a pair winning condition. Play with red tiles and use them to get bonus points. Also you need to win the matches, so you need to know how to play defensively. Basically if an opponent calls riichi and your hand is not good then play tiles that were discarded. If someone rons off of you you pay the entire winning to them but if you don’t then the payment is basically equal between all the players. To play defense just discard the tiles that were already discarded, that’s the basic but google suji for indepth defense tricks. Also there’s a dealer bonus for winning and extra penalty for losing, the dealer switches brtween rounds. Streaming is popular now so you can find a english speaking mahjong player and some will have commentary on how to play.
how do I go for riichi effectively
I literally can't stop making calls and get shitty hands out then lose in 3rd-2nd place the moment someone rons/tsumos for some big dick hand worth 12000 points or more
Realize due to chance you can only win 1/4 of the hands. Of course if you are willing to go for shit hands you can win more, but even then, randomness makes it so you cant win them all. Second, learn to cut effectively. Loose honors, terminals and singles first, then switch out slightly worse tiles for slightly better tiles, until you get to a riichi hand. Calling a pon on honor tiles (dragons and dealer/player seat) is fine, but dont do it on other shit. If you are like 20 tiles in, and you still cant do shit, just try to avoid dealing in. 12k hands arent that bad as long as youre not the one paying it out.
Calling when you're +1 shanten is a waste because you have more chances to improve your hand. If you can chii one meld while rest of your hand is shit it literally doesn't matter and you could've advanced your hand just by drawing

This. Every time I have gotten 13 orphans it's been on a single tile hell wait. Only a coward would have silly thoughts like "what if the last tile is in the dead wall"? Take a leap of faith.
I am a scrub, what's the difference between a Thirteen Oprhans and a thirteen-wait thirteen orphans?

For a 13 sided one, you already have each of the unique 13 tiles in your hand so if any of them are discarded you win
For the single sided one, you have a pair in your hand and you win off the missing tile

Makes me laugh that this can legit be your discard pile.
>some beginner tips
If you call to take someone else's tile, remember this image.
(if you have an "open" hand, as in people can see some one or more of your sequences because you called, you are probably going to need to remove all 1s and 9s from your hand)
There are exceptions, but you asked for beginner tips.
Outside of certain specific hands, Wind tiles (East, West, North, South) are completely valueless for you if they are not the Prevalent Wind (which is visible in the middle of the board), or your Seat Wind (the wind you are assigned, visible above your discards).
GET RID OF THEM EARLY.
If you get 2 of the same dragon tile early, feel free to call if someone else discards. If you only have 1 of a dragon tile, don't wait and pray you draw more, discard that shit the second you draw a more useful tile. You don't wanna be that guy holding a Red Dragon or East Wind tile and some c**t has called Riichi and you now need to discard that dragon/wind right into his hands.
>If you only have 1 of a dragon tile, don't wait and pray you draw more, discard that shit the second you draw a more useful tile.
Ok I will do this. I've been holding out for dragons pretty much every time kekkkk.
>some beginner tips

no matter how big your hand is, a tanyao will end it all
Last game I got btfo from 1st place to 4th place because I was going for a tanyao and got ronned when I tossed out a 9 man. Did the guy knew what I was going for and built his hand to counter me specifically, or was it mostly bad luck?
>I've been holding out for dragons pretty much every time
I was also guilty of this when I started playing, because I learned that if you get a triplet of dragons or viable winds, you don't need to worry about getting rid of terminals (1s and 9s) because the wind/dragon triplet already count as a 'win condition' ('Yaku').
But trying to hold out for that just means you're ignoring the rest of your hand, and you're not gonna get anywhere with a bunch of 1000 point hands.
>Did the guy knew what I was going for and built his hand to counter me specifically, or was it mostly bad luck
It can honestly be either. There are pros who will straight up read your discards and know what you have, but at lower ranks it's more likely you just unluckily discarded the tile he needed.
IF SOMEONE HAS CALLED RIICHI AND YOU DO NOT HAVE MOST OF A GOOD HAND GOING: GIVE UP. Half this game is about NOT LOSING THE HAND, not necessarily WINNING it.
Observe the Riichi'd player's discards. Anything he has discarded, is safe for YOU to discard. But if someone else also has an open hand, it won't be 100% safe. Observe the other players' discards to see what they're tossing out. >why are their discards safe for me to discard?
A player cannot call Ron (to take your tile and win the hand) on a tile they have already discarded.
not my problem, learn to be resourceful, you have the entirety of the world's history and knowledge at your fingers and you ask someone else to do a google search for you. You deserve to be bad

Basically, it's very efficient English guide how-to play mahjong, it will save you both from mistakes if you get naturally bad habits and saves your time in general to figure out basic truths.
[...]
MJS is web client that shits itself on Firefox, and as oldest and popular gacha it's very stingy with pulls. A lot of Chinese players.
RC has mahjong client so it just works, and they give more pulls so it's better for newbies. There is way less Chinese players for some reason, mostly nips, you can see more often players emoting back which is soul.
The point is just playing both, and not missing out on pulls.

Riichi City literally copied everything in Mahjong Soul but fixes a couple minor annoying details (nip names for yaku, doesn't cover the pool after a win). If the MJS devs fixed these, RC would be effectively dead.
Mahjong Soul is pretty brutal though for F2Ping cosmetics, and the emotes are more expressive so RCgays are rightfully ridiculed.

if MJS devs did even a bit of effort, RC would be dead as basically why bother if MJS was perfect.
Two years have passed, MJS devs only recently started to move(copying new player 7-day quest from RC, updating tutorial)
And this part actually highlights the other good side of RC, devs actually care about the game and player requests and improve it month by month steadily.

You can also email devs and get non-copypasted response like within 24 hours, at least it was for me when i shared some suggestions.
I have mad respect to any game developer that eats own slop and cares about it. It's sad, but it's very rare quality these days.
i learned how to play Hearts once for about a month and that's pretty much a lifetime's worth of learning to play obtuse games for me, thanks >friend brings over a card game based on trick-taking shit like hearts >it's further complicated by not letting you see your own hand
i don't see the appeal
Deal in rate too high, learn how to fold against riichi
Fuuro rate is on low side, but win rate is bad so you don't really utilize closed hand efficiently
RB1
>18.53% deal in rate
You get that lower to start with. You're making risky discards trying to finish your hand despite your opponents being in stronger positions.
Remember, the goal isn't just to win, but also to not lose.
https://euophrys.itch.io/mahjong-efficiency-trainer - you can also use this, but after reading RB1 as it's a bit shitty software that counts acceptance and folding danger a bit wrongly.
Trainer tab is for efficiency(tile acceptance)
Folding tab is for folding.
Obviously in real game you will get harder decisions sometimes, like push vs fold, but basically you should aim for 8000+ value in your hand if you want to push non-safe tiles.
Imagine you are 2 tiles away from complete hand, and someone calls riichi. Obviously, you need to push a lot of dangerous or not tiles to get into tenpai.
Sometimes, it's just easier to give up that round and start to discard tiles that your opponent can't win off.
That means that while that opponent is likely to get points(through ron or tsumo), you don't get to lose points directly.
Obviously there are cases when you want to push it to bitter end, but it all depends on your hand, tiles, points and round.
Which is why reading RB1 is useful, it will give you basic understanding on concepts, the rest is practice.
>18.53% deal in rate
You get that lower to start with. You're making risky discards trying to finish your hand despite your opponents being in stronger positions.
Remember, the goal isn't just to win, but also to not lose.
If someone discards a 5 then 2 and 8 of the same suit are probably safe. Same for 4 with 1/7, and 6 with 3/9.
The reverse is also true. If someone discards both a 2 and 8 of the same suit then the 5 is probably safe too.
Imagine the only your unfinished shape is 56
But 7 is in your discards, so you are furiten!
If someone will drop 4, or 7 you can't ron off those, you can only tsumo
This is the idea of suji, but you apply that for the opponents.
It assumes that opponent is waiting on ryanmen wait(23, 34, 45, 56, 67, 78 shapes), which will be most of the time.
The trick part is the fact that if 7 is safe tile, it doesn't makes 4 also safe(as it can be 23 waiting shape), but if 4 is dropped, then 1 and 7 are safe from ryanmen wait.
tfw im so autistic with achievements/trophies (i collect them all in a game, always) i will not play the yakuza series because of this, and I fricking ADORE everything i've seen about yakuza
one of my worst feels in gaming, genuinely. im not learning fricking majong, i even lightly attempted it and it was the most confusing shit of all time, only for other people to be like
you probably took the best course of action for the wrong reason. mahjong is the most approachable of the random learnable shit they chuck in. it's shogi that's the fricker if you're a completionist.
Cool thing is once you get one yakuza plat, you pretty much have 90% of the skills you'll need to get the rest. Then the stockholm syndrome kicks in, and you look for comfort in climax battles, gambling minigames and all the other bullshit in every title
>just played a hanchan >was in dead last in south 4 with 15k points but no one else is above 30k >ron dealer with a riichi chiitoi >west round, i'm dealer >double ron the same guy with another player >still not in 1st >bonus round >riichi on a 3/6/9 sou wait >the hand is worth frick all but i can keep my streak going >player across immediately plays a 9 sou >riichi, ippatsu, 2 ura dora (on the 9 sou) >get 1st
I hate mahjong so much it's unreal but when you win like that, you can't help but feel good about it.
if i want to bond a girl in mahjong soul and dont care about any of the other characters should i use faith to get the stones needed, or should i get dust off gifts to get tickets, or should i use those for gift bags instead to get the purple gifts needed, or what?
i just want to get more emotes why is this shit so stingy and complicated
It takes like a solid 5 hours to learn mahjong from nothing, way less if you have a guide or a teacher, both of which is offered in Yakuza.
If you can't understand Mahjong in like an hour then you're probably a moron. But that's totally fine, it isn't like you have to learn it in an hour, you have as much time as you need, literally.
Mahjong isn't really a complicated game, it just has essentially no foundation for most westerners. You have both learn a bunch of pieces and how they relate to one another as well as the game itself, but it isn't really complicated, not anymore so than poker or dominos.
Why does this filter burgers so hard? Can they not count to three or something?
Anon, most of us never played Majong in our lives. So when we play a game that is poorly explained, and set up for moderate difficulty, we fail miserably.

Shogi is like if chess pieces literally said "King" or "Rook" on them. Literally labeled.
There's an option to play like this on every app I remember checking. I have never seen someone use it though.
For shogi you can just look at a youtube video and do everything the guy does, the AI will always do the same moves so winning 1 game wins you all.

This. Every time I have gotten 13 orphans it's been on a single tile hell wait. Only a coward would have silly thoughts like "what if the last tile is in the dead wall"? Take a leap of faith.
I've only ever gotten the 13-wait double yakuman version - never the regular one.
Yes, yes, very cute
However
I am a scrub, what's the difference between a Thirteen Oprhans and a thirteen-wait thirteen orphans?
For a 13 sided one, you already have each of the unique 13 tiles in your hand so if any of them are discarded you win
For the single sided one, you have a pair in your hand and you win off the missing tile
Aha, of course. Thanks.
>all those kans
>training wheels
Cute bronzie.
Makes me laugh that this can legit be your discard pile.
yes? most people will see that and think south is a safe discard
Can I get some beginner tips? Just started playing 2 days ago
>some beginner tips
If you call to take someone else's tile, remember this image.
(if you have an "open" hand, as in people can see some one or more of your sequences because you called, you are probably going to need to remove all 1s and 9s from your hand)
There are exceptions, but you asked for beginner tips.
no matter how big your hand is, a tanyao will end it all
Outside of certain specific hands, Wind tiles (East, West, North, South) are completely valueless for you if they are not the Prevalent Wind (which is visible in the middle of the board), or your Seat Wind (the wind you are assigned, visible above your discards).

Basically, it's very efficient English guide how-to play mahjong, it will save you both from mistakes if you get naturally bad habits and saves your time in general to figure out basic truths.
The point is just playing both, and not missing out on pulls.
>you need to read a 278 page book to play mahjong
Okay yeah no.
what's the difference between MajSoul and RiiCity?
mahjonh soul is the most popular, so you need to play riichi city to be different
RiiCity is mahjong.
MajSoul is mahjong but with cute anime girls and nyaggers.
I play majsoul.
mahjong soul gives you best girl at start so it's superior
Anime when?
There is one already
"Please forgive, Ichihime. She is an idiot. We have purposefuly trained her wrong. As a joke!"
"I am in furiten, making me the victor"
>"I am in furiten, making me the victor"
>calls tsumo anyway
shills play the latter
MS is the most israeli one of the two thoughbeit.
>shills
?? Is there worse monetization or something in Riichi City? I only do majsoul.
no, people just shill it here
Other way around, monetization is better in Riichi City which is causes sunk cost players screech every time someone mentions RC.
Riichi City literally copied everything in Mahjong Soul but fixes a couple minor annoying details (nip names for yaku, doesn't cover the pool after a win). If the MJS devs fixed these, RC would be effectively dead.
Mahjong Soul is pretty brutal though for F2Ping cosmetics, and the emotes are more expressive so RCgays are rightfully ridiculed.
ok but all of the characters in riichi city suck
You talking shit about my wife?
my e-girl wife is cute tho
She's the nyagger of Riichi City tho.
I don't mind
satomi arai sexo
RC also has more options available when it comes to lobbies and it also has a steam client that's not locked behind china.
It also has different ranked system that filters overfolding 3rd place acceptance jade room players
As anon said
if MJS devs did even a bit of effort, RC would be dead as basically why bother if MJS was perfect.
Two years have passed, MJS devs only recently started to move(copying new player 7-day quest from RC, updating tutorial)
And this part actually highlights the other good side of RC, devs actually care about the game and player requests and improve it month by month steadily.
It's weird how they actually respond to suggestions on the steam community forum.
You can also email devs and get non-copypasted response like within 24 hours, at least it was for me when i shared some suggestions.
I have mad respect to any game developer that eats own slop and cares about it. It's sad, but it's very rare quality these days.
it's fun though
i learned how to play Hearts once for about a month and that's pretty much a lifetime's worth of learning to play obtuse games for me, thanks
>friend brings over a card game based on trick-taking shit like hearts
>it's further complicated by not letting you see your own hand
i don't see the appeal
only mahjong ive ever played is the win7 one where you match tiles and thats not even actual mahjong i found out
Cute thread you got here.
Board games drain the life out of me, they exist as a last measure to keep your sanity when theres literally nothing else to do for days and thats it.
And by "board games" I assume you mean "roll dice, move token, do thing"? Cause that's not what mahjong is. Mahjong is Poker on steroids.
board games are great homosexual
boards games are for socializing and bonding above all. you re probably some autist that only cares about optimizing and winning
Board games are better than video games nowadays, have been for the past 5 years.
id like board games more if i had irk friends
That applies for video games as well to be fair.
same, playing with anons in TTS has been an appropriate substitute tho
Can you get a yakuman with nagashi mangan?

Baseball was far harder
>tsumo. tanyao. 300/500 all
how do you respond to this without sounding mad?
I don't respond because I already did it twice this match, and we're playing East.
If you have trouble figuring out mahjong im convinced you suffer from mental moronation.
Mahjongsisters how do i git gud?
Deal in rate too high, learn how to fold against riichi
Fuuro rate is on low side, but win rate is bad so you don't really utilize closed hand efficiently
RB1
Many thanks!
https://euophrys.itch.io/mahjong-efficiency-trainer - you can also use this, but after reading RB1 as it's a bit shitty software that counts acceptance and folding danger a bit wrongly.
Trainer tab is for efficiency(tile acceptance)
Folding tab is for folding.
Obviously in real game you will get harder decisions sometimes, like push vs fold, but basically you should aim for 8000+ value in your hand if you want to push non-safe tiles.
>learn how to fold against riichi
not him but what does this mean?
I farmed 20(or 30?) of the insta-win tiles in Lost Judgment to do the Mahjong challenges for 100% instead of learning mahjong.
Just Kokushi every hand my dude
Mahjong's fine and actually fun, I refuse to actually learn shogi
explain suji i am moron
The trick part is the fact that if 7 is safe tile, it doesn't makes 4 also safe(as it can be 23 waiting shape), but if 4 is dropped, then 1 and 7 are safe from ryanmen wait.
tfw im so autistic with achievements/trophies (i collect them all in a game, always) i will not play the yakuza series because of this, and I fricking ADORE everything i've seen about yakuza
one of my worst feels in gaming, genuinely. im not learning fricking majong, i even lightly attempted it and it was the most confusing shit of all time, only for other people to be like
its simple xDDD
>achievement autist is too low IQ to understand a simple game
Checks out.
dont be jelly ive got more achievements than u
Who gives a shit about achievements?
you probably took the best course of action for the wrong reason. mahjong is the most approachable of the random learnable shit they chuck in. it's shogi that's the fricker if you're a completionist.
i got the "win a shogi match with no takebacks" in kiwami 2 by making mirroring the game against an online bot on "hard"
i recommend suicide, unironically
rope is a meme, overdose on sleeping pills instead
Mahjong is one of the easier ones tbh. I am telling (You)...baseball is the hardest, by far.
Cool thing is once you get one yakuza plat, you pretty much have 90% of the skills you'll need to get the rest. Then the stockholm syndrome kicks in, and you look for comfort in climax battles, gambling minigames and all the other bullshit in every title
>just played a hanchan
>was in dead last in south 4 with 15k points but no one else is above 30k
>ron dealer with a riichi chiitoi
>west round, i'm dealer
>double ron the same guy with another player
>still not in 1st
>bonus round
>riichi on a 3/6/9 sou wait
>the hand is worth frick all but i can keep my streak going
>player across immediately plays a 9 sou
>riichi, ippatsu, 2 ura dora (on the 9 sou)
>get 1st
I hate mahjong so much it's unreal but when you win like that, you can't help but feel good about it.
Riichi City is the nicer client and feels good but majsoul is where my whalebux are...I think I'll just play both
i know you NYAGGERS are here
host the room
do it NOW
I'm at work. Ask again in an hour at lunch so my coworkers can watch me play "Japanese Rummikub" and mock me for my choice of waifu
Is that a bad hand
It's got no Yaku because it made a sequence with a Terminal tile so you can't win with it
It has no Yaku, so the nyagger has very few ways of actually winning with it (and even then it'd be worth almost nothing), so yes
If you have to ask then you'll never get out of bronze room
So where are the rooms?
If you never play you never lose

WHY DO YOU c**tS ALWAYS NEED THE 4TH OF A FRICKNG SEMI-SAFE TILE
IMMA LOSE IT
Rule of thumb, there is no such thing as "safe" if it isn't in their discards
>SEMI-SAFE
You either betaori, or you don't keep track of the discards and just assemble your chad hand.

it's worth it to cuck the double riichi
Double riichi oya is pretty dangerous, guy made the optimal move.
NO GUTS
Why?
Your cuckushi win rate with that is ~3.39% in general. You're against double riichi so your win rate plummets to near 0. It's an instant abort.
see
9 terminals/honors is common enough that it's silly to go for kokushi every time. Unless it's sanma. With 10 you can consider it.

For me its
