you're missing one
2
Did you try walking left from Lavender Town after flying there after pressing start to prevent a battle with a trainer with a single slowpoke?
How could anybody ever figure shit like this out? Or missingno for that matter?
it happens once randomly, someone talks about it, people try to replicate and start to figure out how it works
the mew thing in particular i would guess was probably "discovered" after emulators were a thing
>it happens once randomly
I dunno, all those steps, sequentially, seems too much to just be "random".
it's very simple to discover that you can fly away from a fight
then to discover that it can cause weird stuff to happen, so then you mess around with it
someone discovers it makes encounters happen at lavender
then that the encounter changes depending on what you do before going to lavender
it's really not that hard to believe, particularly since message boards and mailing lists were already a thing at the time.
>it's very simple to discover that you can fly away from a fight
>then to discover that it can cause weird stuff to happen, so then you mess around with it
Fair. Though, as much as I played the games when I was a kid, I'm surprised I never got the "trainer battle on the same step I encounter a wild pokemon" thing to happen, even accidentally. I think I might've tried pausing, seeing that it didn't work, and thought no more about it. All that shit would've been way beyond me as a kid.
>I dunno, all those steps, sequentially, seems too much
it wasn't all discovered in one go. people found out the exclamation mark glitch+fly and then tried lots of funny shit until someone found a way to trigger an encounter, etc.
>they continue to use the two version format
why wouldn't they keep selling 1 game when they can double dip?
> using an event flag to determine which title screen, legendary, and handful of version exclusive pokemon you get
so would you rather they mess around with the insides of the game?
it's basically the same as asking hardware makers to literally cut traces off their GPUs instead of just using binning and firmware to ungimp performance (of double precision floats). it costs them extra money for no benefit other than to screw the goyim.
>mew glitch
someone walks in view of an offscreen trainer, pauses, flies away, finds the textboxes are weird, goes back to the trainer to finish the battle. The glitch is setup to go
>missingno
someone decides to grind on tentacools on the water next to cinnabar, notices encounters are wrong, starts messing around with it
I'd imagine either some kid got bored and stumbled across it, or a QA tester decided to go looking for bugs/glitches.
Mew Glitch took several years to be found.
if you throw several million monkeys at a piece of software, all of its bugs will eventually be found
Nobody tell him
ITS UNDER THE TRUCK IN SS ANNE
best post in the thread
I cannot fathom how this moronic rumor came to be.
You can't? It's a unique truck sprite that doesn't appear anywhere else in the game and is on an island that is normally inaccessible unless you traded in an early Pokemon with surf. It may not have any specific tie to Mew, but it's easy to see how people would find this unique secret and assume there was something special about it. Also keep in mind how limited space was on a GB cart, particularly with Pokemon (there are plenty of videos on how Iwata basically made the game possible at all). You don't get to just include a bunch of extra shit that served no purpose
That seems plausible. They must have made it intending it to do something, but later just scrapped whatever they made it for and decided to put it somewhere in the game
You would think some stupid trick about talking to the old man in veridian city and surfing up and down cinnibar island will give you unlimited nuggets and rare candies, but that school yard rumour turned out to be true
You forgot to catch Missingno
OP is clearly Missingsomebitches
You clearly missed the website you clicked on
Trust me dude, you gotta evolve electrode to level 100 with the Gameboy upside down. That's how you unlock his third form, Electroll.
>Gameboy upside down.
i'm glad they made that an actual evolution, i like these silly evo methods.
did you check here?
That's the front of the truck you idiot. Mew is at the back of the truck.
You actually need to use HM Strength with a lvl 100 Machamp
Wrong, it's Rhyhorn. His pokedex entry specifically states that he sends trailers flying.
Strength on the boat, specifically. And it MUST be a Tuesday.
I wanna know what little homosexual started this rumor
I know what you mean but I love these kinds of pre internet rumors where you just see something that catches your eye and make all these wild assumptions about whatever else you can't figure out in the game. The Pendant in Dark Souls 1 was kind of like that, and the Ice Key from Banjo Kazooie that eventually got put back in.
>box says you can collect 150 monsters
>there are actually 152
What the actual frick?!?
There are only 151
Pokedex entry 000 anon
oh, that doesn't count.
So Mew doesnt count either since there's no way to get one in any legit way gay
You could get Mew legitimately, but you had to do it by attending IRL pokemon events that were officially sanctioned by nintendo.
t. just looked up how to get Mew
Hence in any legit way, there's no permanent event or way to get it, so you are only stuck at 150
if putting it into an Official© game shark at an event that gives you mew is legit, doing it with a normal one is close enough.
Thats not legit, so you can say the only way to get 151 is cheating or abusing glitches, same could be said about catching THE most iconic glitch in Video game history
nobody said missingno didn't count because of how it's obtained.
It doesn't count as a pokemon the same way a tupperware lid isn't a plate. You COULD use it as one, but it's not the same thing.
Can you catch it, use it in battle, lvl it up, put it in your team and learn moves? Of fricking course you can, what the frick else you need to consider it a real pokemon?
I caught a missingno on my Red cartridge because I read online that you can use a rare candy to turn it into a Kangaskhan and it bricked the cartridge. I couldn't save games anymore, only start new ones
You needed to play through it and trigger the save unfrickening with missingno again.
that's not a pokemon, it's a force of nature akin to the wind or ocean
They can't ALL be 000, that's no fair.
Well, it is and it isn't
That area button has to be the most useless thing ever, never actually helped me at all
really? i haven't played RBY in a long time, but the Area button is invaluable in GSC onward
For tracking down roaming legendaries.
That's the only time you ever need to use it in GSC
The area button in RBY isn't really that bad but it's lacking some info - namely it doesn't tell you about Pokemon you can fish for and it doesn't tell you about any Pokemon you can catch in Cerulean Cave.
As a kid I liked to sometimes look at my pokedex and see where you can find what Pokémon.
I used it a lot but remember getting mad as frick chasing the dogs and Latios/Latias using it
My dad works at Nintendo and he can put Pikablu on your game I just need to borrow it for a week. I already have it but I'm not allowed to show you and my dog ate my gameboy so I have to wait two weeks for another one so I can show you my save file with it. Anyways I just need your gameboy for 3 weeks and you can complete the dex trust me bro
In middle school some kid offered to grind my pokemon team up to level 100 if I lent him the cart, and my tard ass did.
He actually went through with it and returned it without issue. Might have used an action replay but I don't care.
I thought he came off as a bit annoying/rude, but now I feel bad, cause he was actually pretty cool
>middle school
Anon are you Italian, and was the game Pearl? I might be your school mate
I was gonna ask, "why would he even offer to do that?", and then I remembered I offered to help my friend beat a spot in the PS1 Harry Potter game. Why do we do it?
>friend had a 360 when they were brand new
>but it was at his dad's house
>friend had a PSP when they were brand new
>but his brother smashed it against the wall at his dad's house and it was thrown out
>world's best PC
>at his dad's
>had sex in a boat
>while on vacation with his dad
for a guy who spent 2 weeks out of the year at his dad's, he sure managed to live a wild and crazy life
>finally one of us get to go to this mythical "dad's" and it's a fricking shack in the middle of nowhere with less than any of us had
>he denies it like crazy
what a guy
missingno glitch can be used to duplicate rare candies. it's entirely possible he did that
yeah, but it might of just used rare candies, in which case he fricked you over.
What a bro
Do you think he ever gets tired?
Underrated post.
>he didn't find and catch Pikablu
my friend had this japanese pokemon card and said this was pikablu. When I got pokemon silver i was mad
well it was known as pikablu at the time, he didn't lie to you
It is Pikablu. They just changed the name once the nickname blew their cover for a water evo.
Can Sazmddd still be alive?!
Ok I actually did it and it's frankly really funny how little of a shit the game gives about you completing the Dex like ok Oak frick you I'm not doing this again in Gen 2.
what did you even expect to happen?
also do any of the newer games even have anything coded to happen if you complete the dex?
i know some of them give you a shiny charm to increase the change of finding a shiny by 0.000005%
When the shiny charm was originally introduced in B2W2 it increased the shiny rate from 0.012% to 0.036%, and from XY onwards the base rate was increased so now the charm takes it from 0.024% to 0.073%
And in the newer games you can raise the shiny rate even higher to 0.77% max.
Yes, you get a certificate and the shiny charm.
I dunno isn't this supposed to be Oak's dream or something?
I thought he'd give a more heartfelt speech than "Oh wow congratulations!"
Like idk have it so he tells you to take over the lab or he can finally retire in peace or something.
At least have the credits roll again so it feels kind of significant!
I don't believe Oak is the one who gives you the certificate actually, I believe you need to take your Pokedex to the Gamefreak developer building in Celadon City.
Yeah I did both, Oak just literally says "good job dude" and the dev's speech isn't much better he just flashes the diploma unceremoniously without any fanfare or anything.
I wonder if he would've battled you or something since he actually has a functional team unused in the game.
It's common knowledge that he was at one point planned to be the secret final boss, kind of like how red was in GSC
Was Red actually Ash
JP fandom generally recognizes Red and Ash as being the same character.
Westoids foam at the mouth at the thought of comparing Ash to Red.
>Westoids foam at the mouth at the thought of comparing Ash to Red.
???
There's literally a series of OVA that retells the story of Pokemon Blue where Trainer Red has distinguishably different design and personality compared to Ash.
I agree, but its a Game Boy game... what do you expect? In reality, when you consider that some of those Pokemon are literally extinct and had to be brought back to life from fossils, some are mere legends, and one was artificially created, it really should be seen as an impossible task
have oak give you the one starter that was left behind at the start. Maybe you got the other starter in your pokedex by trading it back and forth, so you might still want it
>but its a Game Boy game... what do you expect?
Yeah obviously you can say that now, but as a kid? I expected SOMETHING more.
Also the game has a whole extravagant sequence when you beat the Elite Four so I don't think it'd be asking for much to have something similar for completing the Dex.
Emerald gives you a Johto starter if you complete the Hoenn dex. I think HGSS and ORAS do something similar.
Most of them give you a printed certificate and some give you items to help get shinies or exp or whatever.
>also do any of the newer games even have anything coded to happen if you complete the dex?
they all do to some extent, the one that stands out is Legends Arceus where completing the pokedex is actually one of the main goals
What'd be great is if completing the pokedex unlocked a ng+ with some kind of twist, like a randomizer mode where each Pokémon gets a random set of attacks. Imagine starting your NG+ playthrough and coming across a Rattata that tries to use harden and tailwhip a couple of times before suddenly busting out hyper beam.
They still kind of don't give a shit unless you find value in the shiny charm.
You're supposed to print it off with the gameboy printer and mail it to the people who made the game, I heard thats how you get Mew
I remember getting this screen. Goddamn I was mad
>named yourself RED
soulless do you have any sense of identity? be proud of who you are man
>zoomie cant appreciate the journey
Many such cases.
What's the lore reason why people thought there were only 150 pokemon and now there's like 1000 or more?
Back when pokemon was created, they were newly discovered creatures and you are legit cataloging them for the first time. This is carried over to GSC.
Then it was completely retconned by gen 3.
So pokemon just suddenly appeared one day?
Pokemon have a literal god that created the universe, the Pokemon, and the people in it.
no pokemon already existed with humans and according to newer games they also fricked with humans
wars were also fought with pokemons
technically, i mean ash just created his own pokemon with mega greninja, is not that out if the field that arceus just created them one day and changed human history and everyones memories like mewtwo in the movie.
The anime had an Onix that turned to crystal just by staying in a damp cave. Let's not mesh the games and the anime together here.
but the games have mons that evolve when touching rocks
i can evolve into skinlesspainman by touching a certain spicy rock for long enough
>So pokemon just suddenly appeared one day?
they've always been there. somehow nobody had thought to catalog them before prof oak, at least in Kanto.
you're thinking too deep into it now
kinda, the original lore is that they were some sort of cryptids in a normal world like ours, thats why the original games have references to actual real world animals. During gen 3 it was retconned to "they always existed instead of our animals"
there was a literal war that used pokemon before the first games wtf are you babbling about
Yeah that's a good point. All these people saying "pokemon were new", and somehow I don't remember anything pointing to that at all. I knew I wasn't crazy. At the very beginning, Oak is like "welcome to the world inhabited by creatures called pokemon". They already existed.
https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Pocket_Monsters_Encyclopedia
that was the original lore, while pokemon existed, they were like cryptids. They were still being discovered by the 1990s.
They found more.
Pokedex was developed my Oak, specifically to catalog all Pokemon.
There are 150 native to Kanto as a region, going into Gold and Silver, Oak was already in talks with Elm and Mr. Pokemon about Pokemon research, it pretty much branches out from there.
The Pokemon from gen 2 were marketed as 'newly discovered species' and stuff like that. Then after the games and accompanying media came out and they stopped being the shiny new marketable thing, they were retconned into always having been there. This is how it works, generally, though with subsequent gens they could also fall back on the 'native to the new region' excuse as well.
Each region is litteraly a seperated region. The game takes liberties with tech being modern but the setting is supposed to also be like your typical olden Japan style story where communication between lands is minimal and the only way to discover things is travelling.
Each new region has its own original Pokemon. Hoenn would be equally surprised that such a thing as a Weezing exists.
>many years ago some guy writes a post in broken English on a Pokemon secrets website that contains a string of seemingly random actions that let you capture Mew in Y/R/B
>it actually fricking works
I wish I could've read the comments of the first people who tried it
Is it the bridge glitch? I assume thats it but I dont remember who you have to fight to trigger specifically Mew. Apparently you can catch anything this way if you trigger the right code going into the fight
The mew glitch, sometimes known as the trainer fly glitch. It can be used to trigger anything in the game to appear, including glitch pokemon and even trainer battles, with proper setup.
(don't do it with trainer battles though it royally glitches up the game)
You want to know what's crazy? Anons back then were able to find this glitch without any walk through or outside help. Same with missingno.
The crazy part is that Westerners obsessed over that fricking truck for years when Gamefreak purposefully leaked that glitch to catch Mew to the Japanese audience and we wouldn't get it until years later despite abusing the shit out of Missingno.
I replayed yellow 5 years ago just to try it and was shocked when it worked. Shit was cash, mew fricked up everything made the game stupidly ez
mew was limited time, you get mewtwo (151) instead.
This isn't even true
If you are playing with just one cartridge you can only catch something like 117 without trading/glitches
No it explicitly tells you to link to Pokemon Blue
Also you can get 125 Pokemon without linking.
one of the things I hate the most about Nu-pokemon is that they continue to use the two version format despite literally just using an event flag to determine which title screen, legendary, and handful of version exclusive pokemon you get.
all of this just to fool kids into buying two copies of the same game.
>despite literally just using an event flag to determine which title screen, legendary, and handful of version exclusive pokemon you get
anon that's exactly the same as it's always been. all the pokémon exist on red and blue, since you can trade between them. if anything nowadays the versions have a lot more difference than they did in the past.
There were some slight differences in the sprite work in blue and red, same with Gold and Silver, they got lazy at gen 3
oh you're right i completely forgot about that. i don't think it's particularly interesting honestly. having exclusive legendaries or even gyms like in SwSh is much more impactful (that was one of the few good things about SwSh).
He didn't say they didn't, but they should have stopped, it's pointless and greedy.
>all of this just to fool kids into buying two copies of the same gam
no moron, why would kids even do this today if they can just pay less for online and get all the mons
You can get 152 pokemons without having to connect to nothing anon
Yeah, but we're talking glitchless here
i hate that all of the POKEMON names, locations, KEY ITEMS, are all capitalized in gen 1-4. what the frick was their problem?
that's what it actually looks like to pander to a wider audience. You highlight the important terms when someone is talking to you, if an NPC says "i went to the beach yesterday" in all lowercase, it's filler text, if the NPC says "I saw a DUGTRIO at the beach the other day" it's a hint at where to catch a pokemon
Free
>didn't collect Missingno. and 'M
Click on the truck 100 times and you'll get mew
I was planning my team for Gen 2 and was genuinely taken aback by this lol not all Pokemon are created equal I guess
movesets were all garbage prior to gen 4, arguably gen 5 even.
I dunno I feel like for Gen 1 I was actually able to put together a pretty solid team with good moves - maybe I just got lucky with the pokemon choices
>final evolutions are locked behind trade evolution
>no friends to trade with
>just buy the other version of the game, a link cable and another Gameboy dude
>paywalled
>can't catch em all
I had a gamegenie got 151 sucka
Did you catch Terraquatro?
There's actually 151 in the original red/blue. Tho you can't catch Mew. Can only get Mew either by gameshark or get it from a offical event they hosted at Toys R Us or Gamestop.
>He didn't find the secret cave in Cerulean City and fight the secret boss
