      Anonymous

Yeah Octopath 2's mixed sales is due to Octopath being a glorified tech demo for the 2DHD engine
It all feels so disconnected, I can't help but lose interest. It does do some interesting things that I like, but it's just lacking a strong, coherent story with proper pacing. Instead, it has 8 main stories all just clashing together in a big mishmash where your party doesn't exist inside of cutscenes, leading to enough le ludonarrative dissonance to put a bad taste in my mouth.

Such a thing has basically already been done anyway. FFPR's goal was to bring 1-4 up to 5's standards graphically, which it accomplished. Something similar for Dragon Quest would be 1-5 in 6's style. 3 already got that back on SNES, while 1 and 2 got it on Mobile. All that would be left are 4 and 5, both of which got remakes in 7's style instead.

I imagine they're being extra careful of it because DQ is basically a national heritage for a lot of older gamers.
With how rocky Square has been lately, fricking up DQ (and I think 3 is one of the most beloved out of the mainline titles) could be fatal for the company's image.

      Anonymous

I don't know how many people consider DQ3 their favorite of the series, but it's definitely the most iconic. Dragon Quest 3 is to JRPGs what Super Mario 64 is to 3D platformers, or Doom to first-person shooters. It's the game that defined what the genre is, and everyone else is just building on the foundation that it laid, even if they don't realize it.

      Anonymous

The guys making DQ have basically always been separate from Squeenix proper. Armor Project is Horii's own production staff and usually they work with contracted developers like Chunsoft or TOSE
But yeah if they frick up DQ3 of all games they'd get a lot of people mad.

For DQ3 it's less development hell and more just unfortunate timing. They said development had just started when the game was announced. For all we know the trailer wasn't actually gameplay and just a mockup. Since then, the internal HD2D devs at SE had to get Triangle Strategy, Live a Live and Octopath 2 out the door.

      Anonymous

It baffles me that they prioritized all that garbage over the one title people actually want.
OT2 especially was announced post-DQIIIHD2D and released before we even got the first bit of info about DQIII. Who the frick asked for it? Nobody, judging by the sales

      Anonymous

      >For all we know the trailer wasn't actually gameplay and just a mockup.

So, what's the appeal of DQIII? Playing the SNES TL and so far mashing A has served me pretty well, I've already been everywhere in the map and the only bosses were Generic Axe Bandit twice and Orochi, and now I need the 6 Mc'Guffins, 3 of which are handed to you in a platter.

      Anonymous

      >So, what's the appeal of DQIII?
It was a lot of Japanese boomers' first RPG with any real depth in terms of character builds or branching paths. The plot isn't very interesting and it's a little simple by the standards of the time.

JRPGs didn't really become good until they established their own style and conventions in the 90s (outside of some experimental PC shit from companies like Falcom). From DQ1 until like DQV, they were really just dumbed-down PC RPG experiences rooted in the series' creators fondness for Ultima.

Personally I love DQ. I love the comfy Toriyama art and the simple stories and the lighthearted dialogue. But I'm under no illusions about the series being anything remarkable until the 16-bit era

Eh, I would say until around the fourth generation. A lot of it had to do with hardware limitations keeping devs from going crazy with storytelling and mechanics. They had to find a way to increase playtime, so they made the games awfully grindy and fill them with Wizardly-like traps. Phantasy Star 1 is what you get when the technology is just getting there but they haven't quite let go of old practices just yet.

And before anyone says anything, the reason DQ never hit big in the west was because of shit timing with the localzation. DQ3 is more advanced than the first FF, but FF1 is far and away the more complex game than DQ, and guess which one we got first? This issue only only got worse with future localziations, and the SNES game never getting an offical western localization until YEARS after they were relevant

      >So, what's the appeal of DQIII?
It's when the DQ formula was realized. Micro narratives with simple but engaging gameplay. It's a series that doesn't rely on gimmicks, the bread and butter of the genre.

don't get me wrong, port the game with a proper hud to offset the DS, and give it native resolution graphics like they did with the mobile ports of the mainline DS games and I'll be completely content. If they do another RE2 like game where you're confined to building, I think they need to incorporate more environment interactions. Like you can push aside lockers to open paths, but why not push them back over to block off paths for enemies? Why can't we just break down doors with some sort of risk of the sound alerting enemies? Why can't I jump out the windows and risk zombie fights to avoid more dangerous lickers is the hallways?

That really doesn't mean anything. And they weren't even the primary developers for many of the Dragon Quest games they've worked on.
They didn't have anything to do with 9 or 10, so that's not even "all previous DQ releases" as you say. And they wouldn't have had anything to do with 11 either had 2D mode not been a thing, since that's all they worked on for that game.

at the mid point when you start getting advanced jobs it really feels like "aww shit yeah its all coming together" then you find most/every basic job only advances to one advanced job, so its not truly that complex, and the lack of direction just frickin sucks to the point where you may as well just use a guide rather than fly all around the world and guess which npc is going to give you a loose hint of where to go.
Im not going to say any DQ games are particularly great at hyping the final bad guy save for like 4 and 5, but 6s final boss is introduced by the second to last boss and then you fight the final boss and its so frickin gay and underwhelming. I could go for hours about how 6 is almost the best game in the series, but hard cemented as the (second) worst

The main issue with the job system isn't really even the linearness cause 7 barely changed it besides adding more 3rd tier jobs other than Hero, 6 just isn't fricking long enough for the number of battles they required for each job and warping back to the abbey constantly to change them or else waste those battles kinda sucked
The other issue is Knuckle Sandwich being like 10x stronger than everything else for such a huge stretch of the game makes most fights pretty brainless

If you don't intentionally stop and grind you'll maaaaaybe get the useful moves out of 1 job for him by the end of the game when you already probably built Hero and Carver into physical beatsticks by that point. And you're better off just grabbing Lizzie as an overpowered random encounter deleter instead

and both are better than every party member in VII, except maybe Mervyn
Ruff and Aishe don't have personalities, and Maribel is a c**t the whole game who makes the adventure less fun
VII is a long ass game, which would be fine if the party along for the adventure was fun and interesting but VII doesn't provide that.

Nevan is the worst party member in the entire series and Terry is non character, totally wasted. Maybe if he had joined sooner but they saved the sibling reveal for the absolute last minute of the game.
Aishe is lame but if you're shit talking Ruff you're a homosexual.

every single party chat line Ruff has outside of his joining story is "I don't know whats going on, I'm a dog"
Nevan isn't an antagonistic c**t the entire time hes around you, which by default makes him better than Maribel. He also has a slight hint of a personality if for some reason you don't use Carver, Milly, and Ashlynn as your main team so that makes him better than Aishe.

Maribel hurt your feefees in the intro and you went blind with rage every other time she said anything for the rest of the game?

no she was annoying and ugly until she left the party, then I never let her join again

I love VI and think VII is an exhausting slog with bad characters
its an adventure to find yourself, both figuratively and literally, the lack of direction is intended. If you pay attention to the worlds, you mostly only have one new place to go after every story beat that expands how you can travel

        >bad characters
I will concede that Carver/hassan, muriel, and barbara are great while so far mirabel is CBT and keifer is a little underwhelming. Its weird that DQ has had musclemen throughout but only what, 1 game has the muscleman as a party member.

ArtePiazza was working on SMRPG. I assume they put DQ3HD on hold for it.
