Halo CE is a masterpiece, yet to this day it remains under the firm, hairy grip of Microsoft. As many Free Software re-implementations of classic games exist, such as OpenMW for Morrowind (soon to include Oblivion and Skyrim), the many Doom and Quake sourceports (using GPL'd code), and others such as OpenRA and Arx Libertatis, it saddens me that no such alternatives exist for Halo. The best we'll have is the MCC, which is buried under multiple DRM measures including the need for a Microsoft account. As the fight for game preservation continues, it saddens me that such a significant game remains under lock and key. I don't know what it takes to kickstart a project like this, but I would be willing to donate towards any endeavour to create an "Open Halo" project.
Halo Infinite exist and look how that turned out...
why? what good could come from this?
Preservation, ease of play for multiple platforms, better mod support, no DRM.
all those things are already sufficiently available with the MCC on PC.
Better use those funds for a new Open IP instead of feeding MS copyright lawyers.
That would be ideal. But that would require creating new assets from scratch, and we'd need an engine that plays as similarly to Halo as possible. An "Open Halo" could serve two purposes, a method of playing the original Halo CE as DRM-free as possible, and to run a Free asset replacement like Freedoom.
>Guy talking about rebuilding an entire game engine with zero access to source or documentation
>Making assets is somehow harder than that in his mind
>Making an engine is hard
>Making an engine + assets is even harder
Truly a head scratcher, eh Zoomie?.
Anon one of those is several orders of magnitude harder than the other
It's like saying "I'm sure we can build an orbital rocket, but painting it is too much work!"
CEs engine is old, outdated and not even that good to begin with.
Better stick with something up-to-date like UE5 or Unity.
>UE5 or Unity
KEEEEEKEKEKEKEKEKEKEKEKEKE. Oh wait you're serious, lemme laugh even harder. KEEEEKEKEKEKEKEKEKEKEKEKEKEEEEEEEEE
Yes. UE5 or Unity are unironically better than the blam engine from the year 2000.
UE5 and Unity are complete jokes, it doesn't matter how """good""" (lol) their rendering is or how advanced it seems to you. They are bloated, slow, and most importantly- are closed source. Basing a Free and Open project on UE5 and Unity would be the dumbest thing anyone can do.
I'm not recommending UE5 or Unity. I'm advising against blam.
It seems we may have an engine similar to Blam after all, at least an early one. https://elaztek.com/projects/blamite/index/
Feel free to start coding an engine from scratch lmao
You sure are demanding for someone that clearly has zero technical capacity
>Why not build a house on sand?
>Building a house on sand is moronic
>OH YEAH, THEN WHY DON'T YOU BUILD YOUR OWN HOUSE THEN?!
4Chudders really are children, aren't they?.
Terrible analogy.
A better one would be
>"Which foundation should we use, slab or crawlspace?"
>LMAO U moron THOSE SUCK
>"Ok, then, dipshit, start digging."
If you genuinely think reverse engineering an engine with no documentation or access to source is simple then read programming for dummies and get started.
I already know C++. Anyways, it's hardly "reverse engineering"; Halo is so mechanically simple that there is not really anything hidden to reverse engineer, besides reading whatever format they packed their assets in.
>I already know C++ and reverse engineering an engine on outdated hardware is totally simple bro
Then get to it.
Pay us first, you cheap Black person.
That'd be like giving a small child money to build a rocket ship. A waste.
You're not contributing to this conversation, so frick off. Pest.
>GIVE ME FREE MONEY
>DO THIS JOB I ASSUME IS EASY BECAUSE I HAVEN'T DONE ANYTHING LIKE IT
Offer an actual sum of money for the tremendous undertaking you're begging for or shut the frick up
Busy making a strategy game, sorry. Fact remains that the programming side of Halo is pretty lightweight, relatively speaking. Especially today when you have better graphics APIs, libraries for stuff Bungie would have had to do themselves (such as networking), better IDEs and hardware for faster development, and the C++ language is in a vastly better state than it was back then. I don't think people appreciate how much of a difference C++11 made vs older versions of the language, or the shitshow that is C.
>It's easy to build an (open source) engine at parity with this old tech by bolting together shit other people made
You really don't understand the task.
You aren't a programmer.
I am, but more than that I'm a solutions architect. It's my job to know what goes into a task, how hard it will be, and how long it will take.
Building a generic fps with open source libraries isn't that tough, sure. Harder than you clearly think, but not a huge undertaking.
Breaking down Halo's physics and the exact methods they used for things like hitreg is a huge undertaking even with documentation. Without it you're up shit creek without a paddle. MCC couldn't get it done with access to the source.
Doom's engine is open source, thats why Freedoom is possible. Halo's engine isnt. If you want OpenHalo you need to rewrite the engine and make free assets like Openttd did and Halo doesnt have enough mods or autists to justify that
Which game would you Open?
Bump for interest, I guess.
Anyone try any good workshop mods lately? I still think the best one was Ruby's Rebalanced, but I'm curious if anyone else has found some gems.
>but I would be willing to donate
How much? Recreating a game like Halo isn't an easy endeavor.
$70, the price of a new AAAA video game. So long as no trannies or pajeets are involved.
Lmao, frick off
Cry harder. You will never be a real woman.
If you're reusing CE's existing assets it probably wouldn't actually be a huge deal.
Well I guess anyone could do it then, amirite?
Anyone with decent programming knowledge, yeah.
The source code isn't available. End of story.
The source code wasn't available for OpenMW either.
And OpenMW isn't actually an open source version of Morrowind. It's some gay's total engine rebuild from scratch that he simply claims is "at parity"
"Masterpiece" is pushing it a bit anon, and I loved the game.
just play splitgate if you want classic halo so bad
Just make it in UE5 with blueprints.
Halo modders are allergic to making their creations available.
>Halo is a masterpiece
it's a primitive console myfirstfps.jpg that is mastered within 5 minutes of playing
Objectively wrong.
Step 1. Make it a "Halo inspired game"
Step 2. Realize that max hoberman publically talked about the design of the MP and put out the design documents for the MP systems
Step 3. Get it far enough to have something show worthy
Step 4. Crowd fund & Profit
