Can we habe a Metroidvania thread? Or whatever you want to call it, Metroid-like, Iga-vania, etc.
Recently started to play Blasphemous and it is amazing, the gameplay isn't bad, the difficulty is well adjusted, the visuals are insanely gorgeous, amazing game overall
Also I completed Bloodstained yesterday and I wasn't expecting it to be basically Aria of Blood 3. Great game
What MVs are you currently playing? What are you looking forward to? What games do you recommend?
>Aria of Blood 3
*aria of sorrow 3
>Hollow Knight STILL has 5000 players on Steam minimum all the time
How did they do it
It's a genuinely good and fun game with lots of content that rewards you for getting good at it's systems.
It's an overly popular meme game that is averagely good and can run on every toster.
what are some much better games that deserve the hype hk has?
Rabi Ribi
Ender Lillies
Lost Ruins
>overly popular
>meme
You can just say you're mad that it's well liked.
Yeah I'm also really mad that among us is well liked but at least it didn't ruined a genre and doesn't over stays it's welcome.
You're pathetic
For a 5 and half year old game it's crazy how much it's just continued to grow since the Silksong announcement. The next ~11 months or so can't go by quickly enough.
The frick? How has it gotten more popular as time has gone on?
That's what happens to classics
It's a game that gets widely shilled and runs on a potato. It's sad because it's not even a particularly good game in the genre.
What is an example of a good game in the genre then
Ori is a real classic
Blind forest is a relatively short game that keeps it's player count stable for years.
It means that people still buys and play it constantly.
Will of the wisps keeps being a top seller even after 2 years and it's also the most played metroidvania after hollow meme knight without counting the Xbox and switch version.
That's how a classic is made.
For me it's the Randomizer mod that still gets updates to this day.
You forgot it has great music
I really wanted to try this game but I don't want to support anti-christian devs
There's the spicy bait. Was wondering why it was taking too long but I guess I should have remembered that Americans are just waking up
How are they anti-christian? I know they used the gothic art style but i played it and i didnt really pick up on any blasphemy :p
Who started this meme?
It's hilarious when Christians refuse to play Christian games because their afraid of being offended.
It's the typical christcuck persecution fetish. Libtards do it too.
>Christian games
It literally says that Catholics are shit and too focused on pointless 'punishment'
I have a Christian friend who refuses to touch The Binding of Isaac since he finds it in bad taste
Binding of Isaac is funny because while it shits hardcore on evangelical style Christianity, it's actually fairly friendly and nice to more peaceful and tame versions of Christianity. Even the final true ending of the game is basically the MC earning his way into Heaven
This sort of post is why I keep returning to this shithole every day
I recently downloaded this game with the final DLC and am trying to go through it again after a break of like 2 years. I bought it a year or so back and played it right after Hollow Knight and was really let down by the gameplay being nowhere near as fun and the game mostly being carried by it's graphics but I'm hoping that now that I've given more space to HK, I can appreciate Blasphemous for what it is.
I also have plans to play through Rain World now that I have a controller that will actually work with it.
Heads up, if you kill the crazy blind b***h before you beat the 2 new bosses, you’ll be shut out of the new content and have to start over. I just learned the hard way.
Blasphemous was carried by its aesthetic, but the gameplay was fun enough that I really enjoyed it.
I hated bloodstained, maybe I had expectations too high from those awesome 2D castlevania bloodstained games, but I just didn't see what it added to the genre. Ugly 3D environments, boring boxy levels with lots of annoying easy to design floating enemies, almost no interesting platforming, fairly boring metroidvania upgrades, underwhelming bosses, ugly 3D art style. Maybe I'll try it again at some point with lower expectations but I do not get the hype
Yeah I dropped Bloodstained too. There was something really weird about the character movement and attacks that made it feel clunkier than even SotN.
Everytime I see vids of that game in action, it looks like the fricking weirdest most floaty shit imaginable
It is floaty and that fun. Eventually, you get powered up and can zoom thru levels like you’re on DBZ
>There was something really weird about the character movement and attacks that made it feel clunkier than even SotN.
is literally the same. Sounds like placebo effect
What placebo? I came right off replaying DoS and it felt significantly worse to play in basically every single way. I was excited to play it but ended up dropping it after a couple hours. I'm a dev by trade and my specialty lies in character movement, combat and gamefeel and this shit was just off. I'd have to replay it to see what the problem is but I honestly don't want to touch that game ever again.
I'm so glad I'm not like this and I can enjoy such a fun game. it feels like the PS2 sequel we never got.
I'm glad you enjoy it even if I find the graphics to be poor.
>even if I find the graphics to be poor.
this is weird, is this how zommers feel when they see ps1 games?
Doubtful considering I can enjoy the likes of Ultima 4 without batting an eye. Perhaps I should have said that I'm happy you can enjoy the game despite it's dogshit aesthetics and presentation
>it's dogshit aesthetics and presentation
but they are great, it has this chunky feeling
>but they are great
You're wrong but hey, I'm glad you can enjoy it. Like I've said
>You're wrong
the overwhelming positive reception is in my favor
>it's popular so every single aspect of it is beloved by everyone and it MUST all be a perfect 10/10
As glad as I am that you enjoyed a terrible game and had fun with it, I must say you're a bit of a moron.
>you enjoyed a terrible game
holy kek
I know. I was shocked you liked it as well.
imagine thinking that its wrong to have fun with a game when the sole purpose of videogames is to provide fun
videogames are not culture, they are products, just toys
>imagine thinking that its wrong to have fun with a game
I said I was happy he had fun with it though? I think you need to work on your reading.
go to bed alex
Shitstained: Ritual of the Shit
I just hateplayed it to completion and I fully agree with everything you wrote. There's a cathartic moment near the end if you upgrade your sharts and get the "frick everything" sword that can just delete every irritating frickhead of an enemy in an instant. It doesn't make it worth it though, horrible game
Also, there's an unbelievable amount of pathetic crowdfunder pandering, portraits of backers everywhere, backers' pets as giant enemies, actual neckbeards as mini bosses on their own rooms, conveniently placed chairs to sit and gaze longingly at the fat fricks with more money than sense.
I just 100% it with all the DLC yesterday. It was a great game with perfect aesthetic. I'm thinking about reading a book now. Any recomandation?
Shadow of the Torturer
thanks
What are you upset about anons? I just said how fun this genre is. Backtracking, which is something that is almost universally talked about in a negative way when talking about other games, is a hallmark of this genre. That must be why it's so fun.
frick off moron, we got it the first time
Second that
Book of the New Sun is great
The name of the Rose by Umberto Eco.
Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy.
I keep seeing people talk about this book, what makes it so great?
>le fat giant bald man represents like, le human abition and war bro xDDDD its so deep
Pseud book and 99% unreadable edgy garbage
Post some examples of books that you think are actually good and intellectual and not pseud then, coward.
Harry potter
OH NO NO NO NO NO
Play Souldiers. It's also a Spanish Metroidvania. It doesn't has music as good as Blasphemous but visually is a middle step between SNES and NeoGeo.
I hear the game is poorly balanced for non warrior classes.
In my experience, the archer is shit and the wizard is the most fun character. Who cares about balance in a single player game.
I really love backtracking to get a minor power up. It's really fun spending 15 minutes to get 1 extra missile. And I love it when I don't know where to go, and then I get a power up, and I have to backtrack to find any doors that open up with this power up. It's even cooler if they put it on the map. so then I know where I have to spend 15 minutes going to to open up the next area. It really makes the world feel alive when you have to spend 15 minutes going from one area back to another area to open up a green door. Sometimes it's not a green door, but like a weird jump that you get a special ability for, which adds a lot of dynamic actions to the game. I like how the games are open world, except they're not.
This genre is not for someone with ADHD looking to get through it as quickly as possible their first time playing.
It's okay if you were filtered but you don't need to be mad about it.
Nobody gives a frick about your shit opinion
Take your medication
what game is that?
>plays a metroidvania
>complains about metroidvania mechanics in the game
are you a literal imbecile?
remember to thank her every time you play an awesome metroidvania, for none of these games would exist without her!
Thank you, jellyfish bird woman.
That's not The Maze of Galious.
Haven't played since launch, but I remember having weird hitboxes and enemies that could potentially permastun you. Were those things fixed?
Yes and its so dead easy now you won’t die at all.
Played and finished Haiku the Robot recently.
Clearly inspired by Hollow Knight, but shorter and simpler. I think it could have used a couple more quick travel spots, but overall it was enjoyable. I did pretty much everything the game had to offer in around 7 hours.
Only thing I'm looking forward to right now is the Steam release of Axiom Verge 2, although I'm not sure I'll enjoy it a lot. Is it good? I wasn't a rabid fan of the first game, but it was solid. The new one doesn't look terribly appealing.
It's one of the worst sequels in its genre. If you weren't big on the first you definitely won't like this one. Move on.
Damn. Maybe I'll "try the demo", if you understand my subtle allusion to the fact that I'm going to pirate the frick out of it.
>Only thing I'm looking forward to right now is the Steam release of Axiom Verge 2, although I'm not sure I'll enjoy it a lot. Is it good? I wasn't a rabid fan of the first game, but it was solid. The new one doesn't look terribly appealing.
Axiom Verge 2 is weird. It's a very different game from the first one. Combat is melee-focused and a step-down, bosses are underwhelming and optional. But I really enjoyed the exploration, the world design is much better.
Overall I liked the game and I recommand playing it. It's a divisive game for good reasons, especially if you expect a true sequel to AV1.
>especially if you expect a true sequel to AV1.
that game was a prequel, everybody knew that.
I started this one yesterday, I'm at the Ten Piedad boss. The art and the music are gorgeous, but something about the gameplay bothers me. The combat is a bit too slow and repetitive for my tastes,
and I definitely would've done without the insta-death spikes.
I've never played a Souls game, and this game does clearly take inspiration from it, so I might simply be not used to some mechanics.
>I've never played a Souls game, and this game does clearly take inspiration from it, so I might simply be not used to some mechanics.
The only thing similar it takes from Souls is that you have a renewable healing source and that deaths are presented as an in-game thing instead of a 'bad end' where you reload your save and it never happened in the narrative or whatever. That and I guess having to recollect your money but that's whatever.
the Spanish voice acting is surreally good, highly recommended for second playthru
I am playing it with the spanish dubs and every line sounds so poetic. They did a great job, excelent voice actors
i put the text in spanish too (:
I wanna play Hollow Knight!!!!!
But I am at work.
Is the true ending worth it? I'm not sure if i want to replay the whole game for it
I tried playing blasphemous but i found the controls to be really really stiff and clunky. should I pick it up again?
Ff it was around launch when you tried it then yes, try it again. some patches have made the controls and movement way more responsive, also the DLCs have added a lot of new areas and bosses to the map
Don't make my mistake, ignoring the game because it looks like weeaboo kusoge trash.
Its really good
>it looks like weeaboo kusoge trash.
pic unrelated?
Unironically the peak of the genre, I feel sorry for everyone who won't give it a chance because of the aesthetic.
>I feel sorry for everyone who won't give it a chance because of the aesthetic.
why would that happen?
Most people would be too embarrassed to have something like that in their steam library
for good fricking reason lmfao, weebs are a disgusting scourge.
This is not the first time I see someone shilling the game. I do hate kawaii uguu e-girl moe uwu designs. I can't stomach it. But I will give it a try just because you guys are insisting so much it has good gameplay
This game gets its dick sucked so much on Ganker I would say this already crossed the overrated on Ganker line. It's an alright game people pretend it is 11/10 around here
>Picked this game up thinking it would be easy because it's weeb trash
>Get instantly filtered by the 2nd boss
This game is fricking awesome.
I want to play it but it's NEVER on a decent sale.
>start game on normal
>a little tricky but not so bad
>find the guy that lets you bump up the difficulty
>game becomes genuinely hard
Ender lillies was pretty fun, beat that recently and now I’m going to try out record of lodoss war
I usually don't like metroidvanias but I liked Infernax.
I very recently found out this exists and now I can't put it down
DoS wasn't my favorite IGAvania but still this is great
There's also one with Primrose and Ophilia for Portrait which is better than DoS which I'll get to after but I love me Tressa
For the record:
AoS
SotN
OoE
PoR
Bloodstained
CotM
DoS
HoD
You are so wrong it isn't even funny. The fact the Bloodstained is even on that list, ESPECIALLY above DoS makes you lose any credibility.
anon you are like in the minority.
I don't care if I'm the minority or not, I'm right. I'll even take it one step further and say that SotN is overrated as frick and while it deserves to be praised for what it did at the time, it's a clunky/floaty piece of shit nowadays. The only truly bad thing about DoS is the generic anime bullshit and the fact that getting certain souls is a grind, but the gameplay and exploration (the things that matter) are far better designed than in SotN.
>SotN is overrated
overrated doesn't exist
Holy frick I want to play this.
Have fun
https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/6849/
Playing other igavania romhacks too via emulators
These are so great
So far I'm enjoying Persephone of Sorrow the most. But I can imagine once I get to Primrose and Ophilia of Ruin, that'll probably be my favorite.
These actually play pretty well on the phone which is pretty nice considering I 100%ed every IGAvania back on my actual GBA and DS aeons ago.
God bless the romhacking community.
I love Blasphemous, but the feeling it evoked of this strange place totally in the grips of fanaticism has been steadily diluted by all the extra content. It’s also a lot easier than it was at release. I wish there was some way I could play an original unpatched version on ps.
Holy shit you have shit taste in metroidvanias to praise shitstained and blasphemous. Next you're going to say axiom verge was good.
>Next you're going to say axiom verge was good.
No, I will say Hollow knight is a masterpiece and there is nothing you can do about it
It is though. Plenty of other meteoidvanias fall well short and you name dropped 2 of the worst (relative to their popularity). The only big name meteoidvanias worse than shitstained are the ori games. Even blasphemous is better than ori.
metroidvanias suck ass tho
I made the thread to talk about what I have been playing recently, I could talk about Super Metroid, Sotn, LaMulana, HK, etc. But I played those games and discussed about them here years ago. I don't give a frick about your taste, I wont talk about what you want, go make your own thread
So is Bloodstained good or not?
YIKES
is reddit knight actually good
it's alright, well made but bloated and doesn't have many interesting ideas
Yeah
Exquisite taste, fren
What does one play after finishing the GBA and DS Castlemanias?
romhacks of GBA and DS Castlemanias
https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/6636/
Seriously though do it
Aria of Sorrow Alter is comfykino
Do you recommend NG+ on Blasphemous? I beat it once and that's it, missed a lot of relics/spells
Yes, totally. In ng+ you chose special penitences which change how the game plays (your flasks heal on mana, your life becomes orbs, weak attacks/reg mana). There’s also a host of new stronger bosses to kill. And all the new penitences drop useful items for your next playthru. Really good ng+ content.
Great game, haven't play the DLC yet though. RN I'm re playing Dread.
good thing Dread's so short you can start blasphemous DLC tonight
I think the concept of Blasphemous that drives its art and its lore carries it hard. I love the game, and after playing it through like six times it only gets more obvious how rough the gameplay is. You can tell it's a first effort but at the same time it's impressive that they managed to hold it all together. The way it does its own thing in terms of controls and mechanics, moves, upgrades and stuff goes a long long way even when it doesn't work.
I feel like Blasphemous 2 is going to be really fricking good too. One of those sequels that builds on the first one and becomes something great. Not a cash in like Axiom Verge 2.
>Not a cash in like Axiom Verge 2
what? that is a very nonsensical statement
How so?
What's "plays fine" mean?
>What's "plays fine" mean?
? idk what you're trying to say just explain what you mean
it plays fine which is less than plays good and more than plays bad
In terms of... ?
i dont want to talk about it
You want to cause you replied to me, but you can't cause you're dumb and you don't know what you're talking about. I know what I am talking about.
no
>after playing it through like six times it only gets more obvious how rough the gameplay is
???? plays fine for me
It plays 'fine', yes. There are a lot of games in the same genre that feel a lot more fun to play. Clearly you haven't played them otherwise you'd get why it's such a common complaint
but is fun that it plays different from other games. Just like I enjoy "megaman x" movement and "castlevania 1" movement both are 10/10 movement for me.
Alright. It's not a 10/10 movement though. It doesn't feel very responsive and movement + combat just isn't really enjoyable
>movement + combat just isn't really enjoyable
dodge-attack-jump-parry, is very simple
Simple doesn't mean good or bad. It just means it's simple
>Simple doesn't mean good or bad. It just means it's simple
okay?
how long is blasphemous
Like 25-30 hours if you truly explore everything
how do i know if im going the right way
if you like girls then you're on the right path
Most paths will always take you to something important. But it's alll intuition, at the end of the day.
Exploring everything? Also some content is NG+ only, so don't worry about it and get a bad ending
I'm so glad Dread was a fun game, I was so worried nintendo was gonna frick it up, I felt like a kid playing super metroid again.
I wound up so happy with Dread that it allowed me to make peace with the fact that MP4 is either going to be vaporware or absolute dogshit
I loved Dread, but I really despise that the map is so fractured and the there's the EMI sections+battles that will take a toll on you as you replay them.
>EMI sections+battles that will take a toll on you
I've beaten the game several times now. I can only think of one EMMI zone that sucks, because it has multiple exits near the top and you need to do them in a certain order.
Every other EMMI zone is extremely quick. You'd be shocked how fast they go. Some normal bossfights take longer.
Anyone tried infernax ? How is it ?
I watched a lot of it on youtube because I couldn't make my mind. The art is fine but the boss mechanics were too simple and uninteresting so I decided to not buy it for now.
What exactly are the cons in the gameplay of this game? I am playing the new version, I'm 4 hours in and it's just fine, it's not broken, it is fast, responsive. I don't get what you guys are talking about
the controls on launch version were busted as frick, you had more recovery frames on attacks than the attacks themselves had frames, also grabbing onto ledges and ladders was a cointoss if it worked or not
I am playing Touhou Luna Nights now, some boss attacks feel like bullshit. Also the walking animation of the maid looks so autistic I always laugh at it, it's like a kid trying to look cool at school kind of deal
I beat Ender Lilies the other day, best ending too. It's not Hollow Knight, but still pretty enjoyable.
>It's not Hollow Knight
that is a positive.
If you are a contrarian moron.
You're in a Metroidvania thread on Ganker, anon.
>le contrarian
not everyone is going to like your favorite game
>If you have a different opinion from me you're a contrarian! You can't possibly have legitimate reasons to dislike something I liked!
Grow up. Hollowknight was a boring slog and the enemy design is atrocious.
>If you are a contrarian moron.
but I love Hollow Night that is the reason this is a positive.
>Wonder Labyrinth is all about how Deedlit can't get over the death of all her friends.
Recently finished Ender Lilies. Great game, highly recommend, restored my faith in the genre after Hollowknight dashed it.
>restored my faith in the genre after Hollowknight dashed it
I need to get Ender Lilies.
Picked it up again and gonna finish this fricker this time. Last played it about 7 years ago and I got pretty far (I think) before I got hopelessly lost and couldn't figure out what to do next even with a guide.
I really wish we were in the timeline where bloodstained went with pixel art.
Can't wait for Blasphemous 2, probably my most anticipated game. The first one is 10/10, gameplay, art design, music, story, pure perfection and one of my favorite games. The devs also kept updating it and put in a lot of new content for free. I got it on sale for 7 € and it felt like I stole it. One of the few games that would give me "that" experience, the thing I am looking for in video games.
I am looking forward to play The Last Faith (looks strikingly similar to Blasphemous but in Castlevania skin), Moonscars (it's weird but very interesting overall and good pricetag will convince me), and The Tarnishing of Juxtia, which I'll have to see more of to be convinced.
I am currently playing Death's Gambit and trying to get into Rain World (so far not my game but I am open to it). I am disappointed with Hollow Knight. After it was praised to hell and back, it's just the same boring platforms in different skin, gameplaywise it feels soulless. The art design is very cute though. Grime is also in my backlog, the demo was fun and I will play it eventually.
If anyone is willing to read through my garbage, what would you recommend? I don't like anime or furgay looking games. Something like Blasphemous or Castlevania or even Metroid? Preferably good backgrounds and art design of platforms (pic related) instead of mobile phone game cubes (this is why I am not rushing into Axiom Verge).
>Can't wait for Blasphemous 2
Wait is there a sequel on development?
It was a huge success for them and their publisher (Team 17) too. Sequel is set for 2023 release.
>Sequel is set for 2023 release.
Frick. Yes.
Try infernax and answer my question.
I checked Infernax just yesterday and the bosses seemed to be very lacking, at least mechanically.
Grime is fricking amazing. One of my favorite games ever.
Yeah Grime demo was fun. The first boss was well designed for a first boss and I hope the game is following the pattern of proper design. Without spoiling anything, do the environments change? Is the game long?
The environments change and are all really good. All the bosses are challenging without being punitive and are fun to figure out. Game is about 20 hours long. It's one of my all time favorites.
just wait for the DLC
What's up with that other guy and DLC spam? Is it some meme about Grime?
No clue, I saw some autists asking if the DLC would be free because Grime was apparently too expensive for their broke ass.
The Devs confirmed it will be, however, although I more than believe Grime is worth the full price. Devs are great and they clearly poured their hearts into Grime.
>what would you recommend?
You might want to look into Ghost Song. But don't hold your breath, the game was first announced in 2013 and still didn't release yet.
Seriously what's up with The Last Faith? Literally a recolor, but looked more fun to play
>he's samegayging now
I'll never understand why HK pissed off these autists.
>Oh no, multiple people are calling me out on my bullshit, what the frick do I do to cope!?
>I know! I'll pretend they're all the same person to validate my ridiculous bullshit!
Anon. You're losing your grip on reality to try and negate people for not liking a mediocre game. What the frick are you doing?
Maybe if you keep trying you'll one day convince everyone that it's actually bad and you were right all along!
I mean it's doubtful but hey, you're the schizo with a problem here
Yeah you play the game for it's aesthetics and graphics and that's it
i have not ever said hollow knight was a bad game, i simply stated not everyone is going to like your favorite game
you are imagining people inside your head and are trying to imply others are schizos
>multiple people
Yeah right
>okay i thew out the contrarian card, now it's time to call them a samegay
let me say it again, multiple people can dislike your favorite game
>Blasphemous
I played the demo and found the combat kind of bad. It felt like a watered-down dark souls/demons souls in 2D. Does the combat get better later in the game? It just felt so disappointing
It's genuinely a good game. Just launch it in SFW mode if the exposed breasts upset you.
any recomendation list?
played that lodoss war one a few months ago and was fun
hollow knight was shit
been lazy to play metroid even once
How about taking some pills, schizo
wat
astalon tears of the earth
How can a game be amazing if the gameplay is just "not bad"? It's a rhetoric question, I know what you mean but it's kind of incoherent
>What games do you recommend?
Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom (pic-related)
SteamWorld Dig 2
Bloodstained Ritual of the Night
Ori 1&2
Aggelos
These are among my favorites of the more recent games in the genre that I liked.
>bloodstained
>ori
goddamn according to your taste I should remove Steamworld Dig 2 from my wishlist, huh
Those three series are very different from each other, tbf. SteamWorld basically plays like a Metroid x Boulder Dash mix.
Recommend me games as amazing as Hollow Knight
A pile of shit.
I finished Momodora 4 yesterday. It was a good time all around.
So metroid/v/ania bros, tell me, when is it coming out?
Demo was pretty good. Pity It's aready taken down I didn't have an opportunity to finish it
>What games do you recommend?
Super Metroid
Symphony of the night
>Super Metroid
>Symphony of the night
Never heard of those, senpai. How do they compare to the originator of the genre, Hollow Knight?
they're cheap knockoff solely made to ride of hollow knight's glory
never heard of hollow knight
its some browser shitty game?
it's an MMORPG based on the Hollow Man movie where Kevin Bacon rapes
Super Metroid was ok but it's floaty and I hate those fricking "retro" graphics indie devs love to use. Symphony of the Night was nice but a little short, and I was expecting a fight with Dracula but instead the last boss is some Reggie Belmont or something
Anyone get into Batbarian?
Got it in one of those bundles a while ago
>it is amazing, the gameplay isn't bad
holy wow
Blasphemous is great but it took me awhile to get to that point. The DLC is awesome too, best bossfights in the game.
So like the anti-hollow knight schizo is obvious to everyone else, right?
>thread goes 100ish posts with people talking about all kinds of games including HK
>suddenly out of nowhere the thread is like 75% shitting on it in extremely similar and petty ways
How sad do you have to be?
Take your pills, gramps. There's no "anti-hollow knight schizo". Stop worrying about that and tell the thread what's your favorite metroidvania game
HK is a fine game but the fanboys can't accept any form of criticism against it. As you can see, this manifests as a persecution complex where they think somebody is out to "get" them and ruin HK's reputation.
Even if there's just two of you, it's extremely obnoxious
That's an odd title for a metroidvania, what's it like?
Ender Lilies is really good but never quite hits that "great" level that would cement it as a must-play of the genre. A bit overpriced at $25 but worth picking up if you catch a sale.
Holy shit I tried this game out and it fricking TRASH anon what are you thinking?
>easy as frick bosses
>boring and clunky world design
>music is lauded but gives me a fricking headache because theres not many tracks
>unintuitive gameplay
Ender Lilies is like babies first metroidvania. I cannot, for the life of me, understand why this literal shit has such good reviews, when games like Grime deserve that praise instead but get 8/10 ratings.
What is wrong with this guy?
Why is he samegayging so much?
Typical "everything BAD!" Gankerirgin.
>Calls a shit game shit in a thread about shit game's genre
I literally joined this thread to post this. What kind of crack are you schitzos on? Disgusting.
I agree with everything you said but it's weird you said Ender Lilies when you're clearly talking about Hollow Knight.
it's jarringly easy to sequence break in this game, most AoE attacks go right through walls so you can hit switches behind walls that you're supposed to get to later
after sequence breaking twice during the first hour I just refunded, if the devs are too incompetent to test for shit like that i'm sure the rest of the game can't be that high quality
can we go back to having normal metroidvania and not this souls shit? thank you
>True ending is DLC
Also the challenge music is pretty good
>The DLC is free
True ending is FREE DLC and the game already has 2 endings. Why are you dishonest?
DLC is DLC. Frick any dev that doesn't finish their game and asks us to actually pay for an incomplete product.
FRICK THIS IS WHY I FRICKING HATE THIS DOGSHIT PLACE. YOU GET FREE EXTRA CONTENT THEY DIDN'T HAVE TO MAKE AND YOU COMPLAIN. FRICKING Black person.
DLC is fricking free
S Tier = Symphony of the Night, Aria of Sorrow, Dawn of Sorrow.
A Tier = Portrait of Ruin, Order of Ecclesia, Hollow Knight, Hollow Knight: Silksong, Blasphemous, Blasphemous II, The Last Faith, Ghost Song.
B Tier = Circle of the Moon, Harmony of Dissonance.
HUGE GAP
Absolute dogshit = Shitstained a.k.a Bloodstained.
Shitstained is the most disappointing game I have ever played, thank God I pirated it first to see if it would be good or not. Iga truly dropped the ball, he got millions in crowdfunding yet he only managed to shit out this abomination called Shitstained. Miriam is extremely ugly. The setting is dumb and 100x weaker than Castlevania. The atmosphere is not there. The OST is not memorable like older Castlevania games. The 2.5D artstyle is vomit inducing.
Frick Shitstained and Frick Iga. He should go back on his knees, begging for Konami to work with him and make that Castlevania game he always dreamed about and have that be his last game before he retires, so his legacy ends on a good note, not on this Shitstained abomination.
stale pasta
Based, I can't comprehend how could anyone ever like that hideous 2.5D shit, metroid dread is shit for the same reason.
Mega man 11 is 2.5D and looks and feels pretty much perfect tho, look it up
Harmony of Dissonance is secretly the best Metroid-like Castlevania by far.
Don't know how anyone likes the "grind enemies to get skills as 1% drops" entries.
You can 100% Dawn of Sorrow in 20-30 hours, that is nothing, you zoomers are mentally ill.
how good are the DLCs? not sure if I should replay this or death gambit
there's no reason to (re)play death's gambit
but the game got an update that totally changed the game.
Vanilla was fine..
I played Salt and Sanctuary and had fun, sadly Salt and Sacrifice doesn't run on win 7.
What makes these threads so prone to shitposting and endless negativity? Why do people always have to focus on how much they hate the favorite picks of other anons in the thread, instead of talking about the games they like themselves or asking about the ones they are interested in?
It's legitimately autism
Because they bought the games thinking they will be just as good and then play them and realize it's complete garbage, like 50% of games Ganker recommends. No, I am not projecting, frick you.
Unepic is fun
I played Blasphemous and right after I finished it they made the huge update that made it not shitty.
It was weird to immediately replay it and have a much better time with a more sensible map and better combat.
Yeah it was not much fun at launch. The QOL improvements helped immensely. I chalk it up to inexperienced devs.
>the visuals are insanely gorgeous
>rogue-metroidvania
Your honest thoughts on Rogue legacy 2?
it was fine, difficulty curve was kinda strange but it was enjoyable
it's fun for the first 20 hours, last remaining 20 hours had my enjoyment degrading at a steady pace but to the game's credit i did play it for 2.5 weeks straight
i'm not going to be doing the new game+ shit anywhere near as consistently though
but the best part of the game is when you unlock all the extra difficulty.
It's was ok, a few bosses feel like they didnt even try
NG+ content comes flowing way slowly too, so Im not sure if I'll see the powered up versions
Also the music that plays in the zones can be so inferior to the other track, is ridiculous
So what's the matter if its free? It was DLC.
And we all know the base game 2 endings are bad endings.
so every game that has ever gotten a patch is just simply shit?
Don't lump me with that other guy
Just making the observation that, when it comes down to narrative, leaving things to DLC is not the right thing to do, doubly so if its about the ending of the game
you have redeemed yourself
>Don't lump me with that other guy
Don't know why you're so scared of me, I completely agree with you.
You're so shit that you make everyone second guess themselves
When the frick is La Mulana 2 DLC coming to Switch?
I thought the era of switch port begging was over
I already played the whole game on Switch, I just want the DLC.
I've been playing Lost Ruins lately and it's quite fun.
give it to me straight anon, is it because of the gameplay, the world and the challenge or is it because of underage anime girls that you like it?
The gameplay, the world and the challenge.
I heard bad things about Dangen but I in fact kickstarted this game.
I havent actually played the full release. shit.
I completed it with no problem whatsoever using the heaviest weapons I could find, it's fun
Poasting wishlist:
>Unworthy
>Vigil: The Longest Night
>Ender Lillies
>Grime
Which should I get first
GRIME it's so good, you will thank me later.
just wait for DLC
can you shut the FRICK up
Really loved La mulana 1 + 2. 1's puzzles can be an absolute b***h so I'd recommend looking up a hint guide before getting filtered.
Only look up a guide if you get stuck, getting hints early on kills the purpose.

>Post your top 5 ranking metroidvanias right now
I can't. it change every 5 minutes
Portrait of Ruin
Aria of Sorrow
Symphony of the Night
Lament of Innocence
Vampire Killer (MSX)
>Lament of Innocence
I absolutely loved Curse of darkness, I have to give it a try. Is it better or as good?
Haven't played Curse of Darkness yet, so couldn't tell you if it's better. It is really good though.
>tfw no Abuse sequel
>Blasphemous
What's this about? Do I get to kill christcucks or I have to play as a christcuck?
both
Rightfully points out how shitty the Catholic world view is
Can you please describe what you mean by the Catholic Worldview
see
It pretty clearly points out how the world view of constant sin and the need to atone for said sin is a self-fulfilling cycle of misery that ruins life for everyone.
If your character is slow as molasses in a genre where traversal is 90% of what you do with NO upgrades, your Metroidvania is a dud.
Frick Blasphemous, absolute piece of shit game.
>die
>spend 10 years slowly walking back to where you were
this is a 10/10 on Ganker
That's why Harmony of Dissonance is the best Castlevania also.
shartsouls has been a disaster for vidyakind
Some Anon tipped me about this when I asked for MetVanias in the sale threads, it's free and actually pretty fun! The controls are a bit sluggish but there's lot to do and take in, the story and setting is cute and the puzzles are actually a bit challenging. I'm like ~10h into it and it's sort of a La Mulana a non-autistic person can actually figure out on their own and not have to look up a walkthrough every 10th minute.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/863940/Treasure_Adventure_Game/
Surprised this game hasn't been brought up yet.
If you can get past the angsty teenage story (and maybe art to some extent) it's a pretty good -vania game with emphasis on combat. It's a bit old now, but can be enjoyable nonetheless.
>XP / leveling system
>enemies scale to your level anyways
why even have that system
Was there level scaling? I don't remember, but if there was I didn't notice. The enemies in the early areas were weak, and in the late game areas strong, as it should be. Even if you got there early. Although that would be hard to do, since, to be honest, exploration isn't the strongest suit of this game. But I think it did offer a few different routes.
So what's the actual difference between a metroid-like and a castlevania-like?
Melee weapon - vania.
Gun - metroid.
That's how I see it.
>Metroidvania
why the frick do you zoomers keep using this moronic fricking term? Stop holy shit. Imagine if you were introducing a game like that to a friend who has never heard of either franchise. he’d be like “what, what are you babbling about homosexual”
but what really makes my blood boil is that every single game that describes itself as that never has a single element of castlevania in it. they always mean inspired by, and ONLY by metroid. metroidlikes they should be called at the very least instead.
Its a subgenre now, you ain't changing shit, get over it
Metroidvania is a pretty widely used term these days.
Nobody cares
Actually, they're called Hollow Knight-likes now.
Commit this to your memory, zoomer.
>not Castleroid
GET WITH THE TIMES GRANDPA
My gramps had a bad case of castleroids in his youth. The butthurt was unimaginable.
>Not Vaniamets
I wouldn't have a friend who's never heard of Metroid OR Castlevania
Tressa is so goddamned adorable
testing out webm of this. I shouldn't have been hit so many times but I'm still not used to her sidestep yet
Once again reiterating how goddamned adorable Tressa is
Oh no the webm actually cut off! Damn it, I can't figure this out. Let me at least try putting the second half in.
What the hell are you doing, anon?
VP9 is live. Also crop your shit. Stop using the ages old webm script and download some proper video editing software.
I did check the VP9, I think. I really don't know what I'm doing with webms, I just wanted to capture Tressa's adorableness. I did at least crop it this time.
Blasphemous was my first indie game. I used to dislike them on principle but now...i'm much more open to trying out indies in general. Any one else feel similar?
name 5 good AAA-games from the past 5 years
Yeah. I'm going to keep my opinions to myself there.
is blasphemous aria of the night 7 or has nothing to do with vanias like 90% of metroid"vanias"
Nine Sols demo was pretty cool, will have to wait and see if the release is any good or if it's another F.I.S.T.
play super metroid romhacks
Recommend some good ones? How's the randomizers work?
Hyper Metroid
Super Metroid Reimagined
Eris
VITALITY
Super Metroid Redesign Axiel Edition(must be somewhat autistic to enjoy this one)
or just sort by rating and pick some from here https://metroidconstruction.com/hacks.php
I've only used the online randomizer and personally I find normal to be too easy and hard to be too hard so I dunno, maybe there's a better randomizer out there to try instead.
Good list, I'll look into these. Thanks.
Which randomizer were you using? Was it this one? https://randommetroidsolver.pythonanywhere.com/
Also, adding on to the romhack list, how could you forget Project Base, Ancient Chozo, and Ascent?
I looked and I can't find the randomizer I tried before, but it isn't that one. Is that one good?
>how could you forget Project Base, Ancient Chozo, and Ascent?
truthfully I haven't played Ascent yet, and yeah the other two are good but I was just mentioning stuff that was further from the vanilla game's layout. Probably should have mentioned them though.
these harder captcha are getting real annoying
It's probably the best one out there.
Ah good point, you should get through Ascent it's great.
Yeah I fricking hate it
Death's Gambit: Afterlife is one of the best games I ever played, let alone a Metroidvania.
Something about the mix of world building, art style and music really grabbed me. I also didn't expect it to be as funny as it was.
All the people I saved being killed one by one by a member of my camp was also something I didn't expect
The game is stuttering occasionally for some reason. And it doesn't support PS4 controller unless I make it think it's an xbox controller through steam settings.
does anyone -actually- like having to go back to the same levels multiple times?
yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees?
Depends on if the backtrack gives a worthwhile reward
Blasphemous is the definition of style over substance. Looks great but man the gameplay is no good at all.
Yes, you already said that anon
what metroidvanias are actually similar to castlevanias?
Bloodstained and Valdis story are good examples of Igavanias
>Bloodstained
duh
>Valdis story
I remember trying that and dropping it due to horribly clunky controls on KB, is it any better on controller?
I barely see any discussion of pic related. Is it good?
It's fun, really short, but maybe it's because i just skipped all the talking, and unfortunately too easy, i wouldn't pay full price but i don't regret pirating it.
It has a lot of woke shit throw into the story for muh diversity and has no real place in it. Can be skipped as it only shows up if you're going for 100% iirc. Fun gameplay but short. Pirate it.
>has a lot of woke shit throw into the story for muh diversity and has no real place in it.
Let me guess. Lesbians?
I agree, holy shit out of nowhere the player character starts discussing she's not dating because she's a soldier but she doesn't identify as any gender, while the other characters discuss how they're homosexuals or whatevever. Was this made by californian subhumans?
>Blasphemous
Lads I have the version 2.0.22, pirated it. Is it the latest version?
latest version is 4.0.67
>Iga-vania
Iga never made any castlevania games. SOTN was directed, produced and programmed by Toru Hagihara. It takes 15 seconds to confirm this if you have an internet connection.
The only game Iga made was "elder gate" on the ps1 and nobody played it.
Start learning who makes the games you play.
Bloodstained, Dread, and Blasphemous are way better than Hollow Knight. Why is Hollow Knight so BORING?
I'll give you Bloodstained but Blasphemous is just not very good. I would be nicer to it if there weren't tons of examples of how to do the genre already. The worst part are the bosses, literally 0 challenge from all of them except Isidora who is more of just a damage sponge especially if you fight her too early
Hollow knight would be better if the combat felt more cuhrazy. Needs to have more combos than swing left and then swing right
Gato Roboto is a fun two hours
I'm trying to create 2d art right now. How the frick do some of them manage to look so fricking good?
learn to draw first
I'm coming from traditional art and know how to paint. It's a different approach.
First, you have to read The Monk lil homie.
