That defense is his team, the sentry gun should be in a place where his teammates can pressure out Demos and Soldiers trying to break it. If the Engineer or his team failed in this, there's no reason he should be able to zap all explosives out of existence to protect his sentry singlehandedly.
Guess it's too bad the teams I play with are full of morons who would rather prioritize getting "sick frags" than support their engineer and keep an eye on their buildings.

Surviving afterburn comes in handy. I don't really think any scout melee stands above the rest, but I enjoy sun-on-a-stick's defensive benefits.

basically yeah, and it kind of massively overshadows soldiers other secondary options, at least in pubs. I hardly ever really see shotgun or banner soldiers anymore and it's really boring and gay cause banners are both fun to use and fun to play around, and anything that encourages you to play around your team is cool in my book.

I think you're grasping at straws. I don't think things are better now because the whole Sniper population hasn't realized how powerful the bazaar is. Even if it's true that the bazaar is a straight upgrade to stock (not saying it is or not), it's marginally better. The same people who are annoyed about Sniper are slightly more annoyed, and the people who love Sniper still love him.
If your aim is to make the game worse and people miserable, remove something people love and/or is irreplaceable like the sticky bomb launcher or the stock scattergun. That would piss people off. Two likely best in slot items for top tier classes with australiums are gone.
Here's another item that'd piss people off the most: stock uber. If you remove that, the game sucks because a lot of it hinges on it. Medic pick offs aren't as valuable or fun because offense can't push though defense nearly as effectively anymore and engineer and defense are king.

I miss the Sandman combo. A lot of competitive players and Youtubers kept complaining about how annoying it was despite the fact that was the whole point of the Scout and the fact that 75% of Sandman users miss the ball or would over estimate the stun duration.
Beggar's Bazooka. Unfun to use and unfun to fight against. For the using part, the "hold and release" gimmick is moronic for a FPS, and the rocket spread is so vast its like you're playing an XCOM game. You could be 2 feet away and you'd still miss; the only humor you could possibly get out of it is by intentionally overcooking and suicide-bombing some perma-scoped sniper. For the fighting part, every braindead that uses it (like two people) just spams rockets because the weapon draws ammo from the reserve, meaning they can just keep shooting without reloading.
And what good is a rocket launcher that's ammo starts at/is passively 0???
