Which RTS campaigns would you consider very challenging to the player? My vote goes for pic related and Warcraft 2 expansion.

Earth2150.
Time limit plus resource management which can frick you up if you spend too much in each mission.
Just turtle, keep sending resources and you'll finish the game before the volcanic stage. You don't even have to win a single mission. The time limit isn't a big concern either. UCS can get messy because of NEOs frickery, tho - you might want to skip those missions.
Lost Souls is the one that's bs hard.
How do you get this and the sequel working on modern machines? Played the sequel as a teen, but not the first one, and always wanted to try it. Or is it not really worth the trouble?
Steam version works fine but will required a small fix. And yes it's worth the trouble, Kohan 1 is great.
>Steam version works fine
I've never been able to get it to even boot on steam.
Works on my machine.
I downloaded the old Kohan Warchest which has all the games in it. Then I put in the dll files that were mentioned in the steam discussions to fix the cursor speed that this anon pointed out
games work fine for me. In fact, think I'm going to start another run tonight. I fricking love the kohan games.
shit, linked to the wrong post. First one was supposed to be linked to
After you're done with Cycle of Destruction campaign, I dare you to check out the Armageddon scenario. It's you and 5 allies against one AI but even then all of you get steamrolled hard. It's the only scenario I could never beat.
I just tried it out. Ffs how is the enemy so damn powerful?!
I tried that map about 5 times. I figure it's the same old thing. Enemy AI knows where everyone is at all times. Your allied AI is dumb as dogshit. I'm going to try it one more time on easy, but it's just a matter of bad programming. It's like how the "neutral" enemies never attack your opponent. But conveniently show up when the AI is attacking one of your cities, and is their unofficial ally since they never attack each other. I love the Kohan games. They did so many things right, but the unofficial ally thing really pisses me off.
and by neutral I mean things like wasps, spiders, etc. The neutral cities are just useless. They never upgrade themselves or anything. So they're just fodder at best.
had to give up on ahriman's gift, great game but too tough for me. loved immortal sovereigns and kings of war but this one defeated me
You know the game is hard when there are people on the steam forums asking how to beat the first mission of the shortest campaign.
I did manage to beat Enemy Within and Quest for Darius, but not Ahriman's Gift. The AI is super aggressive and expansionist, I've never seen something like this before.
I struggled with Starcraft 2 Wings of Liberty on Brutal
Age of Mythology on I think Titan difficulty was really hard as well.
Mythology is piss easy even on titan. Way too many exploits that you can just stumble on without even trying. Like I'm sure in the well of urd if you just bait the enemy's away from the door you win. I've defintley won without killing all the guards before. Plus the mongo ai can't deal with walls that have a hole in them. I will give you that the expansion campaign does have a few ballache scenarios like the first one or chad melegius but they're fine once you are familiar with the level.
Except Cerberus I've never beat that level on titan I'm simply too shit.
I don't know how hard it is today but as a kid the Enslavers campaign in Starcraft was pretty tough. I was never able to beat the Torrasque mission, frick that thing
>Original Kohan
Challenging, yet still fair.
>Ahriman's gift
Literally the equivalent of you plunging your fist into a fire-ant nest (especially the snapping-turtle lizardmen campaign).
>Enslavers
Remember when SC had really fun spin-off campaigns? Including the sequel to Enslavers and cool canon-ish scenarios like Deception and such?
I miss those days.
For the lizardman campaign (Enemy Within), what you need to do is put magicians in every company. They will finish off the slaanri before they run away
The moment I get access to the Maelstorm Engines (if I remember their name properly), I keep producing them as much as possible. Their splash damage is a Godsend. Not to mention bonus damage against settlements and other buildings.
I tried to replay KKND2 a couple of years back and got up to like the 2nd or 3rd mission in each faction before giving up. I dunno how I beat this game on the fricking playstation 1 as a kid. Old RTS games a savage.
>Make post
>Forget you made post
>Go to reply to your own post because it mentioned a game you also played
Sometimes the slowness of this board creates struggles for me.
Red Alert 2 mental omega campaign. it might also be the longest one I've ever played
i still have recurring nightmares from the empire earth campaign
Why the frick kohan doesnt work on W10.
6th time doing that armageddon scenario on easy. I think it's all about building forts.
Although I never managed to beat it, I found that starting as the purple player gives you an easier start (your north flank is protected by the water)
I think some of the maps were intended for multiplayer co-op. I tried another map on ahriman's gift, and my team got steamrolled. It was a 4v1, but as usual, I get no heroes, and the AI has a super powerful unit that has 1800hp and can level a single city by itself.
Bonehenge, right? That's the equivalent of Armageddon in AG.
Anyway, years ago I dared anons to beat Armageddon and someone did it. He posted a walkthrough of sorts and I saved it in a thread for future reference.

holy crap. That is autism to the extreme. Which is the only way you could beat that map. I never thought about going full settlers right from the start. I usually only use settlers once I have at least 2 or 3 capable companies for defense.
Holy shit I still remember how much harder this one is than vanilla kohan, I get it that they made it during a different time when they expected everyone who'd play it to already be a pro at the game but still, damn
you should check out the Kingdom Under Fire games. Namely The Crusaders, and Heroes games. Although it's not full on strategy, it's a mix of strategy and hack and slash. They were originally released on the original xbox, but they recently ported them to pc. But I think the versions of the games that they ported were not the xbox ones. I remember those games being tough, but I beat them. The pc releases though, they are on steroids. I had to dig through the steam forums to try and find some ways to cheese some missions. Because some of them were nigh impossible to beat without finding some trick to win.
