SA2 was good without it, however chao garden is the single greatest game mechanic of all time.

SA2 was mediocre. So many great platformers around the time, and the Sonic franchise isn't part of it.
Man the first few seasons of that show sucked. It only started getting good in the latter half when it fleshed out more of the characters.

You know what. I will concede. It shouldn't be mandatory for unlocking all normal gameplay style stages.
It is obviously definitionally required for 100% completion, but no need to piss people off since its a departure from normal gameplay.
