CHARLES MARTINET HAS PASSED

...on the torch of voicing Mario and other characters to a new generation of voice actors. Super Mario Bros. Wonder is apparently going to be the first game where he will not be lending his iconic voice to the famous plumber. Who do you think will be taking up the mantle now, Ganker?

definitely putting my money on a black guy

not to be insensitive but can't they just use AI with all the voice files they have from him? His best work was from N64 anyways

      >A new generation of voice actors
      AI.

The courts just deemed AI as uncopywrightable. No fricking way israelitetendo is gonna use it given how diehard they've been about voiceactors using character voices outside of games.

But will they in ching chong land? How will we compete with games priced at 1/10 of the price of US games?

Do you think the Goosebumps TV show is non copyrighted just because they used the public domain first movement of the Moonlight Sonata in an episode.

All they did was rule AI is public domain. Using something that is public domain doesn't mean the things you create with it are not under copyright, that's the literal point of public domain.

All the ruling means is that the frickhead who was pushing this and all of his little leech friends aren't going to be able to gatekeep using AI shit and forcing you to eternally pay them a license as the "copyright holder" because you used their software or servers at some point in the creation. It was a win for everyone except giant companies hoping to hold all of the shit you create at ransom.

If anything it just means it will return more towards the hobbyist side of things because that's a huge chunk of money anyone working on this was likely hoping to make taken off the table.

That recording of Moonlight Sonata was still under copyright even if it wasn't made 100+ years ago. Music recordings have two factors to them: the actual material, and the performance, called "mechanical" rights. It's why cover songs can make profit, and can't just be claimed by anyone.

Charles Martinet is dead... tired of doing the voice and is moving on to an ambassador role.

They've already confirmed that the replacement actor is credited in Wonder, so that idea's out of the table.

        >"While Charles is not involved in Super Mario Bros. Wonder, we're excited to honor his legacy and contributions, including looking ahead to what he'll be doing as a Mario Ambassador," a Nintendo spokesperson said in a statement to IGN. "Character voice actors will be credited in the game credits, so please wait for the game to be released."

This screams they put him under an NDA, and gave him a fancy title as part of the pay out.

          >they were also offering me things that I sort of called ‘consolation prizes’: They were going to honor me–give me Disney Legends awards, things like that–but that required signing [a nondisclosure agreement], and what they really wanted was for me to frame this as I ‘moved on’ and that I had ‘retired.’

I'd love for this to be on good terms, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was a bit more dour like you mention. Martinet always seemed really off put by the movie to the point where he didn't even bother going to the premiere despite going to the premiere of much smaller roles like the recent Dragon Ball movie he was in.
The whole "Mario ambassador" thing reeks of almost exactly what Kermit's puppeteer says in that video, where they'll keep giving him some cash to do exactly what he has been in order to keep his mouth shut.

I suppose speculating isn't worth much though because what's done is done.

Some AI. It would be a choice. Do it now when Matinet is still alvie, and keep him around as an advertisement at cons. It would look bad on Nintendo if they replace him with an AI voice after his death.

It will probably be Elon. The fricker attaches himself to popular franchises like a leech until they die, and then he moves on to the next one. That, and he has already played Wario, another character voiced by martinet.

We truly live in the worst timeline. I sincerely hope the universe proves me wrong.
