I know christians believe that the mercy that Jesus presents shall wash away those sins but at the same time they say you must be genuinely sorry for your sins by making changes to follow in Christ's footsteps.

I see it like this: God can judge you in heaven, but here on Earth, you follow the rules of men.
By that logic we are destined for hell since we have to follow the rules of men to survive and God will judge us for doing so (one sin is all it takes). I know christians believe that the mercy that Jesus presents shall wash away those sins but at the same time they say you must be genuinely sorry for your sins by making changes to follow in Christ's footsteps.
