Yeah its great, it has some old school flavor with the non portrait character sprites looking on purpose like they are from SMT1 but the gameplay is much improved, Tokyo is confusing on purpose so dont feel bad to look up a guide where kichikoji shunjuku or whatever actually is, no the game doesnt tell you, it expects you to literally live in Tokyo and know or to just wander around a lot which can be annoying, also dont be discouraged by the first dungeon and first boss, the game is easier afterwards.

Starting with later entries almost always results in a skewed perspective on a series. It was excusable decades ago due to various factors but now if someone wants to get into a series there's no reason to avoid starting with the first entry.
This obviously doesn't apply to people that are looking for a good individual game to play and can be ignored if there's no greater interest in a series.

A good reason to avoid starting with the first entry is because there's nothing to be gained by doing that, and it's usually not the best entry. Especially in cases where the later games in the series aren't connected at all.

Also do side quests for money, most of them are short, but fun.
The game gives you an explanation about the setting at the beginning. The only things you should know are:

I recommend avoiding smt IV fans, most of them only played this one game and they think they know everything about the setting. IV is a pretty bad representation of smt, and a pretty bad game in general.

Apocalypse is a thorough improvement on gameplay, though 4 has some better plot twists and world building.
You don't need to finish 4 to start Apocalypse, it takes place as a "what-if" in the middle of what would be the time right before the final dungeons of 4, but everything from the tutorial of Apocalypse onwards is different than what happens in 4.
And since you're not Flynn, it'll explain most of what's going on in the setting already.
