for me the final act of DOS2 was by far the hardest

Arx? Really? Which fight was hard there? By then your builds should be almost finished, dealing thousands of damage per turn and the hardest part is not to step into deathfog. During all my playthroughs, the 2 hardest fights are the first time you fight Alexandar before you leave the first island and the fight at the oil drill platform, mostly because at these stages your builds are still half assed.

Depends. DoS2' combat will always be shit because they turned it into a puzzle game with the whole Health/Armor/mArmor thing to avoid people overcoming it with RPG mechanics. The rest of the game is decent, but like OP said, DOS1 & 2 already had the problem of frontloaded content. You spend 50 hours in act 1 and the other acts will be like 10 hours each.

The combat is only good if you forsake the idea that you have agency or free will in the combat, because every encounter you go into has a fixed way of how you beat it like a puzzle does. You can't have elaborate setups like you could have in BG3 or DOS1, and your build doesn't matter.
