Colonization games

Good colonization games? Tried freecol and it was a bit too simple. I feel like it's too hard to genocide natives in this game. Pizarro btfo'd a multi-million city with 200 men, I don't see why I can't do the same with a village of 100 natives. Also the economic system is clunky and uncomfy, juggling a ship full of rum shouldn't be this stressful.

I just started developing a new multi-player colony game, where players start in civilization and move out into the wilderness. The focus is on forming supply chains and building industries to continue westward expansion. The map will be huge like foxhole, and a dedicated server will keep it running for years before reset. It would take players 2 weeks just to cross the map on foot and they wouldn't make it far if there aren't any supplies around. Towns will take real effort to construct, players will need to hunt or source food from more developed communities. The mayor of any town can hire npcs which will require wages, or they can run facilities themselves. It will not be an RTS but it will be an MMO settler game. Would anybody be interested in that?

Sounds interesting, is something like Openottd journey to west escenario or Victoria2/imperialism2 like?

Sounds interesting, but how would you prevent it from falling into the usual social problems that survival MMOs like that have? Especially since you're talking about persistent server with no reset to keep things fresh/level the playing field

sweet. i really hope they make it even better. i had a lot of fun with a playthrough but it got a bit too micromanagement-heavy near the end.

It's probably going to become even more micro-heavy, I use excel files in the late game.

i find the trick is you need to plan like you are actually an administrator.

I make 1 colony in a region a hub city on a coastal river with only urban professionals where i build the building upgrades. The river is so you can upgrade some of the river requirement buildings. Then I make a bunch of smaller towns surrounding it that exploit the land and export there resources to the main city. ie the city will have a big pop and can't feed itself so I will have a few fishing/farming villages that feed the city. Lumber/mine/plantation/ranch villages ect will all ship there resources on small wagons/small coastal boats to the hub that will make products and buildings out of the resources with a large warehouse and then ship the resources from there to europe or another hub city in another region ect with your large ships.

This is on 1 tile radius settings btw, 2 tile settings kind of ruin the game because settlements can get access to everything.

maybe thats why i ruined my game, 2 tile range made every town produce most shit and every turn took 5 mins

there is a notepad in the mod folder that has colony radius settings in it, if you change the 2 to a 1 every game will be 1 tile range. I think some maps don't let you change the settings ingame

I remember playing this mod a long time go, back before you could choose to change the city size settings.

You're definitely right that size 2 cities ruins the game. There's no need to build more than 2 or 3 cities on the coast, like that. Boring.

Europa Universalis 4 has colonialism, some countries get specific bonuses for it like Portugal and Castile. But it's not focussed in colonising, so it's not very in-depth. Can't think of anything off the top of my head while on the shitter except that and Civ 4 Colonisation.

There are loads of games where colonization and pacification of natives is a key mechanic, especially 4X, but specifically the focus on the bigger picture of age of sail colonialism as the primary aspect sounds pretty rare.
AoEIII sort of fits into the theme, having you receive supplies from the home city, exploit natives, loot treasures, or hire criminals and mercenaries, so it might work for you if you just want to roleplay as chad conqueror. The WoL mod for the original version is also worth considering, since it adds a crapload of extra civs and units as well as new mechanics like whipping slaves.

I get my fix by playing civ 5 with only a few AI civilizations on a large map. There's something orgasmic about finding a small unpopulated continent with some roaming barbars, then proceeding to plop down a town on it. Don't really care about natives being a huge part of the gameplay, but cleaning them out is a big plus if they are present.

    >Good colonization games
You've just posted it. FreeCol is peak Col game. Civ4Col has its quirks and requires heavy modding to be even remotely interesting (and those mods are unstable as all frick), while original Col has variety of quirks and overflow errors that also frick shit up. So it's really a choice between Col and FreeCol, and FreeCol has less shit than Col going, despite lower stability.

Free col is annoying as frick how the taxes escalate quickly by chaotic RNG and the only money making option in late game is letting the natives alive and scam trading them.
