True. Considering how ubiquitous Steam is, it could be much, much worse. Imagine if it belonged to EA, Bethesda, Microsoft or some shit, it'd be hell.
Really the main thing is that "digital" media is extremely arbitrarily worse than physical media.

If Steam hadn't stolen their thunder and the bubble hadn't popped, then Microsoft would've likely come out strong during their extinguish phase and leaned more heavily on digital distribution through the Microsoft store.
DRM and ruckus about pirates was getting very heavily out of hand as well before Steam introduced more non-invasive DRM and the notion of "Piracy is a service problem".
Physical media has always mattered less than DRM has, it's just an intermediary before you remaster the game on a hard drive.

This, even with the growing pains Steam had Valve still managed to make it more functional from day 1 than literally any other launcher I've used ever. How Ubisoft, Microsoft, EA and even fricking Epic still can't get their hit function after all of these years and attempts is honestly mind boggling

Physical media for games would have died either way just because games keep growing in size, the dvd was obsolete 15 years ago and even Blu-ray is being pushed to its limits.
The only way to preserve physical media would be through cartridges or USB sticks which would come with a increased price.
A problem of physical media is also that you have to store it somewhere just count your steam library and now imagine that every game is in a case and you have store it somewhere in your house for some people that is simply impossible.
