I think people would have much less problems with movie games in general if they let you interact at all during the cutscenes and influence the outcome rather than just watching while maybe holding forward occasionally. One is taking advantage of the medium to tell a story in a way you couldn't in others and one is literally just a movie and the story would lose nothing by being adapted. Making a story-focused game and primarily telling it through non-interactive cutscenes is like having a movie that dumps paragraphs of text onto you to fill in the gaps.
Most of that game is still gameplay though. In a 80 hour game you picked a particulary story heavy part to cherry pick and show. I love BG3, its one of the best CRGPS ever, you dont have to shit on other things just to prop it up. Only insecure little homosexuals do that kind of thing because they dont think the thing they like can stand on its own merits. You can do better than that anon, focus on the things you like and try to explain why you like them. Even if people dont feel the same way, its ok, everyone has different taste. NTA, but there really isn't much difference. It's why I dislike BG3 and JRPGs equally. Games just aren't a storytelling medium. The player should have control 99% of the time, if not 100%. Compare Xenoblade's special arts and FF7's summons to, oh say, a game like Mario and Luigi, where you have far more input during the game.
Even back in the day people were joking about how you could take a crap in the time it took for knights of the round to finish. Actual PSX magazines joked about it and gave tips on how to avoid using it.
Unlike rolling six times just to miss a melee hit, you're not supposed to use Knights of the Round every fight. It's long because it's rare that you get to use it.

Because Undertale really was ruined got ruined by it's popularity, and it's completely because of the community. Genuinely, nobody you see play it for the first time in the modern day has the same reactions to it that you'd see from people back when it came out. This isn't even an issue with time, it's strictly from people having too much knowledge of the game, be it characters, the pacifism/murder aspects, the meta parts, or even the praise it gets. Especially the praise. Every aspect of it, from the very beginning, is meant to lower your expectations of it so much that when it does something you didn't expect of it, it surprises you and gets you that much more invested. That cannot happen anymore thanks to how much people have sung it's praises. What would normally simply lower your expectations and leave you open-minded is now just a reason for disappointment. God forbid you stream it too, because even with less fans being rabid about how you play the game, you'll still have people trying it, and others desperately vocalising people to "not spoil the next part" which only makes whoever's playing fully aware something is about to happen that'll blow their mind. Once again, this does nothing but overhype the thing you're playing.
tl;dr: Undertale WAS ruined for it's community, and no amount of you having played it before that happened will change that.
The initial popularity of Undertale was the perfect example of a massive flash in the pan too.
when it first dropped? MASSIVE explosion in popularity, like essentially overnight success for Toby. The popularity was also stoked by the fires of there being so much hidden content/meta shit like you said and the fact that a game of well, THAT kind was released during the Tumblr age.
However that was its downfall too. The few lines of dialogue stating that other universes with the same characters exist is what led to the massive AUverse or whatever it was called that went from, "hehe look I drew evil sans" to the massive cesspit that eventually became what the UT fanbase was for a few years.
I'm glad that it's since quieted down and the DR fanbase is much MUCH more chill that the UT was in its initial phases, probably helped by it not being complete yet.

I think people would have much less problems with movie games in general if they let you interact at all during the cutscenes and influence the outcome rather than just watching while maybe holding forward occasionally. One is taking advantage of the medium to tell a story in a way you couldn't in others and one is literally just a movie and the story would lose nothing by being adapted. Making a story-focused game and primarily telling it through non-interactive cutscenes is like having a movie that dumps paragraphs of text onto you to fill in the gaps.
BG3 is a real vidya and a real RPG. Unlike the majority of J"""""RPG""""" movies that are shilled on this board.
Most of that game is still gameplay though. In a 80 hour game you picked a particulary story heavy part to cherry pick and show. NTA, but there really isn't much difference. It's why I dislike BG3 and JRPGs equally. Games just aren't a storytelling medium. The player should have control 99% of the time, if not 100%. Because Undertale really was ruined got ruined by it's popularity, and it's completely because of the community. Genuinely, nobody you see play it for the first time in the modern day has the same reactions to it that you'd see from people back when it came out. This isn't even an issue with time, it's strictly from people having too much knowledge of the game, be it characters, the pacifism/murder aspects, the meta parts, or even the praise it gets. Especially the praise. Every aspect of it, from the very beginning, is meant to lower your expectations of it so much that when it does something you didn't expect of it, it surprises you and gets you that much more invested. That cannot happen anymore thanks to how much people have sung it's praises. What would normally simply lower your expectations and leave you open-minded is now just a reason for disappointment. God forbid you stream it too, because even with less fans being rabid about how you play the game, you'll still have people trying it, and others desperately vocalising people to "not spoil the next part" which only makes whoever's playing fully aware something is about to happen that'll blow their mind. Once again, this does nothing but overhype the thing you're playing.
tl;dr: Undertale WAS ruined for it's community, and no amount of you having played it before that happened will change that.
The initial popularity of Undertale was the perfect example of a massive flash in the pan too.
when it first dropped? MASSIVE explosion in popularity, like essentially overnight success for Toby. The popularity was also stoked by the fires of there being so much hidden content/meta shit like you said and the fact that a game of well, THAT kind was released during the Tumblr age.
However that was its downfall too. The few lines of dialogue stating that other universes with the same characters exist is what led to the massive AUverse or whatever it was called that went from, "hehe look I drew evil sans" to the massive cesspit that eventually became what the UT fanbase was for a few years.
I'm glad that it's since quieted down and the DR fanbase is much MUCH more chill that the UT was in its initial phases, probably helped by it not being complete yet.
