But honestly replaying Dead Rising 2 this game is a very worthy sequel to the original.

Anon, the game opens with frank taking photos of what seems like a very violent riot in a quiet town, then he gets dropped in the mall and immediately finds people panicking at the hordes of dead people banging on the entrance doors. The fat cop rapes the girls she kidnaps. Adam is the silliest looking boss in the game and he's legitimately insane. You can put frank in a pink dress and have him wear a servbot head, but the game is not comedic in the slightest.
Something about DR1 feels very real, like when you put on silly costumes it never breaks my immersion, it makes me go somewhere between "huh, this makes sense" and "Frank is as insane as the psychos"
Because they play it straight, another good example of this is when the convicts appear, people remember them for their theme song WEEEEEEELLLL and being an amazing pleb filter, but their introduction has them kill an innocent old man by splitting his head open with a bat and nearly running over his wife/daughter as well, if frank wasn't there to stop them those frickers would rape and murder the girl without thinking. And even then, saving the girl is optional because the average player hasn't picked up a gun by that point, and unless you manage to make them crash their car in a tree it's actually pretty hard to kill the gunner first.

It's not a bug, like i said the convicts are a pleb filter, they're there to shit on the average player (if you die you can restart the campaign with your current levels, and now you already know to grab a gun before night falls) and annoy the more experienced one (because they respawn and the survivors are brain dead, and even if you unlock all the shortcuts sometimes you just have to go through the park).
There are lawnmowers near the convicts, you can pick them up and throw them at their jeep and it works pretty well. Hard not to get shot though, having a gun is definitely easier.

The first game’s story was the only one with a mystery worth a shit. Every other game Overtime mode was simply other chapter in the game, 1 managed a final twist.

The second game doesn't really do anything better than DR1. Only memorable characters are a mailman and Jeff Bridges as the final boss. Chuck sucks shit and he was honestly way more interesting as a Psychopath in Off the Record.
The combo weapon system really devalued the appeal of “Use everything as a weapon!”, especially when the materials to make the best combo weapons were right outside the safe house. This got worse in later games, as combo vehicles and suits meant there was little to no reason to use anything else.
Yeah this too. Using a wooden plank or a trashcan as a last resort kinda goes out the window the more they kept the crafting shit in. Really doesn't feel like the character is trying to survive -- like the zombies are just household pests.

Because the only good DR2 is that dlc demo/prologue thing. The main game felt like it didn't have any real ideas outside of combo weapons and lost all the actually dark and emotional bits the first game had. They leaned too hard on killing zombies and humor and the franchise just kept going that way until it died a pathetic and embarrassing death. I mean, DR is still acceptable and the setting is fun, but you can see the first signs of it missing the point.

It’s possible, but you keep all your levels on resetting, so don’t feel too bad about missing some shit on play through 1. There’s also a bunch of different endings so feel free to go after all of them.

I always wanted to escape outside of the map to see what was on the other side. Specially in 2 and OTR. At least in 1 we can see the entire town in the beginning. But we never get to see what is outside Fortune City.

It's less "get as far as you can" and more "do as much as you can in the time you have".
You can chose to completely ignore the story on a playthrough and it still won't be wasted time, as there's a lot of things to do, like save survivors, chase after specific achievements, get photo stickers (1 and OTR only), collect money and unlock combos (2 only), etc
There are multiple endings, so it's worth playing things out to the end. More importantly, things carry over to make the next run easier:

>achievements unlock clothing and weapons in the safe house, so you can focus one run on just killing zombies tediously and get a powerful weapon out of it for your next run
The goal is to aim to know the game enough that you can save every survivor and complete the story in one go

I actually liked 2 way better than 1. 2 was a fine balance between wacky Americana zombie sandbox and serious race against the clock while uncovering a sinister plot. It also had better gameplay overall besides some combo weapons being too powerful. Lastly the characters are more memorable and entertaining while still fitting a zombie apocalypse setting.
I liked OTR more than 2. Chuck is too spacey and overall slower than Frank. Both physically and mentally.
I've played and think I still own otr but don't really remember much about it other then I remember the timer being much less forgiving than DR2 and Chuck being one of the psychos.

I personally always thought it looked fine and finally gave it a shot pretty recently, and it was just alright. Mediocre is the perfect word for it. I hear a fair amount of people saying they loved it, but it's 10 years old now so I kinda just assume they were kids who played it back then, I have a lot of mediocre games from childhood that I liked.
I tried out DR4 too and still haven't finished it, I think I got around halfway through. I should really just finish it but damn it's not good. Been 5 months since I touched it apparently, you're right to steer clear.
Don't do it anon. It's such a downgrade compared to the first two it will only sour your thoughts on the series.
It's not the worst garbage out there, but it's so much worse than 1 and 2. There's really not much in it that salvages the change in aesthetics, story, tone, etc.
Safe rooms also completely break the game. You can avoid them if you want but there's now a few safe rooms in each "district" of the city, and they hold lockers that allow you to endlessly restock with weapons you've already created.
3 is decent but it plays more like a musou than 1 and 2.
It is funny but feels more of a time waster rather than a tense experience like 1.
Time is rarely a problem, the open world map assures you can find anything anywhere, psychos are generally weaker but there are still a few great ones.
It's kind of overhated, but there's also nothing there that needs to be seen either as it misses the point of the series on so many things, resulting in a bland brown display of casualised nothing, not helped by Nick being a boring protagonist and Player 2 Dick being a nobody that the story forgets exists. There's a great character called Gary in it who would have been the superior playable character, but unfortunately his name doesn't end with a k.

2 is playable because it inherited enough working parts from the original Japanese premise for them to still carry the thing. Everything good about it is a Japanese part that the leafs clearly considered non-essential and only reluctantly put in. The parts never really cohere into a working whole like 1. The game looks ugly, the plot is stupid and unfun, it doesn't handle as well to play, it's a very awkward reassembly of what was just about perfect the first time around.
OTR was better because they had some practice behind them, but rather than making a further refined imitation of 1 with 3 they went and decided they knew better.
Combo weapons I dislike because they actually discourage you from looking closely at the environment even more than memorising power-weapon spawns in 1 did. Good combo weapons typically have their parts spawn together in combo rooms. It's not really an organic process like combining things in Zelda TotK, it's just absurd power-weapons with a couple of basic steps. I like that some make you learn where weird items are to use, but in practice all it does is make the spiked bat your default weapon all game.
Time management isn't as fun because the game wasn't built with any real rhyme or reason compared to 1. 1 is built so that you'll be nudged towards finding everything even if it isn't marked. 2 just drops like twice as many people in random places at random times in its giant disgusting sprawl-mall setting with no real payoff or acknowledgement of saving more or less power. 1 was clearly built for arcade style mastery. 2 obviously didn't want to have a timer by comparison. Survivor distribution is a mess. Also I hate the boss fights. hyper-armouring homosexuals and the solution every time is "bring a moronic combo weapon to trivialise them".
I played it with a friend. Only way to have fun. We could just talk shit whenever it had a moronic canadian moment.

Having to constantly worry about giving the Zombrex vaccine to your daughter every 30 minutes really kills the flow of the game. The player has to drop whatever they're doing, then travel all the way back to his stupid daughter, then travel back to what they were doing before all that. Frick off.

I remember being extremely disapointed you couldn't see nude survivor women after beating them in strip poker. They covered themselves up and had a weird blue filter where the private parts would be.

Yup, save kept corrupting on me and back ups didn't work.
That was my experience with OTR as well, controller support was pretty fricked. I don't know if it has improved, but Steam Deck is the only way I was able to play it with a controller. The default control scheme worked perfectly and was easy to customize.

The only issue I had on Deck was audio would occasionally get into a bad state after going in/out of sleep mode too many times, requiring a restart. Otherwise it was a joy to play.

Dead Rising 2 was my first Dead Rising game and it's my favorite one. Has the best looking women in it (like ops pic) and that Asian reporter. Man I love the women of DR2!

DR1 is harder. The time management + item management is more tight if you are trying to rescue everyone + get the good ending. You gotta plan your routes ahead of time, you gotta understand the map, all while juggling the other mechanics. DR2 is just "take it ez n chill". You can breeze through the game and get everything done without worrying too much about anything. There are dozens of powerful weapons everywhere and they are littered all over the map + easy to get. There is food everywhere on the map. Every 10 yards, you'll run into food. There is almost no danger at all.
I like DR2 but it is a baby mode version of DR1. It never felt tense or scary at all. Just a whimsical/silly time with zombies that are 0 threat to you and enemies that are no threat to you (because of the aforementioned health pickups and powerful items scattered literally everywhere).
Dead Rising 1 is more of my favorite games of all time. Dead Rising 2 is a game I had fun playing. That's how they end up for me.

yeah but unless you want to autistically plan out each run, don't bother. the game requiers dedication and attention span. It filtered many on this basis alone.
Ehh... my suggestion for anyone starting Dead Rising 1... just fail for your first play through. Fail the main storyline and just explore the map and have fun. Mess around with the zombies, get a rough idea of where all the stores are, find some of the secrets of the map, like where the powerful items are and level up a bit. The thing is, on your second play through, you get to keep the levels you earned, and the skills + knowledge you gained is also obviously carried over, so you are better equipped. If I remember correctly, I did not go for the main storyline until my third playthrough and my Frank was over level 30 (max is 50 I think)?
One thing you should definitely know about is the secret shortcut. I think it is in one of the bathrooms. Basically there is a vent and you can click on it and it will teleport you to the other side of the mall and you can use it with survivors you are trying to rescue. That shit definitely saved my ass and I think it's missable if you decide to walk past that bathroom and not find it.
I think you have to beat Adam to unlock the bathroom shortcut.

Currently playing DR2 so far and I don't get why everyone is calling it easier. sure A.I is better and you get lots of weapons but I have still yet to find a weapon as good as the double chainsaws from DR1

"Isolated but still somewhat big" locations are the best options for a zombie game but there aren't that many places that fit the category while also having the item variety which dead rising requires.
For example, I like the idea of schools or universities for a zombie setting but they would also be hard to implement in a DR game. Still, I really like this
