I had this problem myself. Try grabbing the latest MagicLib from discord, that seemed to fix it for me. It's not random from what I can tell, but rather it shits itself when trying to spawn a vengeance fleet from executions, which is why it seemed random.

We are getting (presumably) at least two Luddic-related questlines in the next update, and I've no clue what The Usurpers is meant to imply, so probably yeah.
I think the League is stuck in that place where all the individual planets are more interesting than the overarching faction though. Maybe by intention, but it leaves the League itself as a faction so... unremarkable.
I doubt the League will get special variants. Alex seems pretty adamant to keep most "major" factions along tech lines, and I guess he's deadset on the League being hyperfocused on midline ships.

Militarized Subsystems is supposed to make your burn level go up by one (according to the tooltip) but instead it's bringing it down one level for my ships.
You probably have the industrial skill that gives +2 burn to civilian hulls. When you militarize a civvie ship you lose that bonus, so the net is -1.

Do you increase the Player's Max Level possible from the native 15?
I was thinking of raising it to 20 using 'A Level of Confidence', so you can get 5 skills of every type per playthrough. Why shouldn't I race it all the way to 40? Too OP? Or is much harder to get Story Points at higher levels?
I just take all skills from the start and don't bother. Whole system is a hot mess, so the less I interact with it - the better.
The xp curve gets ridiculous at higher levels, if you do raise the max level adjust the curve too

I have it set on a slower scale though, 2 points per level, lvl 20 cap.
I'd say there are 8 mandatory skill points to spend regardless of what exactly you are doing, because benefits are too important.

That way, there's even more incentive for breaking in prisoners and officers besides the monetary wage thing. And public release should really have the 1 day global cooldown so that there's fair pacing, people need to work to get the 3-rape counter up to access the break scene, etc.
I don't think rape should give a significant benefits to the player, it's not that big of a deal.
And officer limit is not here because of the officers, but to represent player's limitation in managing a flotilla.

I like Nexelerin Raids, Mining, Ground Combat and other features because they make the Sector feel much more alive than it really is.
I, however, dislike how Diplomacy and Invasions operate because the first seems too arbitrary and quick, and the second because I feel like Invasions, Orbital Bombardments and similar large-scale warfare should be restricted to trackable Story events and missions in which the player can choose to take part in, so you don't go into Askonia one day and realize that the Diktat was practically wiped months ago.
Any way to disable these?
Just edit the weight requirements in the nex config to those events to a much larger number. I think I have invasions requiring 3x MTTH on my run right now and it seems pretty balanced. Shit happens, but you don't have ADHD invasion bordergore.

30 years to my save and there was never an instance of a faction being wiped out unless it was by me even with monstrous OC donut steel faction like the legio.
The only faction I've ever seen wiped out without my involvement is the Roider Union

One star system faction tend to be the most that got buttfricked with, once one of their planet conquered it would be a constant tug of war until it was decivilized ad infinitum. The most funny thing is probably gundam UC with two hostile faction in one star system.

So I noticed that npc tend to measure strength of the fleet by fleet composition and not by ships dp. For example, pirate with a few colossuses will think himself stronger then a group of military destroyers and attack, only to be stomped.
And I would like to abuse this behavior in my next run. To use a a small number of elite ships to bait my opponents. What ships tend to punch above their weight? Maybe some mod recommendations?
I know about Tempests and phase ships, but I would like something more durable.

I don't mess with gundam, I use arma's mechs. I like the anti ship and close range mechs. Also the frost wanzers in Diable are pretty cool and cost 8 so if you want a cheap deployment on a carrier with a wingsuite they are a good goto.

I don't think it's boosted, but they're your typical mod shitcapital that can beat a paragon in straight fight, though with extra weakness to flanking. Dun scaiths and Hel Scaiths actually make Legio weaker tbh, they're slow and fat and take up a ton of DP that would be more dangerous in a proportionate DP amount of frigate or destroyer Deamons.
Try the Legio Rising HVB if you're up for a troony challenge.

i like to use two afflictors, one for me and the other for a specialized officer. keeps corralling some ships and you can frick their carriers. to deal with phase Black folk you just phase with them and out last them or once the enemy is out of phase, it will give you a window of opportunity(like 2 seconds) to attack them so phase in, get close, and frick them up with your antimatter blasters. Hyperions and omens are great for doom Black folk as they have 360 shields and can deal with mines safely but they sometimes drop their shield for whatever reason. Harbingers are the real deadly frickers for both phase and shield tanks. You are going to need to and I recommend to deal with them personally, just stay clear from their weapons and outlast their flux.

It's possible. The entire mod has 500+ lines of interactions in rules.csv. These interactions apply to every female or selected npc.
The hard way to give unique npcs custom dialog would be to copy that 500 line chunk and change whatever you want to suit that npc, then redirect the npc interactions to that chunk. This takes a lot of work and isn't really feasible, since you are basically remaking the mod many times over.
The easier way is to add conditionals for officer name to activate unique interactions for that specific officer. It's a lot less work and is what I plan to use to add bits of unique dialog later.

That's because navy is world in itself, which is drastically different from land based military by how it's structured and run, and therefore by traditions it develops and follows. Especially in case of anglo saxon naval tradition which lies in foundation of whole identity. It is supposed to look completely up its own ass to the point of religiousness to an outsider, however if it was necessary, or possible, to get rid of all that, it would have been done long ago.

If I were to do it, I'd colonize a world in that system and build a high tech starfortress, stick an alpha core on it, then fight them with the star fortress present. It would be a long battle but doable, even with enemy gigahomie fleets AI have a hard time approaching a high tech fortress with teleporting mines and a player ship coming in on the flanks.
This is how I wiped out the UAF Solvernia fleet with something like 1/20th of their DP value without suffering a single loss.
The problem is you're limited to 120 days.

I'm still curating my list so that there are plenty of wars and opportunities to profit off of them, but some of the faction mods just don't play nice with each other (bad weightings in autoresolve calculations, impenatrable fortress-systems, etc.) and ruin the experience.

I'm not sure if this is the right one, but I installed the newest ArmA version and did the "Emergence" start cos that was the only one that even remotely matched what I'd heard about the sleeper start. I got a weird-ass frigate with two giant guns on swivels and a system that charges them; a ship that absolutely was not a Valkazard.
I also spawned inside a huge debris field and right next to a frickhueg remnant station with like six ordos coming out of it right away.

By the way the way the system works is you just let it charge for a while and then turn it off once it's full, and it gives you a massive buff to firerate, speed, etc for a bit. The ship is pecifically designed for skirmishing.

I must admit the Cassowary-class is quite good.
The original ship weakness was to have all big weapons focused forward, few OP for fighters and its built-in missiles have poor maneuver. It's also slow, in exchange it is a damage sponge with a variable shield.
The variant Red-hand variant exchange the meme-missiles for more fighters making it more versatile and more capable of fighting harassing frigates
As long as the enemy can't outmaneuver you it's a great flagship

And don't forget that if you don't do keep pressure on the enemy it will vent all the flux while you reload, making it useless alone.
The Balisong scales real fast with combat skills, it is designed to cater to a specific kind of playstyle. At base stats though it is not worth the price tag at all.

Bullhorn is pretty overpowered tbh, the ballistic gun angle convergence always make it outperform similar cruisers by 2-3x in the average battle, going by reports and starship legends after-actions.
Of course, as a downside it's slow as frick without its system and can be destroyed by decent frigates once it runs out of fuel canisters, but normal battles never get to that point.
I don't know if I just suck at using the Bullhorn but I never got the feel for it.

On Nexelerin, do Factions prioritize retaking previously held markets when sending out invasions?
I think all of that is tuneable. I know invasion and colonization can be weighted down so they don't happen as often in general.
I'm going over the settings and config files in the mod multiple times over, but they don't indicate about the AI's internal logic for determining *which* markets are invaded and which aren't just how often a market is invaded by a faction.
I'm asking specifically not about Counter-Invasions, which are a thing, but how Invasions are determined. Seems random, aside from which factions are at war with who.

Given the number of new modders that tried to make their favorite giant ship as their first mod and quit before releasing anything, I too would strongly suggest making something small first, at least as an exercise to learn the ropes.
Modding this game isn't hard, but it still has a learning curve. Furthermore the amount of work involved to make large ships is considerable, deceptively so. And even then, first attempt are usually unsatisfactory so there's a good chance you'll want to redo your first mod at some point once your skills improved.
Making a quick shitbash of a destroyer and a weapon, then implementing them into the game will massively flatten the initial difficulty cliff, help anticipate future hurdles and tamper expectations.
After that though, get wild! The crazier the better.

Nah frick that, supercapitals are cool. The sense of scale is completely borked in Starsector, and supercaps are the only time you really feel it. Frigates aren't really THAT much smaller than regular capitals at the end of the day, I want my David and Goliath moments as a smaller ship, and vice versa.

The Deluxe Yacht class from Seekers is fricking hilarious I love it. 2 Small universal forward points, 1 omni point for like pd, but its ability lets the little ship time dilate a bit and scoot forward or strafe or whatever. I just started using Nex recently, I have to ask do NPC factions defend themselves with fleets from invasions? I observed Mairaath being attacked by Hegemony invasion fleet but I didn't see any League ships defending the planet at, is this a bug or what?
They do, but the fleets do their own thing and factions in Nex need time to actually make their fleets.

1. They grossly overdo the red-blue sabattier effect / cross lighting
2. Faces are too small and profile shows too much of the upper body, because the mods are consumed mostly by undersexed weeaboos who need to see boobs to engage with any content

From Portr-AI-t Pack mod. Has some very good portraits, but many need a retouch, which I'm currently doing.
I use the young_andrada portrait that was shown in "A True and Accurate History of the Persean Sector" developer blog post. I'm way too addicted to xiv battlegroup and low-tech so that's what I went with.
I also use the power fantasy portrait mod that prevents any npcs from being generated with your selected portrait. (sadly, it's discord only for some reason)

Game is build around combat, all the overworld stuff is just small flavor addition to it.
I'd wish but supplies and fuel are fairly steep even if you built an outpost with me lugging my giant blob because I cannot feel save without 6 capitals and dozen of escort, I have to look for bounties that have close proximity to each other. Plus, the game feels like kind of soulless and I feel like a wagie who quickly resupply and jump off to another bounty posted on the net.

Just scale it down a bit. Make the map a tiny bit smaller, lessen the density. Runs 10x better. you can have tons more than vanilla and still be fine, defaults are just bloated.

gonna be personal preference but looking at vanilla values gives you a better idea.
I scaled the map back to 140k by 90k, halved the constellation count and lowered the cell size to 8, lowered shit like remant counts, taps, gate counts, salvage, legion salvage etc a bit, and toned down the mod faction spawning at the bottom of the settings.

Yep, I was amazed how much of an improvement it was. Like I was saying above, really doesn't take too much to clean it up and the map still feels frickhuge compared to vanilla. Looking at the vanilla values gives the best perspective for changes I think.

Admins/Officers I get, but I find the wages for Crew/Marines to be reasonable.
Its just a weird changeover, early on its a tad too high for me but once you get a colony or a commission then its not even noticed.
I just find it more tedious at the start. A lot of the upkeep of your fleet just feels like busywork in general. Not the end of the world though.
While I enjoying Starship Legends in general, I am noticing some aspects of it I don't like.
One thing is that it's binding you to a single ship, Unless you want to grind reputation all over again.
Another is that traits you get a randomly suggested, so it is kind of gambling what are you getting and lead to long time of rerolling traits. And then, when your ship is perfectly unbalanced, you keep getting suggestions for it.
But there is a mod with similar concept - Exotica Technologies. It also adds random bonuses to ships, but let's you to decide what you do and don't want.
So, how do those two mods compare with each other? Would it be reasonable to replace Legends with Exotica or I miss something important?
No, Exotica is a good relacement for SL. You can also use both together.
Exotica is fricking overpowered though. Infinite reapers, 2x in damage, less weapon ordinance with alpha core; I love it since I can specialized on ships and deal with doom stack fleets.

Yes, but it's randomize I think, they don't make killer ships like a player. Full metal Salvo with antimatter is deadly. Radiant with 5 plasma, deadly. Seen some ships have like 4-5 exotic tech.

That's kind of the point, make ships less of a trow-away thing once you get the next shiny new one. You can however skip the grind: just give it to an officer to work their way through the early rep levels. You will miss out on the crew confidence but that's an issue that is quickly resolved in a few battles.

Luds get irrate and go crusade because of local conditions (ai cores etc, sleeper cell smashed by operative) so the scavengers use my station as a weapon like you would vs pirates normally
ludds don't get mad at me even though my station was used, if i try to fight they just back out.

I have a wing of drones, automated ships skill, a few cores in my cargo — and I still can't install this mod. I click on it and nothing happens, everything stays the same, no hullmod error.

The ship must be tagged as "Strikecraft" (will be a hullmod on the ship) or a carrier class ship (open hangars). May have to have wingsuite on that ship too but it doesn't say that there so not sure. I don't use AI cores for officers, apologies.
Automated ships skill isn't necessary. I've had luck using vanilla ships like the condor and drover with remnant fighters and wasps and VIC drones and shit. With some modded ships that have predetermined drone wings, I don't even get the option sometimes.

If it's anything like FTL modding, you just put the files in the same configuration as the mod before it. For example, most FTL mods require them to be sent to a zipped folder, or slipstream can't read them.

Reinforce bulkhead, did you know the Luddic IED Promethus despite being blown up and stated "not being able to salvage" hull mod was a lie and can be easily remedied with Reinforce bulkhead? With that you got a cheap capital ship that's basically meme the stations battle provided that it doesn't chase after fighters or frigates.

I always put efficiency overhaul on my non-combat ships. Less fuel, less supplies, less crew needed means more money and more fun.
Printing a ship using one of those special blueprints gives it a built-in hullmod that allows you one extra S-mod. As a drawback, it also gets a negative hullmod you need to restore/repair dock in order to get rid of.

yes, it's not useless, just less useful - but it's a fairly expensive mod, so even on a missile-heavy ship it's not at all obvious that it's worth it if you're just running typhoons anyway

an ion cannon or two is a great complement weapon on ships like the champion. obviously not a primary gun, but a very reasonable choice over another PD laser
What do you go with when choosing low tech? Fast, overdriven close combat ships or long range barrage ships?
I choose tanky ships (Centurion and Monitor or its modded equivalent) that can withstand the modded ships (which is usually glass cannon last I checked) so that my cruisers and capitals can do the damage.

Wrong question, it's antimatter or mining blasters.
Mining blasters offer superior FLD, better anti-armor and the flux penalty is negligible as you won't be hanging around to loiter in either case.
If you're going SO use antimatter, you'll be out of ammo by the time the CR penalty kicks in.

Sabots for anti-shield:
They're perma-bugged, their sub-munitions are classed as ballistic projectiles so they can't be affected by PD. It's one of the reasons they are so strong. There's not many PD options that can take them out at 400+

Cruiser/Capitals - Hammers/Reapers

gryphons, dominators, falcon p, atlas2, conquests, apogees and ventures are all decent options if you want some more missiles in your fleet. there's also the astral, legion and mora, but fighters are really worth the effort these days.
basically just load up on decent ships that just happen to have at least 2 medium missile pods, and make sure you have EMR and a missile-spec officer

I like the Logistic and Pirate kitbashes. There's never enough of them.
It makes sense for organized factions to have a limited variety of ship types as they are restricted by their doctrine and capacity to produce competent designs. Meanwhile, your average Spacer will be forced to weld two hulls together to make one functional and flight-capable ship, so a health amount of variety of kitbashes for independents and pirates is always good.

If you colonize and immediately pay like half a million for a defense fleet you can basically let them farm for you.
I killed the station and colonized a system and was fine though. Other than their usual raids they never showed back up.
this is interesting. i requested defense fleets from UAF and Blackrock. they're more than happy to coexist with the remnant fleet and there's nothing i can do to get them to engage the remnant with me.

AI cores farm. Build an Orbital station but not a patrol HQ so they don't accidently destroy the Remnant nexus
patrolling sub-ordos and ordos will come by and blow up your patrols and merchant fleets, causing constant stability and commodity issues that you will need to stem until the colony advances to the point of having multiple defense fleets and a battlestation in orbit
on the flipside, they will probably wipe the floor with any raiding parties and invasion fleets (if you're using nex) that come around granted that they actually make contact
i believe in nex it is possible to get neutral/positive relations with remnants so they stop bugging you and become a pure positive, although i'm not certain on that
depending on the orbital speeds of the station and planet, there will probably be periods of relative low and high amounts of remnant activity as the distance between them waxes and wanes between adjacent like they are in your screenshot to opposite sides of the system
this is all under the assumption that you do not destroy the nexus, if you do you'll just have to mop up a few straggler patrols and the system will be good

neutral relations with remnants is also possible in vanilla, but you have to get a commission with Tri-Tachyon first and not attack any remnant ships while you're still independent.

I wouldn't mind starbases being larger. They are pretty underwhelming to fight against if they don't have any backup, even in the mid-game when you have a decent enough fleet.
Did you seen starbases from mods?
It's almost impossible to fight against those in frigate.
The only Starbase that actually made me retreat was a high tech full on plasma cannon base. The moment I step foot, all my ship got bombarded and had like 75% hard Flux. Never got to see the base.
I wish SS had some mini campaigns, like the tutorial mission, where you are confined to a single system, are given specific ships and have to follow some quest which offers various choices and endings.
Imagine:

AI can haul around massive fleets no problem. This just lets people who like wolfpacks or big trading fleets do that without stupid caps.
4-5 salvage ships that will never enter combat should not count towards fleet cap. Also its 600 dp and you get penalties, which you will hit very quickly if you try to just haul a bunch of capitals around.

More minigames like the dueling one would be interesting. You'd have to make it entertaining and rewarding for the player to play, but not tie it too much to the core gameplay so that it doesn't get in the way.

It doesn't, LE is just badly optimized and the explosions cause 90% of players computers to slow to a crawl. An issue he refuses to address because, although acknowledged, he didn't code it and doesn't know how to fix it. All he knows how to do is play with variables.

The REAL star of the show, however, had to be the Matriarch class Imperium Battlestar, with 6 high level wanzers in the fighter bay, a built-in wanzer servicing gantry, and a wingcom suite. I was b***hslapping doritos and remnants left and right.

Left definitely feels like it falls in line for what you'd normally see as floating space rocks, which looks good if you're a pirate trying to smuggle past the radar.

I pretty much just used the vanilla asteroid textures used during combat and used them to retexture the ship.
The right ship I think is also using vanilla asteroid textures, but the ones from the campaign map or somewhere else.

I have 2 tritons and a matriarch so far fitted with anti ship spriggans and valkan ex's so far. Feeling cute might build a paragon or two. Why? Because frick everything in a nearby area.
My faction fleets use similar and I honestly feel bad for whatever faction decides to attack me eventually.

Thing is, the wave motion gun looks and sounds fantastic. If I was remotely capable of doing so, I'd rip it off and throw it on another, better ship with a battleship layout.
Musashi Manufactorum? It's close enough without the wave motion gun, but you can modify the bow with hidden universal gun or something and slap closest superweapon-thing to it or the wave motion from Imperium.
These things are fairly OP and will buff pirate and independent significantly plus they have lower frontal profile due to their shape. Any ship-maker should do this often honestly than adding moronic faction.

Not really. Most of these ships are highly specialized. Special ability is rather straight-forward. Their weapon costs a lot of flux and the OP kind like Bishamonten is locked behind blueprint. I can beat them with vanilla ship just fine. Although be warned that your plane will be most likely shredded by the PD especially the carrier and kappa.

Do colonies eventually grow to size 7? (I have nex if that matters)
I noticed the % is still growing slowly after one of my colonies capped out but it doesn't show outside of the colony list.
The updated version of Starsector hardcaps growth to around 7 to maybe 8, it's in the settings.
Nex also does so, but I forgot which setting it was.
vanilla colony size is capped to 6, this can be changed in settings.json
I knew you could change it I just didn't know if it slowly would eek up one or two more or something.
Didn't know if nex made it higher or not.
