blah blah blah it's an artifact of how the password system was designed, and just a happy accident.
however the "NARPAS SWORD" is actually "North American Release PASSWORD" and was actually added to the game on purpose.

      >blah blah blah it's an artifact of how the password system was designed, and just a happy accident.
This is not true. Justin Bailey was the boyfriend of one of the developers and they had a nasty falling out. It was initially meant to be an affectionate gesture and retroactively got turned into an accident. I read this in one of the comments on YouTube.

Toru Narihiro is the programmer who converted Metroid from the Famicom Disk System format to a ROM. It's thought that NAR refers to him rather than North American Release. But there's really no way of knowing for sure.

Bailey is slang for swimsweat in the UK, just in swimsuit.

What the FRICK are you talking about?

This is most likely a coincidence.
I go with the theory it is just a random selection of letters that happen to be a working password.
A kid who's actual name is "Justin Bailey" tried his name as a joke to see what would happen or because he didn't understand the password system, it worked, he told the next kid, and it spread. "Justin Bailey" is also a name that is very memorable.

That's one hell of a coincidence.

not hardly, Justin Bailey isn't a real word or noun.

It is. But it's hardly the only one.
There's the ever famous ENGAGE RIDLEY MOTHER FRICKER, which is a valid code but crashes the game due to how ridiculously high the time-played value is set to. Among others.

Can you or anyone else explain the technical details about why it works and what's going on?

There's an old guide that goes into detail about it here: https://games.technoplaza.net/mpg/password.txt

              >The game will not let you pick up the Ice Beam and Wave Beam simultaneously. If you pick up one, the other will deactivate. If you activate both bits yourself, you get a weird cross between the two beams. It doesn't seem to hurt the game.
God, imagine if instead of creating this dumb broken password system they implemented features like beam stacking or a map.

But the game does have beam stacking. It says so right in your quote, even.

I wonder if there are passwords that aren't discovered yet. What if there is a whole new level it takes you to.

A whole new level would've been datamined by now, so I doubt that much.
But the nature of the password system means that there are absolutely passwords that aren't discovered yet.

This, why did it take boomers so long to realize this. They just made up a bunch of fanfic instead. Still that Samus sprite is amazing and I'm glad it's stuck in people's minds, the Japanese probably don't know or give a shit

        >why did it take boomers so long to realize this.
No one actually knew how their games actually worked until relatively recently, and no one at Nintendo was ready to tell you why.

Giving you an answer that isn't a shitpost:
The password system has no actual intentional shit besides "NARPASSWORD", the fact that Justin Bailey produces this shit is a coincidence. It was discovered by some guy who works Nintendo's publishing department, who just typed in names to see if there was a cool effect, and Justin Bailey just happened to produce bathing suit Samus in norfair.
