HL2 felt like a different, unrelated game and I wish it had been. Half-Life is not a series that needed a bigger story (and they never finished it anyway). They were sure proud of their water though. I admit it still looks pretty good.

Half Life 1 was this bottle story of this random guy stuck in this labyrinth desperately trying to escape while the end of the world is going on.
With Half Life 2 you are now this living legend and travling around this larger world part of a whole resistance group. It very much has a diffrent vibe.

There is a whole level titled "Follow Freeman" were resistance members follow you and talk about how you're the greatest guy ever since Jesus.

The vehicle stuff and general physics experiments were incredible (at the time) and completely changed the way I perceived what games could be.
Going back now? No, it doesn't hold up much at all and I fricking loathe when I get to the shitty vehicle stuff because it's just all terrible. But, HL1 also has xen so Idunno, I guess they both have their faults, I think hl1 holds up a lot better just because much more of the game is at least good, HL2 has a lot of highs but a lot of lows.
hl2 was great. No idea why people feel so polarized between the original and sequel. Do we need hl2 to be free on steam so the zoomers can play it too?
in hindsight no. but at the time, I was very impressed with it. it seemed very immersive in a way that felt really new. I still enjoy replaying it, but hl1 easily feels like the better FPS game for a lot of reasons. I wish they hadn't scrapped so many interesting ideas during development of hl2, I think the game probably suffered from them being unwilling to experiment more and have more variety

Like, literally, the first fricking part of the game is a sewer level... yaaaaayyy... everyone's favorite level of any game, right? The fricking SEWER level. And then once you are out of the sewers here is a fricking boat.... ok... this won't last long, right? I'll just ride it for like a minute or two right? WRONG! You are going to be in this boat for about a fricking hour so you better get used to this shit.
So in a way, yes. Yes, it did live up to the original, since they both kinda sucked.
Anyone with a brain just played Halo and had a good fricking time. And I mean it. Valveslop enjoyers were the original redditgays.

HL1 feels more gritty and combat focused. HL2 is subdued, cinematic and revolves more around physics interactions and environmental exploration.
