Arguably the best VR game out there, though the competition isn't exactly difficult to win in that regard, which means VR is still a shitty gimmick. Like another anon stated, it's good that the game has at least set a standard for VR games. Best we can hope for is that other developers try to match it.
The only real reason to get VR is for VR chat and the porn.

It was PCVR's swansong, the era of Quest-like devices is next, like it or not.

VR will always be a meme.
People want convenience above anything else.
That's why Blu-Ray lost to streaming, why people wants their own car instead of taking of taking the bus, etc. etc.
I'm sure we haven't reached the peak 'Pokemon-go-style' stage of VR yet, but it will die off again just like every other fad.

People will either insist this game is the best thing to happen to VR or that every individual element of it was done better by various tech demos without saying what any of them are.

That's extremely indigenous. Arizona Sunshine and Vertigo Remastered both do what Alyx does and don't hold back with VR freedom. Boneworks allows you to be more creative with controls, physics and weapon handling.
HL:Alyx is pretty and its a good babby's first VR game. But H3VR has better guns, it doesn't even attempt at melee, moving around is done better in Blade and Sorcery. Compound has more replay value. It has a better level editor than most VR games but still loses to HL1 and HL2 SDKs, Gmod in VR allows for much more variety.

        >it doesn't even attempt at melee
thank god. I can't be the only one who hates Melee in VR - it feels and looks like shit
The lack of real-world feedback except some rumble kills it

They could still add it in extra options, new game+ or something as a love letter to 'experienced' players. Alyx is sterile, very safe, very boring. It's like TLoU of VR games

One game won't save VR. We need a consistently growing library.
If 5-6 more companies put as much effort into VR content as Oculus, VR would be flourishing.

There are a ton of high quality CR titles out already or in development already.
      >Half Life Alyx
      >Elite Dangerous
      >Star Wars Squadron
      >No Man's Sky VR
      >Myst VR
      >Lone Echo
      >Asgard's Wrath
      >Journey of the Gods
      >The Room VR: A Dark Matter
      >Boneworks
      >DIRT Rally 2
      >Microsoft Flight Simulator
      >The entire nu-HITMAN trilogy
      >Half-Life 1 fan port
      >Quake 1 and 2 fan port
      >Doom 3 fan port
      >Alien Isolation
      >Teris Effect
      >Zone of the Enders 2: Second Runner
      >Skyrim VR
      >Fallout 4 VR
      >Talos Principal VR
      >Resident Evil 4 VR
      >Beat Saber
      >In Death and In Death Unchained
      >Until You Fall
These are just off the top of my head. I could name more high quality yet less meaty games like Fisherman's Tale, Moss, I Expect You To Die etc. But I assume you mean full fledged and reasonably lengthy high quality games.

        >no serious sam VR

Come on dude, how many other VR games let you coop with up to 16 players and support crossplay with non-VR players?

        >Skyrim VR
        >Fallout 4 VR
        >high quality games
At least have some fricking standards man. Beths VR ports are unplayable unless you mod them and even then they're still a buggy mess. You literally have to mod in item interactions because the games themselves don't have it. I'd also never in my right mind call VR ports high quality or must-haves for VR, they're literally just ports and most of them feature basic VR support with little to no VR interactivity.

The point is, they are still lengthy singleplayer VR titles even if you have to mod them to get them up to standard or half way decent. Bethesda did most of the legwork by making the game and content, modders fix the game through proper VR mechanics and implementation.

By that logic, any singleplayer game that vorpx supports classifies as a high quality VR game because they're "lengthy singleplayer VR titles".

              Anonymous

Not really, since vorpx only brings the game into VR but doesn't offer full VR features like motion controls and item interactivity. They have to be played with controller or M+KB.

If they were brought into vorpx and modded to have full functionality like the above, then sure. I would argue they would be full fledged VR titles. But just playing a flat screen game in VR while nothing changes but the perspective isn't really the same.

It sold headsets and served as a great entry point for newcomers. It was definitely successful but if rumors are to believed it wasn't successful enough and valve just went back to their old routine of doing nothing but hardware and steam. It's the best VR game we've gotten so far and it will remain that way for years to come since no one else is willing to put this much money and effort into a still niche market besides zuckbook.

It felt like I was playing a video game from the future, I was completely absorbed by everything about. I cannot wait for the future of VR.

Oculus/Facebook have been making full length games with pretty graphics for years before Valve but Alyx did bring VR into the mainstream light. Only problem is because Valve were focused on comfort, people seem to think Alyx is as far as VR can go in terms of movement and pace.

Crazy because games like Boneworks is right there beside it, showing that you can run, jump and swing just fine in VR.
