ZX are basically their own games. Yes they're canonically tied with Zero, but you don't need to know Zero to enjoy them.
What about the gameplay? Is it still that grinding stuff with the moves and cyber elves?
Grinding was something no one enjoyed and was yanked out by MMZ3. MMZ4 is also far more accessible, as people realized getting A or S ranks on stages to unlock moves was shit.
There's no grinding in ZX or ZX Advent. Cyber Elves don't even exist.
There's also zero difference in picking Vent or Aile in ZX. In Advent there are differences between the characters, such as different intro stages, charge shot being different, and different dialogue.
As the other poster said, they removed that shit later on, but I'd add that you really should not need to grind at all in MMZ1 and 2, or use a single cyber elf (you can save up enough to get a sub tank without grinding at all though)
You don't have grinding but you do have dumb sidequests that really just pad out the game but sometimes have good rewards so you're encouraged to do them (and one sidequest that requires you to do it multiple times for a fricking sub tank)

ZX has no grades
You could do but I'm not sure how much you'd enjoy ZX/Advent if you don't like Zero, given that they play very similarly – other than the (bad) Metroidvania elements and the different armours, it's basically the same thing with much worse level design
You could also try one of the Zero sequels if you just didn't like 1, since it's a little rough and low budget by comparison
ZX and Advent are far different from Zero. They're both 2D megaman platformers yes, but ZX doesn't have things like cyber elves. It's far more streamlined. I mean the difference between MMZ1 and MMZ4 is huge alone.
I still don't know WTF they were thinking. "Hey, let's tie getting your special moves to rank, which can only be done by gunning through the levels and rewarding mastery. This is surely a great idea for people playing the game the first time through." And I say this despite MMZ being my favorite megaman series by a longshot

Damn I liked it a lot as a kid. Replayed endlessly on Hard and while I can barely play through the game now with the casual saves, I really don’t remember having any issues with the level design or progression outside of that map
