The Elden Beast's presence is a lot fricking older than the Shattering, its arrival is possibly concurrent with Metyr's. They're both direct, nigh-deific agents of the Greater Will who operate with no landline connection.

There's no Greater Will. The DLC is all about how fake the narrative is. Marika has "charmed" people into believing there's a Greater Will, analogous to Miquella charming people into believing things about him as a method of control. She was actually just a shaman from a crazy little village who called down a monster by accident. Further reinforced by the scene where you trick Empyrean Grandam into believing you're a God by wearing a lions head. It's all just subverted expectation in a meaningless world full of blind people whom confuse monsters as Gods

I don't know if it's necessary that they get no orders, we only get given information that the Finger Mother receives no more messages. In theory maybe the GW just thinks the Finger Mother is really gross and only wants to talk to the two fingers (but also is getting further away so messages take increasingly long to exchange). It is possible that the fingers are complete frauds with nothing but their original programming to work with though.
I think the fact that the two fingers just lock up like a program that has encountered an exception error when the tree is locked is pretty telling

Although I don't prefer his ending, what he appears to be doing makes a lot of sense. It seems he basically conceptualises the Golden Order as a thing itself, separates it from the greater will, the erd tree and the gods and turns it into a sort of philosophy and religion, put down to word and thinks it's good and that they should worship that.
They did have a connection, and they lost it and went crazy. We already knew that the Greater Will abandoned the Lands Between during the shattering war, so this isn't new information.
We learned nothing important about the main game plot from the DLC.

What's up with the item text quality in the DLC? It seems really low-effort all around. I've even noticed the spirit NPC's who give little tidbits of dialogue are strangely written. Like the one overlooking Bayle's mountain has this weird mangled line with 'crest' and 'zenith' used awkwardly, and the one in the waterfall cave area near the Cerulean coast, has a weird line with about cruising in coffins and velvet slumber or some shit.
If this were the original game, they'd have written that item description it a tortuous archaic manner with convoluted grammar choices.
Instead of:

I think it used to be a part of the Lands Between based on the shape of it and how it fits in the middle of the map. The divine towers around the base game seem to encircle the shadowlands and there's a suppression tower in the shadowlands that has a plaque saying it's the center of the Lands Between. If anything, it's probably just the place that Marika sunk into the ground after getting rid of destined death because it was convenient for establishing her order.
Maybe it's a place she keeps things safe and that's why her son and the village she grew up in are there.

There's an interesting, borderline schizo theory that the player character is an unnamed bastard child of Queen Marika (one of the soulless demigods). In the intro cutscene, when the player is mentioned, you can hear the groans of a Walking Mausoleum and the ringing of its bell. The Walking Mausoleums are living memorials to soulless demigods. The implication here being that the player character is one of the abandoned children of Queen Marika, spurned by grace and had failed to make anything of ourselves in life. When the Tarnished were summoned, we were also roused from death and presented a second chance to make use of ourselves for Queen Marika once again. It makes a lot of sense. From did the same thing in Dark Souls 3 with the Ashen One. Elden Ring is basically Dark Souls 3 2, so the player being an unwanted bastard failure given a chance to try again is fitting.

I get the impression the OG crucible lands between was full of old fashioned monsters (omen, hornsent) and gods (elfenish numen, etc). so in a way it's a mix of real world pagan belief (the horned god pan) and traditional western fantasy (omen sent are sort of orcish strongmen)
The true magic successor of Count Ymir ends up being Thops because his barrier can deflect both sorceries and incantations, including Elden Beast's Elden Stars and Maliketh's Black Blade's Destined Death. The existence of Thops's Barrier invalidates the basis of the Golden Order x Carian alliance, that they could still perform magic without interacting with cosmic forces, because Thop's barrier reveals that all sorcery is just drawing on the power of cosmic entities that are not the Greater Will. Every star in space can be considered a different outer god and together, all these stars belong to the Primeval Current.
Thops's Barrier: The lifelong pursuit of Thops the Bluntstone. Creates a magic forcefield that deflects sorceries and incantations. Hold to continuously create barriers. As for their parentage it might of been with Godfrey on account of Messmer's defect or it could of been later on with Radagon which is more likely because of their red hair. Messmer is aware of the Tarnished as a concept after all.
Godfrey and the Tarnished in general were part of her plot to break the Elden Ring, as a force meant to go out into the world and struggle to become stronger. That required kicking them out and taking the kids.

The order of events is actually pretty clear in broad strokes but we don't have any solid time frame besides George offhandedly mentioning 5000 years during an interview.
Its the details where things get messy and if say the Golden Order was around for a 1000 of those years pre-shattering then you can fit a lot wherever in that time frame

I think Marika needed the Tarnished precisely because they were absent of grace for a long time, so they aren't under her influence and can fully think for themselves.
That still doesn't explain not going after the Player Character. The PC canonically received Grace as one of Marika's Onlyfans.
Many people think that Melina is Marika, so her selecting the Nameless Tarnished would be very much Marika reaching to the player. My current theory is that both Melina and the GEQ are a part of Marika's psyche that rejects the Golden Order and wants to destroy it. Basically they are the opposite to Radagon and Maliketh who are deadset on maintaining the current order of things.
I think the problem is more that the body needs a soul rather than the other way around. You cannot explain much of the human experience, and our conscious thought processes, without assuming that there is something else besides the material body.

Why are wolves associated with Marika and Radagon? Maliketh is Marika's wolf and Radagon gifted a red wolf to Rennala but where do these wolves come from in the first place? I doubt the Elden Beat or the Fingers handed out free wolves to Marika and Radagon to keep.

I'd argue it's because the dragons were collectively butthurt about getting usurped, so they didn't bother getting along with anyone who came after them until Godwyn came around. Really, the dragons seem to be very much up their own asses, since a lot of the dragon religions seem to be primarily focused around turning into a dragon.
