      >I enjoyed both games and also know it can't be seriously discussed here.

They're super boring. Not awful, just not engaging at all. Despite all the fluff and budget they can't make the game entertaining simply because they're terrified about offending anyone. So they have dumb it down so much.

    >Do fans of this series exist?

Realistically no. It's the kind of game clueless normies pick up or have bundled with a console, they play it for like an hour, then forget it exists. The vast majority of game sales are to people who don't actually beat the games. So it's hundreds of thousands of people who barely remember the game and a few actual fans but they're nothing. In contrast, a big game has the same dynamic but there's still a fanatical core of a few million.

btw she has this FAT GIANT HEAD in the sequel, and it doesn't mesh with her body at all which is very thin. You can tell two teams were working on this one for the body the other on the head.

I knew exactly one guy who was into this game. These games feel like you would only like them if you're a snoy who's so defensive about no platform really having true exclusives anymore that you have to latch onto anything you can find to puff up your console.

First one was decent, perfectly pretty tech demo sort of 7 outta 10 type deal. It's playable from beginning to end in about 40 hours, traversal is decently fun, combat is simple but works for the vice they're going for. Second one is just a slog. I keep trying to finish it and get bored after like thirty minutes. It doesn't help that enemy placement and environment design feels dramatically worse than the previous game. Too much is designed around the aesthetic rather than making basically any part of the map into a compelling combat arena. It also looks worse in some spots compared to the first, and the stilted dialogue animations and crappy upgrade system haven't gone anywhere(I personally think the new tech tree is garbage), so it just steadily slides downhill into total mediocrity. Every time I boot up Forbidden West, I look at the big ole map I've barely started to unlock and end up quitting out of annoyance. Aloy's story could have been perfectly wrapped up in the first game, sequel baiting and dragging out the lame plot hook into a long-ass sequel doesn't make me excited to continue her story, it makes me want to quit and play literally anything else.

It's got top tier production values and it's technically polished to a spitshine but its also lacking in any kind of identity. It's the game that would exist in the background of a movie. I honestly think it did a disservice to female representation in gaming by being so painfully generic.

      Anonymous

Kind of hate to say I agree. I feel like making her a lesbian in the DLC for FW just drags it further down into mediocrity by digging for brownie points. I'd kill for a new Western IP with a woman more like Lara Croft or Bayonetta, someone fun and flirtatious who's capable but not just a stock grizzled action girl.

Don't use their framing, since it just reinforces their position that we need more perfect positive female characters. The idea is that media needs to perfect perfect morality since it affects the real world. Which is why you get a bunch of dykes who are perfect who can't do anything wrong.

Should there be female leads? Sure. There's been tons and tons of cool ones. But the feminists immediately discount them if they have ANY kind of titulation "for the male gaze" even if the character is well written. Like Aya Brea was pretty cool in Parasite eve, but some promo art has her bra-less showing some cleavage so I'm sure they'd be mad.

We should have positive female leads, but not perfect ones, I agree. It's the Galbrush Threepwood issue all over again though. I'd love to see a game with a woman lead that's as fricked up as Harry from Disco Elysium.

If the gameplay was actually good or decent at least it would had a small following to begin with. The problem is that besides graphics everything is terrible and the gameplay is painfully mediocre, so there's nothing you can salvage out of it beyobd the pretty visuals.

I liked the first one because I kinda thought they would go with the Witcher route of story telling when they did the next game. Actually got excited when i heard it was coming. Then it turned out to be a good Ubisoft game. Nothing about this one clicked like the first. Aloys movement leaves much to be desired. The weapons were somehow made worse talking specifically about the line traps. Gave us new tribes and towns but I could care about any of them I don't even understand how they function. I tried I really tried to get into the game but it seem like it didn't want me to have fun. Then got to pterodactyl and thought oh yeah time to try some- invisible wall here- invisible wall there. Like it should've been a knock out but they played it safe instead and I got like nothing from the game that I care to remember. Like I beat far zenith then checked out. Honestly the worse thing for me about this is how it wasted my time without even a shred of enjoyment to be had.

Horizon is basically the AAA video game industry's Avatar, to a lesser extent.
It doesn't have an active fandom, very little discourse happens around it, barely anyone who considers video games as a primary hobby regard is as anything especially good or bad beyond maybe the technical capability of the Decima engine.

But millions of people buy it in droves because it's an eyecandy open world game that plays nice enough and looks great on their big 4K TVs.

No see because there's wonder and actual intrigue there. I played this game and genuinely wanted to see how the world works. It felt "real" like new vegas, Witcher 3 and mass effect felt real. By which I mean it stuck to it's internal logic and the world feel cohesive. Like despite not having the movement freedom with climbing or a fast way to traverse the world I actually wanted to run around and see it. Which is makes me wonder what the frick happened with the second one. Oh you got a crab shield now. Can I use it as a paraglider no no really? It's just to break my fall okay... Oh a zip rope can I use it to climb cliffs and combo into a dodge roll to get more distance? No just to climb some towers and ladders and legdes, remove duct covers and crumbling rocks, and get to occasional destructible vantage point okay... Ooh new weapons that that don't leave any lasting impression and they nerfed the old ones too. I just don't understand how a slam dunk wasn't capitalized on.

This series is the textbook definition of visual noise. Where calls the visuals impressive, I think it's an eyesore that only distracts people from realizing that the graphical jump between PS3 to PS4 and less so PS4 to PS5 was not that big.

        Anonymous

I think being graphically impressive and having good art direction are two distinct categories. The former is mainly detail, texture resolution, polycount, etc. The latter is the actual composition. Visual clutter/noise is more to do with art direction.

I don't necessarily love the art direction but the amount of detail is impressive.

When everything looks so high detail, it makes the low detail stuff in the image really stand out. The bindings around the wood and the flat moss really stand out to me not to mention the aggressive LODs. It's definitely nitpicking though.

There are lots of locations recreated from San Francisco and LA in Forbidden West/Burning Shores but you probably wouldn't realize it unless you looked at a side by side video.

I picked up the first game for cheap when it came to Steam. It came with all the DLC and was a decent enough open world title. Its odd the second one hasn't arrived. Its also how striking they ugliered her up in Forbidden West. Aloy was never amazingly beautiful but in Zero Dawn she wasn't quite that bad.

Frick Snoy for not releasing this shit on Steam, but i'm massively more annoyed at the lack of Ghost of Sushi Director's Cut (and that Supaidahman 2 doesn't get a concurrent release after both Spider-Man Remastered and the Spider-Black stand alone expansion both did very wel ).

Oh, it's the cope thread again.
    https://psnprofiles.com/trophies/5879-horizon-zero-dawn
    https://psnprofiles.com/trophies/15451-horizon-forbidden-west
If you move the cursor over the percentages you can see the percentage of people who got a particular trophy, and for both games over 30% of people who ever started the game finished it, which is a perfeclty normal percentage for video games, with about 5% who even got the platinum trophy (in line with other Sony exclusives, much higher than for the average game).
Now let's go over the other copes. I'll focus on Zero Dawn because I haven't looked into Forbidden West and honestly don't care to. I doubt the situation is much different, though:

    >b-but they gave away HZD for free!
They gave it away for free in 2021, when it had already sold 10 million copies
    >b-but the game was included in bundles!
Let's say that a significant percentage of those 10 million copies were part of bundles, and that no one who got it was interested in it: it's fair to assume that most of them started at least once if only to check it out, given that at this point the vast majority of them couldn't have had more than a couple other games for their brand new console.

That's not taking into account the fact there were other bundles with other games they could choose from, and finally I don't know what it's like in other countries, but where I live barring special discounts bundles with a game are more expensive than just the base console, though slightly less expensive than the console + game bought separately. If it's like that elsewhere too then it wasn't given away "for free"

      Anonymous

      >it's fair to assume that most of them started at least once if only to check it out
It's not. It's not like that shit is preinstalled on the consoles it's bundled with, you'd have to actively bother to redeem and download a game you don't give a frick about in an era of PS+ games and rampant f2p.

      >barring special discounts bundles with a game are more expensive than just the base console, though slightly less expensive than the console + game bought separately.
Horizon, as a first party game nobody gave a frick about, was typically a freebie in the cheapest option compared to other bundles with games people would actually spend money on.

        >was typically a freebie in the cheapest option compared to other bundles with games people would actually spend money on.
Source? Even then, am I really supposed to believe a significant portion of those 10 million copies was bought by people who had so little interest in the game they didn't even bother to boot up the game a single time, yet they weren't willing to spend a few more dollars for another game? You're grasping at straws here.

That's the launch bundle for whatever morons actually wanted to buy a PS4 specifically because Horizon was being released, not the bazillion "here's some old first party shit as a pity prize" bundles that came later.

I like it. Robot dinosaurs are cool.
    >But the main character is ugly!
Why the frick are you looking at the main character instead of the ROBOT DINOSAURS?
    >S-snoy!
have a nice day, directionbrain. I haven't given a shit about console brands since my age was in the single digits, and I have no idea why the frick you do. I just play shit.
    >The plot is WOKE!
Wouldn't know. Skipped it to fight more ROBOT DINOSAURS. If I wanted an engaging story in THE CURRENT YEAR I'd read a fricking book from twenty years ago, not play a videogame.
