I think it varies by order, some do have vows of chastity or the like, but it's not explicit for all

Sisters "of battle" probably forgo sex as part of their nunnery, but other sisters might not. There is at least one order who focus on directing noble families, and they might pull a Bene Gesserit and have a sister marry someone to keep him in line and guarantee imperial compliance in the next generation.

      Anonymous

      >Sisters "of battle" probably forgo sex as part of their nunnery

The Commissar Cain series talk about this subject. SoB novices generally have oath of celibacy for the duration of been novices. After becoming a full member new oaths replace the old. At that point it is a matter of which Orders Militant they are part. So do have life long oath of celibacy some do not.

Have said that they can't marry. Just have friends with benefits. Commissar Cain was a friend with benefits to the Canoness that runs the Adepta Sororitas training program at the schola progenium they worked at at the time.

      >There is at least one order who focus on directing noble families, and they might pull a Bene Gesserit

That would be the Orders Famulous. They do not marry per say but they do contract of a similar but not the same nature. IE ending it is not the same as a divorce and the person on the other end may still be married to someone else. Think church managed concubinage. Having said that the the goal of the Orders Famulous are improvement and control of the next generation of nobles. Marriage brokering between noble houses, guardianship of young nobles, or just serving tutors are other activities they take part in.

Cain isn't even reliable in his own memoirs. Nothing out of his mouth should be taken as canon.

          Anonymous

Fair but his take is believable, that it is a matter of which Orders Militant you are talking about because each one is run by a different group. Thus they have different rules.

It is in the army books that each of the Orders Militant are independent of each other save for the office of Abbess of the Adepta Sororitas on Terra.

            Anonymous

but the memoirs are edited by a third party (Amberly Vail), and there are instances where Cain's recollections are pointed out as being incorrect and are corrected. The example I am thinking of is when Cain described some PDF uniforms as being a certain color, and Vail comes in to say "Either Cain is not remembering properly or there was some crazy lighting throwing things off, because those uniforms were, like, bright pink"

so we could infer that most of what is not commented by Vail is factual (to her knowledge)

              Anonymous

Thing is that Amberly Vail DOES give a foot note on this matter and it said that Cain was correct on the matter. She also noted that sister in question was a member of the Order of the Bloody Rose.

At lest that is what I remember on that subject.

        Anonymous

This isn't at all what Cain says. He notes that he's surprised that a retired Sororitas at the schola has somewhat obvious sexual relations with an administratum clerk (she also plays card games with the guys), and then Vail in her footnotes explains that Sororitas aren't required to be celibate, they just usually don't have the time or inclinations to have relationships or even casual flings. Cain himself doesn't bang any sororitas.

According to a random book from BL they take no vow of celibacy, however that's just one BL book inventing canon without precedent. Personally, I like them as nuns, so I think they should have all the logical assumptions we make about nuns.

What's dislikeable about a veteran sister of battle having to handle a gaggle of teenage sororitas all day, and sneaking off with an administratum clerk who she doesn't mind spending quality time with AND can trust him to keep a secret?

Cain isn't even reliable in his own memoirs. Nothing out of his mouth should be taken as canon.

Cain is an honest narrator for the most part, just not completely accurate nor (ever) understanding the whole picture until it's too late. Most of his wilful inaccuracies stem from his characteristic modesty and downplaying what he does, it's not like him to lie about something regarding someone else, especially something like a sister and clerk having sex.

            Anonymous

Because any professional organization worth its salt has anti-fraternization laws, and there's a reason for that. You yourself said they need to keep it secret, meaning you're aware that it's light treason. Which could maybe be excused if it was like, a low level guardsmen and clerk, but from people who have been established as

They are chaste fanatics and not gf material. They will burn you alive, you idiots.

            shows is absolutely moronic.
Because they were established as badass warrior nuns, the most zealous and devoted warriors of the church, who sharpen and master their minds 24/7, not teenage schoolgirls, and one random jackass doesn't get to redefine a faction so casually.
Because that's incredibly sappy, sophomoric writing and character analysis. Who the frick unwinds from the stress of their job with a romantic commitment? That only adds to commitment once you're out of highschool. Or is it purely a sexual thing? That's the same immature logic that insist Space Marines and all-male guardsmen regiments are gay, because how else can people unwind other than sex xD
Because we all know that anyone interested in exploring the sexual aspects of 40k lore isn't doing so out of some great writer's curiosity.
            Need I go on?

              Anonymous

Keeping it secret does not equal anti-fraternization laws. IIRC the sister explains to Cain that there's nothing preventing her from amazon'ing the clerk, she just prefers the privacy.

Yes you need to go on because you're entirely wrong. Eisenhorn features a space marine who was too shy to ask Eisenhorn how the inquisitor killed a chaos space marine. A Deathwatch captain- a 7ft+ genetically engineered monstrosity of such sheer violence and mastery of warfare, too shy to ask a mere human something. Gaunt features a space marine, again one of those posthuman instruments of war beyond comprehension for most, taking his time to help a crippled guardsman shoot.

              >immature logic

              no u

You're the one trying to enforce incredibly shallow interpretations of BL writing. How about Commissar Blenner? A secret coward, an addict (to placebos), and a mess of a man who gets manipulated by corrupt guardsmen, but who ultimately proves his loyalty? He's got vices. So what? The entire ecclesiarchy is rampant with excess. Imperial governors are practically unrestrained in their privilege and indulgence as long as they send tithes in on time and keep the local imperial representatives happy. The high lords of Terra, the penultimate source of authority in the entire Imperium, comes from various lines of families that engage in treachery the likes of which would make the CIA and KGB wet themselves til dehydration set in.

If there's one pervasive theme throughout 40k it's that humans are fallible. The sisters are less fallible than most but they are still human- and in a semi-retiree position of largely no tactical importance, with no senior sister to keep the place regimental, when that particular sister's life is filled with teaching dumb teenagers, and a friendly and discreet administratum clerk just happens to be the right sort of person to spend time with.. you're saying that this is entirely out of line with 40k lore?

Yeah go on, lorelet. Amaze me.

Solid canon is important to gatekeep the IP and protect t it from disinterested parties that want to change it for political reasons (ie troons that want female Marines).
When you let literally anyone create canon you run into the issue of it being malleable to the point of uselessness. Backflipping terminators, marine/Xenos team-ups etc.

A certain amount of flexibility in canon is desirable but we are not far off seeing massive retcons for political purposes. They Sigmar’ed fantasy, don’t think they won’t do it to reboot 40k, introduce female marines and kill off firstborn marines so everyone has to upgrade to Primaris.

      >all the logical assumptions we make
Why do that when you have google? Turns out Catholics have been sending their lesbeans to nunneries since there have been Catholics. It's hilarious how many nuns were gay; there's records since the 5th fricking century, St. Augustine himself chastising them for their gayness. It continues in the written records of a subject that has relatively few written records all the way to present. It was so common for women who enjoyed the company of women to run away to these secret societies away from the bigotry of a man's world that when Vatican II was published in 1965 there was an exodus of nuns from the church into the secular gay scene. It's not that these ex-nuns were hardcore Catholics who loved praying in Latin; Vatican II was about opening up the church and presumed to thrust a lot of these sisters into the general society as nurses or teachers and/or under the direct supervision of priests. Their isolated gay convents were basically gone at that point, so many of them chose to just be gay in the general society, where they could build a coven of sister-wives/enjoyed the lesbian dating scene, and got up to some very Adeptus Sororitas hijinks involving bricks and cops at Stonewall. That generation is all in their 80's and 90's now. One reason modern gay politics is so broken is these highly educated ex-nuns have nothing to do with it anymore; the baton was passed decades ago to thieves, cluster B personality disorders, postmodernist cultists, and bogie failsons. Instead of queer meaning anti-identity politics it is the complete opposite now.

Yes they have sex drives, not like the mechanicus is lobotomizing them or anything. Vows of Celibacy are iffy.

They started out as the Brides of the Emperor with a no boys allowed rule so I'm pretty sure they were "married to God" and did not get dicked.

Then Vandire got to them and made them think HE was the Emperor's stand-in, so he absolutely 100% fricked them. So it's probably just up to what you want your Convent to do. And I doubt it would be the bolter b***hes doing it, more like the nerds or Bene Gesserit ripoffs.

They're vanilla, mostly unaugmented humans so yes obviously, but they're also martial fanatics who specifically seclude themselves for the purpose of training for warfare.
I can't imagine they would have much of a healthy or normal sex life, they'd probably consider anything other than training, praying, and basic physical maintenance like sleeping and eating to be a waste of time.

      >they'd probably consider anything other than training, praying, and basic physical maintenance like sleeping and eating to be a waste of time.
... and any time they consider that they've sinned, they go tell their superior everything immediately and in full. First or uncommon offence means a week's punishment, but otherwise they're out until they redeem themselves. So not only are they fricked off, everyone else in the convent knows it was you who got them fricked off. Good luck with that.

  15. 2 years ago

obviously. they're human. I assume you're more asking whether they're repressing their sex drive, and to what degree they're allowed to, or allow themselves to act on their desires?
since sex isn't really a topic the fluff dwells on much, it's kinda hard to know how the topic is viewed, as it relates to religious morals.
on the one hand, the church doesn't hold physical reality or the human body to be inherently sinful, evil or tainted. in fact, the human form is sacred, so exploring it might be seen as a good thing, and the creation of more humans such explorations often engender is good for the imperium, which always needs more flesh for the meatgrinder.
on the other hand, they do have fairly valid reasons to worry about excess of sensation and depravity, which might encourage them to value restraint in such matters, or even celibacy.
honestly, the ecclesiarchy is big and decentralized enough that both staunchly celibate, and more libertine sisters probably exist.

A sister would never leave active duty and would probably just squat out a baby right onto the planet she was conquering that week. That baby would have a las pistol in it's hand before it would get its mom's teeth.

Well now I need a fanfic of an Ordo Famulous giving a noble boy sex ed. With a repentia or two doing the hands-on work as part of their penance.

Boring answer? Yes. They're still human beings. They haven't had their libido genehanced out of them like those sexless, power armored mutants. Abstinence comes down to the culture of each order. Some allow (or don't disallow) the sisters to have sex lives, others demand they remain "pure". Even in cases of the former the individual sisters may not actively pursue sex as their duties to the emperor are more important to them.

I think the more interesting question is: Do they get raped? Because whether they have sex consensually is less important than whether they can be MADE to have sex.
I mean, this is probably why they don't mention Sisters of Battle having sex at all. Because the fact is, they're baseline women. When they get captured by daemons of Slaanesh or just normal cultists, they're going to get raped repeatedly.
I know that in the 'Cast a Hungry Shadow' novel, we see one Sister of Battle who's been corrupted by a genestealer cult, and made to bear hybrids (she's the protagonist's mother) until her body wears out. The story is about finding a psyker to bear their new Magus.

      >implying that Slaanesh's employees rape women disproportionately
Foul lies and slander. Slaanesh desires everyone to get as much rape as possible. Prepare for the litigation tentacles, heretic, we'll see you in court.

Yesterday I tried to start a thread about psychological profiles with direct references to role playing games, that began with a D&D image. It was deleted.

    Today we have a thread
    > Do the Sororitas have a sex drive?
    It has 80 replies.

Maybe that’s because DnD is as moralistic, uptight and autocratic as the anti-DnD moms used to be in the 80’s, whereas the glorious human flaws and the dystopic future of 40k are actually interesting?

depends on the mechanicus, a lot choose to excise their emotional drives entirely, but some keep them, just with the option of not feeling them when they don't want to

According to the Ciaphas Cain novels, yes.

I'm thinking that while Sororitas are married to the Emperor, propagating humanity is also an important duty. As Imperial Servants their children end up in the Schola Progenium anyway.
