I don't think it's that random. Most of those games used to be pretty popular, and you tend to find more people who pretend they've played the OP games than any other games. It's surprisingly easy to find people who will say that games like Planescape, Cave story, Final Fantasy Tactics or Earthbound are among their favorites, but then won't really talk about the games when you try to have a discussion about them.

This kind of meta-posting is clearly based on shit from Ganker or whatever, but what people don't realize is that video games don't work like that.
You don't get "cool guy points" for liking stuff that's obscure in vidya.
And, so long as you actually play the game, you have just as much claim to it as anyone else who has played it.
My theory is that anime, TV, etc. is at a more advanced stage of creative bankruptcy, and posts like OP are just sour grapes games are better than other media.
