Many mods fix the vanilla experience though. You want your first playthrough to be as good as possible, since it will be your most novel and maybe only playthrough if you have eclectic tastes.
If applicable. Some games can be modded, but I don't, since I prefer the vanilla experience. Some games absolutely require mods to play, but then go on to become very fricking fun.

A couple of years ago, a group of modders combined every level from every STALKER game into one playable freeplay mod where you can dick around as any faction and do stalkan' shit. It's essentially a sandbox, but very modifiable, so over time it's had a bunch of megamods made from it, such as Anomaly.
With this modpack, I went back to basics, and added more stalkan' with less tedious bullshit. Also fixed a bunch of issues and changed some balance things.
