No you need to play the first game. The short summary in DRA2 doesn't cover everything and there are a lot if references you will not understand in the sequel. I don't know why the english community thought it wise to translate SDRA2 first. Even if it's MTL past the first chapter and a bit jank you have to play DRA.

Again the 3rd case is pure filler double murder to pad out the game because we need to end it in 6 cases, again the 5th case is some LE EPIC MIND BENDING TWIST even though it's obvious from the start who is the killer. Again, the 6th case is not an actual case but rather some lore dump/moronic reveal because he cannot write and end an overarching narrative.
Also the fact he pussied out of the original V3 idea of it ACTUALLY being a completely different universe/setting with a prison school for delinquents (you have leftovers of that as Maki is the Ultimate Assassin, Ryoma killed a man, Shuichi is a detective etc.) and instead made it literally a seethe game against the fanbase is moronic.
I liked it overall, but you do not do that when the series haven't even reached it's peak potential. He acts as if he should retire and is tired of Danganronpa when he made only 3 fricking games (not counting spin-offs/anime) and it hasn't even been 7 years total between first and last.
It's always funny seeing newbies play Danganronpa and lose their shit over Chihiro. I expect him to be the next on the femboy/trap chopping block after Bridget and Vivian.

It's really, really bad. Like unbelievable so, and I really want to know what is wrong with the people who said it was anything better than that.
1. The MC is somehow even more annoying than any DR protagonist
2. Every case is largely a new set of characters, so you don't have fun sets of new personalities bouncing off of each other
3. The gimmick is that you are interrogating manifestions of the characters crime (the actual entire trial takes place in this magical realm), rather than the characters themselves, so for entire cases you interact with an average of 2 other characters
4. Allso, all the minigame suck. DR has always had shitty minigames except for nonstop debate, but the replacement for nonstop debate is far, far worse (mostly due to the issues with the characters above)
Basically, they completely misunderstood how important character interactions are for this kind of game. Like imagine phoenix wright except he never gets to say "objection", it's basically that.

Yakuza 0, danganronpa v3, and the first one. The first one was awesome. Whoever wrote V3 should shoot themselves, everyone knows audiences love "it was all a dream/simulation"
