>looks no different than on dolphin
that be $60 please
at least they're adding the 3ds levels. If nothing else this ensures they're not going to be stuck on that version forever.
That's a whale moron.
underrated
Are there ANY dolphin mods that include the 3DS levels?
Not that I'm aware of. That's why this release is good so there exists a definitive version with all the content.
$50 at most
even if you don't emulate it, they sold this on 3ds already...
I pirated the Wii version on my modded Wii
I pirated the 3DS version on my modded 3DS
I will pirate the Switch version on my modded Switch
Cope
nuh uh
Huh the shadows actually look quite nice
more than I was expecting
soul/soul
>BUT WHAT ABOUT EMULATORS? EMULATORS? EMULATORS?
classic
I'd say get it for the normal control scheme instead of waggle, but then you can just emulate that feature out.
Why are we waiting nine goddamn months for a Wii port?
Fricking hell DK bros
I fricking called this. I'm not buying the next console for a new DK game.
I mean I will but I doubt it's even happening any time soon
For some reason Metroid Prime 4 took an entire console lifespan to make
Yeah, they're not doing a new DK game anytime soon and putting this game on the Switch means they can 'fill' that quota and frick off with something else. This franchise is cursed.
>For some reason Metroid Prime 4 took an entire console lifespan to make
development got restarted
Why did it take them so long to port this game to switch?
they needed filler for the last legs of the console.
It only took them six years (from the time between the switch port of Tropical Freeze and now)
Assuming its still Retro, there's also the Metroid Prime remaster
I can't be the only one who hates the 2.5d aesthetic, it just looks so soulless
The shit in the background is fine but I hate hate HATE the plane that's being used as ground, it looks so wack stretched out into the background, metroid dread had it too
I remember when ports were cheaper
is this different from tropical freeze?
It's the prequel, originally a wii game.
Prequel implies Returns came after Tropical Freeze, you mean predecessor.
yeah, sorry.
No Dixie, Cranky or Funky Mode.
It's worse. There's a reason people celebrated how good Tropical Freeze was as it improved just about everything.
Wrong
>It's worse.
ehhhhhhhhhh. it at least avoids sucky water mechanics entirely.
Nah, the first game has better challenge and feels more like a traditional DKC game in terms of setting and environment traversal.
The sequel improved the mechanics and dramatically improved the music, but was much easier and the stage elements were randomly thrown together instead of being relevant to the area.
They're both great but there's a case to be made for the first game being better.
You will NEVER get a new DK game
You WILL buy the remakes endlessly
You WILL eat ze bug
>a decade without DK and this is what we get
atleast show new content like Sonic and Shadow
Somehow, Donkey Kong Country returned.
This is game is fantastic, my only complaint it's that it doesn't look that much better in terms of graphics to justify a Remake, and I've already played this game like 7 times on Wii, 3Ds and Dolphin.
The volcano levels in Returns are the most gorgeous volcano levels I've seen in a game.
Too bad they're the worst levels in the game, with really annoying gimmicks.
>not Donkey Kong Country Returns Returns
Wasted opportunity
my disappointment is immeasurable
the game is fine but everyone and their mother already played it and it doesnt look different from the wii version
I never touched returns or tropical freeze because the idea of a health bar was off putting. How does it stack up against DKC 1, 2, and 3?
They're quite different but Returns is good and
TF is the best in the series
I like Returns more than 1 and 3.
Tropical Freeze is great, Returns is okay. Both quite different from the original trilogy though. Control is a lot more momentum based, and overall the world is less soulful (less Kongs, no Kremlings) but in exchange it does a good job carrying on and improving the standard of levels feeling organic, no floating platforms or any of that bullshit.
Tropical Freeze is probably the best game in the series alongside 2, Returns is on the same level as 1 and way better than 3.
The healt bar is kind of neccesary Returns is actually quite hard on some levels of the last worlds and the special levels are very challenging too, in fact so many people and journos complayed about the difficulty in Returns and Tropical Freeze that's why the ports have easier modes (1 more heart in the 3DS and Switch versions of returns, and the Funky mode in Tropical Freeze)
>TF on switch adds a casual mode
>gets higher scores from critics
What the frick did it mean
>Tropical Freeze is probably the best game in the series alongside 2, Returns is on the same level as 1 and way better than 3.
Wow, you have the most boring normalgay npc taste possible, congrats.
In this case NPCs are right. And it pains me to say that because I love being a smug contrarian shit.
>In this case NPCs are right.
nope
lemme guess, you're a 3gay
>that's why the ports have easier modes
all they needed was to make it more obvious what the items do and the babbies could enjoy the game still.
>How does it stack up against DKC 1, 2, and 3?
nu-dkc is shit
It's better. You're just too old. Tropical Freeze is the best 2D platformer ever made
It's shit
shit taste. theyre both good tho TF is the best in the franchise
I don't think so.
>world 1 vs mostly the entire game
Also level design blows DKC2 out of the water. DKC1 is the best classic DK and both Returns and Freeze are superior to it.
>world 1 vs mostly the entire game
Post more TF worlds anon I'm sure they aren't shit 🙂
The returns games have shitty level design. Everything fricking explodes for no reason and the game is basically trying to turn every level into an auto-scroller.
>Also level design blows DKC2 out of the water.
does reddit really believe this?
DKC 2 is a much, much better game than DKC 1. So much more polished and varied. You can tell they ran out of time for 1 with how they recycled the bosses and the last third of the game is mostly cave levels.
I just didn't find DKC2's levels all that actually fun. They were boring and felt like they dragged on forever. DKC1's faster paced levels are better to me.
They're good in different ways. DKC2's mood and atmosphere were definitely unmatched but TF's level design was great in its complexity and creative and well-integrated gimmicks. It just barely outdoes DKC2 for me.
I always liked the mystery around the crashed planes.
Lost Mangroves is based on the Bermuda Triangle so there you go. They're all based on real locations which is neat
>They're all based on real locations which is neat
Just what I wanted that is so hecking cool!
Yes, I too hate it when people enjoy things. Who hurt you, Anon?
The ugly 3d graphics were based on the Bermuda Triangle!! I love it!
I hope they delete that fricking pig that screams at you if you die too much
What pig? Sorry, I'm not a casual who died often.
Fake fan detected. I replayed the whole game while commuting just to get to those.
Who the frick buys the same game just because it was released on a on a portable?
>buys
Making a lot of assumptions here.
It wasn't that bad. You can roll with the R button which is nice.
I'm autistic about framerates. Can't help it.
NTA but I didn't buy it on 3DS because it was only 30FPS. Guess I'll buy this version
I had already 100% the game on the Wii by the time the 3DS port was released and I didn't even hated the waggle controls like everyone else, I had no reason to buy it again on the 3DS
>Sorry, I'm not a casual who died often.
I barely saw him on the actual platforming levels, but on the rocket barrel levels he would show up almost every time.
Its sad that the only Donkey Kong games on the switch are ports
Even Metroid got a new game
Ultimately, what matters the most is what they do with David Wise's soundtrack.
Let's face it; people love playing games, but what skyrockets a video game into stardom and "masterpiece" reminiscence is a 10/10 musical score. DKC has that, so if they change it... ouch.
David Wise didn't do Returns' soundtrack. It was Kenji Yamamoto (Super Metroid, Metroid Prime). It was fine, but not mindblowing. They are probably reusing it. I doubt they would get Wise to compose a new soundtrack for an HD remake like this.
I didn't watch the "Direct" and I was unaware there was a video game called "Donkey Kong Country Returns" (I thought the OP was making a titular pun about DKC getting remade or something), sorry.
Given your explained truth about how some handheld DS game is getting ported, I understand David Wise was not its composer and care very little for the game. Thank you.
>Has the exclusive stages from the 3DS
I didn't even knew the 3DS had exclusive stages wtf
Yeah, the bonus world was an actual world instead of one level. Retro was impressed with the guys who did the 3ds port so they brought them in to co-develop tropical freeze.
>they brought them in to co-develop tropical freeze
No wonder several of the gimmicks from the 3DS levels were carried over to TF.
At least we got the 3DS levels, so now we have the definitive version of the game.
yep
how many extra levels is that? are they even good levels?
8 extra levels, and yes.
It's a whole-ass new world.
They're on par with the rest of Returns, which is to say a far cry from Tropical Freeze. Returns already has too many levels if you ask me.
what the frick? I don't remember the game being that laggy only when the 3D was turned on in like the more detailked levels, that barely looks playable
That's just the video being trash
That being said, are you ready to pay full price for a 14 year old game?
NTA but I've never played it before so sure. Not like I'm buying it twice.
That's pretty sound logic... if you're a sucker
They did that for the thousand year door and super mario rpg ports.
Those were remakes made from the ground-up. This is a port. Different shit, Anon.
DK bros…I can’t take it anymore.
dont want to hear one fricking peep from any other nintendo series fan after this shit
Donkey Kong Country Returns returns
Why is this getting released for the 3rd time? We're entering Skyrim levels of rereleases.
DK has three hearts in the trailer. Is this the return of the New Funky Mode, or is this just the default from now on?
I want more Kongs....
Donkey Kong will NEVER be this soulful again.
>they're playing a 64 but it's their snes versions
somehow Donkey Kong Country has returned
What? It's made by Disney, now?
I genuinely had a hard time figuring out what the difference was between this and tropical freeze. I hope they at least add some new minigames or smt to it
I was sure the Wii/GC hagi port was going to be Luigi's Mansion 1
But DKCR was my second guess
Somehow, Donkey Kong returned
Is this game good? Never got a wii or 3ds but I loved DKC 1 and 2
Yes, but TF is better. They should give you a discount for getting both.
>Is this game good?
Yes, Returns is better than Tropical Freeze, but you need a refined taste to truly appreciate it.
This was one of the Wii games that I really wanted to get an HD remaster. Along with
Punch Out
Wario Land Shake It
Sin & Punishment
Pandora's Tower
>returns
AGAIN?!
That's why it's called returns, dumbass
Again.
Another DKCR release to signify it's time to softmod my Nintendo console.
Only tangentially related but it’s crazy everyone loved Wonder so much despite it stealing all its best ideas from Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble which morons constantly shit on.
Do people shit on 3? My only complaint was kiddy kong having a stupid design. Also its incredibly hard to follow DKC2 with its overall theme and music.
Why does Nintendo feel the need to slap "HD" on all these re-releases? It's 2024 i'd hope a game that was already re-released on an HD console would be
Its been a trend for quite a while. SUPER, 64, NEW, HD. Its all so tiresome with their naming schemes. New is probably the worst offender though.
It's a shame that they didn't add Dixie, Cranky and Funky from TF as playable characters. The two games play almost identically so it couldn't possibly be that much work.
>2010
>Announce you're reviving one of your biggest IPs
>...by outsourcing it to a contracted developer instead of bringing it in-house for continued development
In "retro"spect this was such a fricking moronic decision and it singlehandedly has created the biggest void in DK content ever in the series history. I'm happy the series is alive but I just wish we could get a new game.
I mean the originals were made by Rare and the reason for all the filler games between 64 and Returns in the first place is because in-house Nintendo had no fricking clue what to do with DK... I dunno, give bongos or something.
I want a new game too, and bring back Kremlings.
They don't have a stake in DKC like Rare did. Rare's DK games have a DNA that Nintendo and even Retro can't replicate or fathom. DK to Nintendo is that big ape throwing barrels at Mario on a construction site, not a big ape and a small monkey fighting crocodile men in a jungle setting. Prime 4 better be fricking worth losing DKC for.
Retro's DKC is sort of a middle ground between Rare's and Jungle Beat. I hope that however makes the next game will keep this tone instead of trying to reinvent the wheel again.
>Jungle Beat
Also known as Nintendo's half-assed take on DKC, no surprise that they have a more direct hand in those two games vs. Rare having full control with the DKC and DKL trilogies.
>During the design phase of Donkey Kong Country 2, Shigeru Miyamoto sent the Rare development team suggestions for logos to be used on Diddy and Dixie Kong’s hats. Rare ended up using none of them.
Jungle Beat is just DK, not Country. It's also an awesome game if you don't go in expecting DKC. Retro definitely borrowed its energy before injecting it into the more moody and atmospheric Rare's DKC.
No, Jungle Beat was supposed to be the big return of Donkey Kong and it was a side-scroller. I played it and it's shallow as shit. The bongos didn't help either. The Wii version flopped harder, which speaks for itself.
The Wii version bastardized what was good about Jungle Beat. They took a rhythm based, score attack game and tried to boil it down into a bog-sytandard platformer.
And doing that really exposed Jungle Beat's flaws. Nothing from that game has been referenced or returned since. I actually like Cactus King's design and wanted him as a fighter in Smash alongside Fredrik and K. Rool.
>Take away the things a game does well.
>"See!? See how flawed it is!?"
I agree. That fish does suck because it can't climb a tree.
Again, it flopped on the Gamecube and flopped harder on the Wii. Even the original wasn't anything to talk about when it finally released, it was shallow and lacked a presence. Having to use the bongos to play the damn game correctly sealed its fate.
Cope zoomer, it was successful enough that the team got promoted to work on Mario Galaxy and the current voice of DK got his start.
>Zoomer
You can stop now. I played it on release and regret buying those stupid bongos just to play it correctly.
>it was successful enough that the team got promoted to work on Mario Galaxy
They were already ready to work on Galaxy but had to finish Jungle Beat first.
>Successful
It got praise, but it wasn't successful. Not bad enough to hurt them but underwhelming enough that they didn't go back to that type of gameplay save for the Wii port and that released with no fanfare.
>they don't make a followup, therefore it failed!
have a nice day moronic zoomer
DK never went away, only Country did, and didn't return until 2010. Jungle Beat was just another weirdo experiment, this time by the 3D Mario team.
>Nothing from that game has been referenced or returned since
Quite a lot did, actually, just not in DKC. But if you play Mario Galaxy you'll see that a lot of designs and ideas were reused.
>But if you play Mario Galaxy you'll see that a lot of designs and ideas were reused.
And that was not lost on me, moreso since I was on the DKVine when JB released. Everything about the enemies screamed Mario or Yoshi/Wario more than DK. I think even Nintendo realized that Jungle Beat wasn't the best direction for DK and decided to make Returns. If only they committed to it fully.
Committed to it fully as in made more new DKC games? Yeah I wish. I still wonder what Retro was working on before they had to come in to save MP4.
It looked like a robot hand when they showed that mural with Reggie on it. Probably an original IP that's probably scrapped. I still think that Prime 4 was announced so hastily because of the backlash that Tropical Freeze DX was going to get and it shows. Dread was more of a priority than Prime 4.
>I still wonder what Retro was working on before they had to come in to save MP4.
MP4 had nothing to do with the game cancellation, the game was already dead by the that time.
It was some huge action adventure game that stared on the Wii U in 2014, was moved to the switch in 2017 and was cancelled in 2018. The game absorbed any ideas that seemed good, and resulted in an unfocused mess on a death march to cancellation. The game refused to die, but also refused to get into a shippable state until Nintendo stepped in, rebooted the game and forced retro to slap one of their IP (we don't know which one). When even that didn't work Nintendo finally had enough and killed the project for good.
After the game was cancelled the plan was to remaster the MP trilogy for the switch, but They had to stop at MP1 because they needed to save MP4 from Bamco.
what a shitshow. Must feel bad for the devs to put in all that work for nothing too.
It seems the devs didn't like the game either.
DYKG said that most Retro ex devs are unwilling to talk about it when asked, and the few that did had nothing positive to say about it.
Wow, that's a shame. Maybe they're better off working on Nintendo IPs then
It's worth noting that the mess started right after Retro asked for and obtained more independence, and Nintendo removed Tanabe, which had been producer for all their games in the previous decade, from the studio.
So after this shitshow Nintendo put them on a leash and gave them to Tanabe again to work on Prime 4, lol
DKC was always handled by external devs.
Donkey Kong Returnal
Everyone is talking about how it's a port, the price, the graphics, I'm just sitting here thinking, please, pleeease let the 3 heart health bar be optional. I don't want this game to be any easier.
You and me both
It was an optional easy mode in 3DS IIRC
They'll just call it hard mode or whatever.
didnt dkcr have a hard mode where you only get one heart
Wish I could have Diddy with 3 hearts and DK with 2.
I would prefer a mode where there is no health bar, 1 hit per Kong, all hearts replaced with coins, DK barrel at the beginning of the level and at every checkpoint, bosses take a couple less hits..
>2025
Holy shit why? It doesn't even look good by switch standards. 3rd release of a game from 2010
>no waggle
>no 30fps like 3ds version
>extra 3ds levels included
this is definitive DKC dong boys
cant wait to play this decades old game again in february 2025.
this game had dogshit controls compared to the og dkc games, wish they changed that at least
Are the 3DS levels worth it? Don't really feel the need to pick it since I stil have the Wii version.
I remember them being good levels, but its only 8 levels. Not worth whatever they will charge for it on its own. If they charged $20 I might pick it up, but they won't.
at best its gonna be 40.
*50
80
So... Prime 4 will release next year, new DK basically confirmed?
The real question is if they’ll remove the King of Kong reference
I didn't watch the direct. Does this shit have online?
What an ugly game
hhehehe I bet the reason it's called Donkey Kong Returns is because it'll have you asking for a refund within 2 hours
DKCR is way better than Tropical Freeze.
Especially with the 14 year old gap between DKC3 and DKCR playing the latter on the Wii in 2010 with motion controls felt good man
Given how long its been since Tropical Freeze, I wouldn't be surprised if this and the other remasters are Retro's way of warming up and getting used to making these games again and not letting their skills atrophy
>Retro's way of warming up and getting used to making these games again and not letting their skills atrophy
What "skills"
>open up DKC_Returns_3DS.workfile
>"Save with compression?"
>Click "No"
>Wow it's HD now
I don't think Retro is working on this remaster. Most likely it's the guys who did the 3DS port.
Monster got bought out and have been doing nothing but racing games since 2016
Retro did Tropical Freeze on Switch IIRC so I could see a small team doing this
>cheap outsourced port
>way to sharpen their skills for a new game
tendies everyone
>the original DKC games were SOOOOOO hard we added a life bar so you can take LOTS of hits before you die
>oh the mine carts? Touch anything at all and it's instant death.
What did Retro mean by this
port
remake
remaster
port
remake
remaster
port
remake
remaster
port

remaster
>Miyamoto still seething about DKC 30 years later
What a bitter old frick.
I havent liked any Donkey Kong games, not even on the SNES. Why do people love them so much? Why do they keep buying em? They are all very inferior platformers.
>don't make more donkey kong games because people just play mobile games instead
>enter the mobile market
>don't make a single DK game but flabours of Mario nobody asked for and generic anime gacha
>flop after flop you leave the mobile market because you realized all your public is withthin the console market without pushing a single IP that died for the mobile one
You guys don’t know the real reason this is being released
>Nintendo World has a DK section
>Based on this game
>Kids have no clue about anything in it because it’s from a Wii game originally
>Kids play this game and suddenly know what everything in the park is and want to visit
everyone could see that you moron, after dk got his push in the movie and in the park it only made sense
You're acting like they starting building the park and then realized that it was based on a Wii game. They probably finished this release awhile ago and have been waiting for the park to catch up
Is this them apologising for not releasing a new DK game for the entire switch lifespan
They may as well not have released anything if this is an apology.
>Somehow Donkey Kong Country Returns
Return to monke
Will it have waggle?
>2025
Holy frick, for a simple remaster? Watching the trailer I expected it to be shadowdropped After the direct like Prime.
they probably just started on it kek. Maybe it was a case of if they don't announce it now then when do they? Can't really announce it with the switch 2 stuff that will take centre stage next direct.
The game is obliviously already done, they announced it now because with the Switch 2 coming out in march 2025 all the attention will be on Switch 2 games by then.
They sat on prime for like a year and a half.
no more wagglan
the game is fixed
What was wrong with the 3ds version? Not sure why this port needed to happen
30fps, graphical downgrade, imput lag.
When I watched the direct I wasnt sure if I wanted to get it for the Switch, since Id like to play through it on the Wii like I did as a kid. I just feel like it was made for Wii hardware, not switch, which would make the game "different" and easier for me, which would take away enjoyment from me. Though if theres extra levels i didnt previously know off included, ill get it on Switch. Maybe I can get my brother to play it with me like when we were kids
thanks for listening to my blog
>dock the switch
>grab the switch motion controllers
there fixed it for you schizo bro
its not the same as holding a wii remote
I hate the art style of nu Kong. We need to go back to grimdark country returns graphics
>grimdark
Yes
>DIDDY-KONG DONT SAY IT
Trve.
This guy gets it. I blame HDR.
What do you do today when you need a reference? You look one up on the internet. What was that digital photo taken with? HDR, to normalize all the contrast and create as much visibility as possible. But back in the SNES days, that wasn't the case. If you wanted a photo reference of something, you'd have to find a real photograph, taken with a traditional, non-digital camera. Those photos have exposure which highlights contrast.
This is why so many older games are higher-contrast compared to modern games, visually. Because the world the artists referenced was high-contrast.
This level was so cash
>Make this sick ass gorgeous ice cave tileset, taking up precious storage space in an already very-heavy game
>Use it for 1 (one) level
If the game had unlimited space, the development probably would've run overtime. It's been speculated that lava, sky, and pirate levels was thought up, but became reserved for 2.
The biggest sin DKC commits is that every level world except Vine Valley has cave levels. Even the factory world has cave levels. So when you reach game's end and get MORE cave levels as the entire theme of the world it just ends things on a sour note.
Frick you Black person now I want to go back and replay the original trilogy
Any chances of Funky mode, or any new characters? (I suppose this game isn't really built around it)
