This isn't new. Even Alan Wake 1 did this with Energizer in 2010 and I'm sure there are older games which did it as well. Movies have been doing it for even longer (of course)

The claim is that the ad was intended for the main menu or something, and accidently triggered in the wrong place.
That part is plausible but I'm not happy with any game displaying an ad for any other game, whether in the main menu or not.
This is the same industry that squeals at consumers telling them to frick off when they raise prices
Epic Ubi, EA. aren't the whole industry. Despite actually making some good games I'm not buying shit from them. I pirate all Ubisoft games, especially ones with a frickton of DLC.

The last several ACs have basically been slightly more intricate mobile games, where you level up your character through tedious grinds (that can of course be sped up by buying bundles with real-world money). Even though Mirage was supposed to be a "return to form" and ditch the shitty RPG treadmill, they still need a way to monetize the game after already getting your money by buying it. Thus, it needs to be online so they can shill ads and harvest your data.
