Turns out taking away solo invasions and spreading players thin across a large open world was a bad idea. Doesn't help that they removed all multiplayer modes except invasions and cut all the covenants, this game needs a DLC real bad.
Everyone says that taking away solo invasions killed activity, but how true actually is this in practice? Co-op parties were basically the only fricking people you paired up with in Dks3 anyway thanks to the matchmaking priority.
Also I seriously hope this patch means that multiplayer items basically cover the entire region you're in, that alone would be a serious boon towards the game's activity and really should have just been how they work from the start.
I have 1600 hundred hours in DS3 and I invaded solo players all the time, it all depends on where you invade, like in irithyll where people just come out of a bossfight with an ember. Around 40% of all my invasions at sl60 was solo players that went on to summon phantoms and blues AFTER I invaded them. It's a scenario you will never see in Elden Ring.

I was so sure when I came upon a colosseum with an invader outside it that it was going to be an area for dueling. But nope.
Really odd that they would neglect to add a feature that they know would be popular and doesn't intrude on the rest of the game and doesn't require much work.

BHS made things far too easy in PvE.
Azur Comet + infinite FP physick was nerfed because of PvE because there's no way you'll hit anyone with that in PvP.

This is a bad thing no matter how you slice it, it has nothing to do with skill if you invade noobs with overpowered gear that carries you. The line must be drawn here!
Frankly, equipment invasion range limits things a lot, it'd be nice if they refined their scaling and just let you invade people with scaled down stats, buildup, estus and weapons.
Would go a long way towards opening up invasion pools, and also let non autistic people get into pvp a bit easier with their endgame characters after they finish the pve and are looking for something else.
Scaling stats might be problematic, since you could find yourself with insufficient requirements after invading, making your build entirely useless. Scaling only damage, HP and stamina would mean you could still invade with heaviest gear and highest level spells available.
Estus charges are also not easy to scale due to the split allocation, since you could randomly have your 1 FP flask turn into 0 instead of just losing another HP flask.
You're right on some of those, I assume they could just scale the damage, but you're right that you'd still have some utility you wouldn't otherwise, just seems incredibly stupid to limit it the way it's limited now, especially with password phantoms and such being able to totally ignore that via scaling, but invaders can't.
I don't trust From to make another scaling system, downscaled password summons in ER is already broken as hell with no fix in sight. They don't give enough of a shit.
Yeah, that's why I said that they'd have to perfect that, it does offer an alternative to opening up solo invasions though.
Frankly, I'm not sure I can go back to solo invasions, it's already easy enough to kill 2v1s and it's nice to just have more people to kill and a more lopsided playing field, makes it more interesting

The Bloodborne style matchmaking that forces you into fighting groups has given me a taste for blood. It's not enough to just kill the shit out of some clueless newbie anymore, I want to be this fricking serial killer menace that tears down all of the host's allies and watch them despair as they realize they have no hope of surviving and that the crutches they've been using to breeze through the whole game uncontested have been kicked out from under them.
It's such a goddamn special experience watching a player that is super cavalier fighting alongside their buddies suddenly fold and run away pissing themselves when all their friends are dead and knowing that it won't save them, you don't get that fighting solo players.

No matter who you are, you're not gonna beat a group of shitters with overleveled phantoms using the cheesiest shit in the game and exploits to beat an outnumbered player. Even the greats of doing just that like Jeenine have pretty much given up on the elden ring because the pvp system is so shit and they've taken forever to even balance it out.

Getting through the early game and surviving the shitty twinks was part of the trial. It was a good filter for casual homosexuals that didn't belong there.

I do think a limit on equipment isn't that bad but there has to be a better way. At least let us downgrade equipment or something. Nothing felt shittier than going through the game collecting everything on a character you want to play at certain level only to accidentally over level a twinkling titanite weapon that just happens to count as 2x the level of normal weapon absolutely bricking all the work you did.
I was so fricking paranoid about that on elden ring I played through the game on my first playthrough at around soul level 70 and beat melania with my weapons at around +6 because at the time i didnt know how special weapons scaled or how the invasion item levels were gonna be. I wanted to start mid level invading as soon as I finished the game so I had to suffer through that shit.

The absolute best spell in the game is found in limgrave with carian slicer. Comet azur is only a meme you can use for some bosses that stand still for ~20sec (Dragons, Mohg).
Carian slicer is the highest dps a sorcerer can do. It is like a DS3 straight sword.

The Varre change is literally just a move towards preservation once the servers inevitably go down/allowing people without internet or who can't pay for console online subscriptions to not miss out. Elden Ring and DeS are actually the outliers in that they have content absolutely gated behind multiplayer interactions with no workaround.

does the golden effigy get you summoned faster? is there any advantage to using the furled finger instead?
all it does is send your sign to the closest summon pool so you don't have to run there and place it yourself
i'm guessing that the golden effigy will now send your sign to multiple summoning pools based on the patch notes?
effigy is much more efficient if you want random co-op (just make sure to activate the summon pools first) and your sign wont abruptly disappear so you dont have to stress over babysitting it
furled finger still has a purpose but is much more niche, e.g. being summoned by friends in a specific location or if you want to help people fight a boss before the handful of fogs that dont have summon pools

Most likely a corrupt file, check validity of files via steam.
I had it with a specific armor helmet and when I equipped that or summoned a player that wore it, the game froze.
It happens to me on ps4 (not the same anon).
Its linked to spinning the camera or doing a bunch of actions like jumping and attacking while the summoning is going on.
I think it freezes because you've moved your x,y,z coords really quickly as its calculating it for the host.
I would do that but it happens to me on ps4

If you don't have an option to "check game for errors" in PS4 then you'll have to try deleting and re-downloading the game.

I've had it happen with no movement too, you can almost feel when its going to happen when you put your sign down sometimes.
I just know it happens MORE when you are moving around actively. It might be timed to the quicksaving icon flashing in the upper right as well.
Its the only bug that annoys me. Strangely, the ps4 never blue screens when it happens, I have to close the game manually with the ps menu, which still works fine.

I'll tell you what's a great sword, the BIG Epee.
They are the 3rd largest type of sword now, almost a dagger when you think of it.
The Iron Greatsword is GOAT but only drops from 3 enemies in the entire fricking game at a 4% droprate, two of which can become permanently lost and there is no convenient farming grace.

It also has more poise damage I think, great to guardbreak bosses and big enemies with just a few uncharged R2s

Arcane is closer to classic Luck than it is a 3rd offensive stat like most people think.
If you are doing bleed do not upgrade your Arcane, its a waste of levels. Just get to the base requirements. Bleed procs are so insane you do not need any additional points in Arcane, they would be spent better elsewhere.
This applies to before the update and after it.

Not at all, that's DS1 has this problem because of how the SL only matchmaking worked and how much upgrades boosted base weapon damage.
In DS1 a weapon gets x5 damage at max level while in DS2, DS3 and ER a weapon gets around x2 to x3 damage at max.
Plus the weapon matchmaking prevents any of that one shot bullshit.
Another blunder in DS1 was 99 softH farming giving players 99 phys def, the equivalent of the Knight Set as base defense when you're naked at SL1.
Tryhard invaders were nigh-invincible while being able to one shot noobs even in the mid-game.

Coliseums are too little too late, the game is flawed from the ground up when it comes to invasions and multiplayer, this is a band aid at best. New story should be neat, if they add pvp continents back through it, with rewards for scoring kills, and/or"defensive summon" areas, that could bring back some more multiplayer life, while giving solo/group players reasons to engage with PVP, other than ego stroking.

It's a very fun asymmetric MP experience when often even the PvE gets involved as the invader is often near death getting chased by a gank.
I've invasions where I was left with zero heals and half HP and I managed to win by running near a mimic, getting him to grab and kill a blue and that refilled 2 estus. Then I managed to recover and beat the host and white phantom.
By comparison, 90% of DS1 invasions devolved into the host running back to the bonfire or some other safe and waiting, never advancing through the PvE like 3 man ganks will often do in DS3.

Magic in PvP isn't supposed to be a guaranteed damage dealer, it's more of a way to force rolls as you combo them with weapon arts and other spells like delayed glintblades.

You're right on both accounts, neither effects it in practice if you just time it like a normal dodgeroll. It still goes farther and has the i-frames to go thru attacks.
You only spam it when first learning how to use it anyway, if you've used it before you only do 1-2 taps and get back to offense or better positioning.
So it's a balanced ash now from the looks of it, requires you to use your brain and know how to properly dodge, instead of being a "i am fricking invincible" panic button.

I 100%'d the game on my first playthrough with a STR/FTH grugbuild and haven't started a second one yet.
What are some fun (i.e., not meta) PvE builds? I definitely want to check out INT in some capacity, and I'm curious what ARC is doing now that it's been fixed.
Str/Int is my favorite, especially with stuff like Carian Grandeur. Arc is also fun even if you don't fall for Bleed memes.
I remember coming across a beefy STR/INT weapon in a mid-to-late game dungeon (Ruins Greatsword, maybe?) and being disappointed that I couldn't use it. I'll save it for a rainy day after I do something other than STR for a second.
I know I said I grug'd out, but I did use the Clawmark Seal for a lot of FTH casting. Black flame shit in particular was my only ranged option for a while before I found (and abused) Swarm of Flies.
Ruins Greatsword is a fantastic weapon, though it's more Strength than Int. Another I would recommend is the Royal Greatsword or the Darkmoon Greatsword, but do remember that the latter is primarily Int.
For spells, I'd recommend Carian Slicer and other fast attacks that can help you against more annoying enemies. It's a bit of a shame that Int doesn't have that many utility abilities.
Is the Ruins Sword weapon skill the one that does a frontal gravity magic cone?
Thanks again! Since DMGS is more INT than STR, I actually might give it a go sooner rather than later. I do want to experiment with a squishy build since I've historically been STR/FTH in Souls games. But INT looks like a lot of fun in ER, and Carian Slicer looks like a quick little b***hslap.

Faith caster is amazing, you get access to every damage type.
Bleeds aren't fixed, double scavs are still far more oppressive than RoB every were, the only issue is that RoB was easy to proc bleed on panic rollers

I don't deny that, then. Eleonora's is good if you want a DEX/Arc weapon that is more honest. The weapon art staggers like hell but you can be hit out of it, unlike some skills that are absolute fondue like the one on Bloody Helice.

my first build was ARC/DEX, which made me feel perpetually cucked whenever a weapon i found didn't have any scaling. now that they're fixed, you do get a selection of interesting weapons you can build around. bleed and poison is fun as well.
i mainly used bleed dual daggers or claws, which looking back maybe wasn't the most effective build, but it's fun.
i'm doing a faith/quality build at the moment but i'm still looking for a good weapon and spell combo. i'm mostly using the claymore/greatlance with black flame blade. flirted with the cleanrot spear and tree lance, but haven't really stuck with anything.

They can invade the scraps easier but hosts are still NOPEing the frick out of invasions. While it's easier for an invader to find a host now, all the invaders will be doing the same thing so they still end up in the same situation where there's too many invaders and not enough hosts.

It is, yeah. The charge attack works wonders against people.
Its skill is a large line of gravity magic, but its charged heavy does the short ranged cone. Really fun weapon all around.

Yep, like the other games its solidified into certain areas and level ranges.

RL80 seems like the best (worst) time you'll have with invasions with +17 weapons.
No 120 has about the same activity, maybe slightly less than 80.
Only under 50 has low activity because in early areas ppl don't summon outside of bosses.
lv 30 has pretty good activity if you don't upgrade your weapon too far

130 is what I'd call the extreme dead end. Most people go to 120~ and stop at 125 as a soft rule. I'm pretty sure at 80 you'll be in the top end sometimes just based on the metrics anyway.
