The show absolutely retconned NV.
That said the show seems to literally have nothing to do with Fallout at all. They very obviously took a script for a new property and retrofitted it to be a Fallout series. The show has precisely none of the major themes of Fallout (and in fact ruins those themes with heavy-handed retcons), none of the factions operate even remotely like they do in the games, it's all just aesthetics and names. Flavoring.
This isn't a Fallout series. It's a Fallout-flavored series.

I don't have a problem with the idea of showing a run-down NCR. I think that could be an interesting idea, and stuff like Fallout 2 and New Vegas have already shown that. But the real issue is that I think the TV show is doing this idea in the shittiest and half-assed way possible. It's not actually going to address California as a setting, at all. It won't talk about The Hub. It won't talk about Vault City. It won't talk about New Reno. It won't talk about tribal or raider cultures. It won't actually talk about *anything* from the games in any type of meaningful way. It's the laziest "lol everything is Fallout 4 now!!!!" weak fart. I cannot consider something this mediocre to be an official continuation of real Fallout. It is fundamentally a bad adaptation and I refuse to accept it.
The factions are all destroyed - not literally, but in the sense that the retcons completely destroy what they were.
If the nukes were set off by Vault-Tec instead of being an unstoppable global conflict where humanity was at its worst:
-The Enclave are not bad guys in any sense and simply are trying to reclaim what Vault-Tec destroyed
-The BoS have absolutely no motivation to hoard technology because people don't need to be protected from themselves, it was all vault-tec's fault
-The NCR aren't trying to bring back a failed concept that led to annihilation, they're just 100% feel-good good guys that also got one city nuked and somehow that wiped out all million of them
At this point you might as well not call it Fallout.
Enclave are still genocidal.
Only because they're the designated bad guys due to FO3.
The retcon breaks every single part of the Fallout universe.
And it's not like it's necessary to paint Vault-Tec as bad, in normal Fallout lore they're monstrous war profiteers organizing elaborate unethical human experimentation. They don't need to be responsible for everything bad to have ever happened.

Only thing I've seen people articulate is NCR and Vegas getting wiped out, but imo thats consistent with the games. A common criticism of Fallout is that the world isn't rebuilt enough given the time that has elapsed. This actually makes sense if every time a faction gets too big they get swatted down again. The reason Vegas is just a couple of shitty hotels is because its been successfully raided several times. Same with NCR. And all other factions.

Who is it consistent according to? It doesn't enhance or expand upon the original setting of Fallout in any way, and actively goes out of the way to ignore every major arc of 1 and 2. I can't even fathom how anyone would call this authentic. And I think that having Fallout references in a Fallout TV show is not completely unreasonable. That should be expected as the norm. Saying that a Fallout TV show shouldn't be about Fallout sounds like a typical alienation technique whenever someone says they dislike a mediocre adaptation. This doesn't feel authentic. It doesn't feel like anybody actually cared about 1 and 2, even in the slightest. I don't get why saying this is supposed to be controversial, at all. It's really self-evident that it's an OC show, and calling any of the decisions consistent is incredibly unconvincing. Maybe this makes sense in your mind, but you're never going to convince me otherwise. Enjoy your show while I play Fallout.

There hasn't been a good Fallout game since 2010. After 14 years of BGS releasing nothing but duds it's clear there will never again be a good Fallout. Why does anyone care about canon at this point? The old games will still be available and it's not like the new canon will ruin any future games which will suck regardless.
