he probably could've pulled off yakuza 0 kiryu, especially if he tried to be more natural instead of putting on the Anime Voice Actor Voice a lot of dubs these days do where they somehow overact and underact at the same time to try and copy the japanese instead of being more natural, but it hits some kind of uncanney valley to hear his voice come out of kiryu

That's because they have a lack of proper education in the arts unlike the Japanese do, the Japanese voice actors practice singing as part of their CV for their jobs.

Saying this as someone who doesn’t hate Yong or anything, he’s one of those guys who has a voice that matches his physique down to a t. He sounds like an itty bitty man pretending to be masculine, no actual 6 foot man sounds like him, definitely not Kiryu. It’s a shame really because Y7’s dub was pretty great, really helps immerse me even more.
The only problem with 7’s dub is they got David Hayter but didn’t make him Adachi
They could've gotten Markiplier for Kiryu's role and it would've been better.

I'm pretty sure they have absolutely no director going on, and likely all of the recordings are being done remotely leading to the VAs having zero idea what is going on except what they can read from the script.
Someone posted a video of a side-story that had a teenage boy sound like a child probably because the dub VA thought the teenager was a child due to the lines.
That doesn't excuse Yong, but lack of direction seems to be an on-going issue in dubs.

You can tell he really doesn't know how to modulare his voice, which means his range is very limited. Nothing wrong with that really, mani VA can make a carrer for themselves by just having "one voice" ,Joe Dimagio for example.
But in the lack of range, he fails to give personality to the voice, he is just deadpanly reading lines while pretending to have a deeper voice and you can just tell it's fake, his acting is not convincing and it takes you out of whatever immersion the game has.
