falcon can't boost as much as golden fox but it still defines it's playstyle. falcon is straight up skyway and power meter management

        Anonymous

Stingray is the king of skyway management, in that you can actually save skyway to make big final lap plays.

      Anonymous

Stingray main here. General play is "get a lead, hold it while minimizing boosts." If you get a good funnel and end up in front, stay in there. If you don't, play in the pack—you have above average durability—and try to get as early a skyway as possible. If you're around the front but don't have a solid lead, manage your sparks and try to time your last skyway for the final lap. Stingray's high speed means you can hold onto your sky boost for a long time on some tracks, though it depends
You will lose a lot of GPs because Mute City I and II are both heavily biased against Stingray. I need to get to the skyway on the first half of the first lap if I want a chance at getting top 5, and I have not found a way to be consistent at doing that yet.

        Anonymous

Mute City II is a lot better than Mute City I for the stingray. It's still not great but it's a significant improvement.

Falcon’s style is opportunism. It can sort of do all the other car’s tactics when the situation calls for it, which is quite powerful. But it requires very good fundamentals. If you’re struggling with Falcon I recommend going for wins with the other vehicles first.

said, gauge the situation and you can be a walgreens knockoff of Stingray or Fox. Playing to get 1st with it is kind of hard since opportunities as good as to allow you to get 1st are rare but this is surprisingly solid enough in GPs.
Winning a GPs with 5ths across all maps as Falcon is not an unlikely outcome, any Falcon would tell you.

It’s still lethal, don’t underestimate it, and save boost just to make that jump safe if that’s what it takes. Don’t be a dumbass like me.
Was in this exact situation. 3/3/4/4, and all I had to do was place within 6 ranks of my rival, which is normally very easy since Falcon does fantastically on White Land II in a multiplayer situation.

          No, you will get Out-foxed.
Stingray only boosts on lap 1 and lap 4
The play is to conserve your meter as much as possible for the final lap while trying to time a skyway near the end of the race.
Use your top speed and much better cornering to compensate the fact you can't boost much. Abuse the shit out of people bumping you from behind to get back to top speed.

Saw it coming and it was going to happen eventually, but it sad that people are starting to drop off of the game now because of the growing frustrations of being unable to win. There will of course be those people who are just happy to place well, or have the patience to grind and grind for that win; but most don't have either trait and will just go play something else as they see the skill gap in 99 grow more and more over time. The rival system is a great idea to not make it feel like shit even if they do place poorly, but at some point a person is going to want to win instead of constantly filling a bar that gives no reward, and now that you're almost guaranteed to have some 99+ killer in any game it's going to be damn near impossible for anybody new to the series to score that win.

If the performance of this game does result in a new F-Zero game I do hope those devs have taken notes from 99 and come up with some way to have a solid matchmaking system. Cause if people think 99 is tough to win at, it's going to be hell for them once the franchise goes back to the 3rd dimension.

The fact that lobbies fill a lot slower now and that going into modes like Pro Tracks has a 50/50 shot of even hitting the 99 player count. Then there's the many people online (and irl in my case) I've seen talk about how they stopped playing the game, these threads progressively getting slower and slower to hitting the bump limit, etc.

I'm not doomposting or claiming that the game is dead, I'm just thinking out loud about ways the decline in player count could possibly be slowed in a hypothetical new F-Zero game. If you can't see that 99 isn't as populated as it was the first 2 weeks though, you're either not paying attention or denying reality. The player count was always going to fall as time went on.

I recommended this to someone, so it was probably me. Every vehicle should boost there in my opinion. Regarding your video I can see you aren't drifting for correction, check my example. Could've prevented the wall hit easily. Also that blast turning shouldn't be required at those low speeds, just turn with drifting instead to conserve speed (only Stingray can do this).

            Anonymous

Thanks anon, I will keep those tips in mind. I only started using Stingray yesterday so I am very appreciative of advice.

Well that was a ride, but I'm out of tickets. I've seen many here struggling and I want to see you guys win more, so ask me anything and I'll do my best to answer. I've gotten 1st in all GPs with all vehicles, so I should be able to answer almost anything. I'll also post a few videos of my time in Queen GP, sharing a few strategies and secrets.

Based Rick, I think I've seen you in several matches. Impressive scoring. Name yourself after Rick Wheeler or just a coincidence? Also, any tips for nailing all the boosts in Death Wind II without slamming into walls?

            SNES F Zero sucks
Give me F Zero GX 99 and then I'll care

If you have NSO, you should give a try anon. A lot of people went into this expecting to dislike it but have enjoyed it.

            >Get queued up with a bunch of sweaty S2-10s

Keep trying anon, I got a GP win today with only one track I took 1st on, the rest were top 5 and a horrible top 30 for Mute City II. Sometimes even the sweaty pros choke or get a crash out at just the wrong moment.

              Anonymous

Rick is just a nickname I've had. Haven't done a ton of Death Wind II yet but just like Death Wind I, spin before boosts as best you can to prevent being knocked away. Spin on first boost pad, use drift correction for the second one (do not let go of gas or you will slide out). Fully let off gas and drift turn into third one as best you can.

Here's a simple video all Stingray/Goose need to know, and still very useful for the others. Get bumps from other players as much as possible. Anytime you see a player slightly behind you, drift into them for a speed boost. Practice on the starting area and eventually it'll become second nature throughout the race. Goose/Stingray should always be wary of their current speed, and fish for bumps if they need them, and in some cases, use an emergency boost to resolve the problem.

The last piece I'll say is that almost no one uses drift correction enough from what I've seen from streams/videos. No human can perfect a turn every time, but drifting can easily fix it. It's the number one reason I've always liked SNES F-Zero. is really a good example of this, but in all the videos I posted you'll see I constantly make minor adjustments almost every turn. They're also a way of optimizing speed, since you can bypass the hypotenuse entirely. All vehicles not Stingray also will lose speed on anything that isn't a tiny turn, so if you can drift instead of turn, always do it.

            Hit rank S7
            Still haven't won a GP
I dedicated all of today and yesterday to this game, my fingers feel like they're going to fall off

Mute Shitty II is a crapshoot, especially for Stingray primarily due to how many players there are that can screw you over. It's the only reason I don't play that vehicle as much as the others. But if you do manage a 1st-3rd place then you're halfway there to 1st place in GP. I've already posted the best skyway in Mute 2. Port Town I believe the best is after the jump over the gap (and if it gets an extended one this is probably the most busted skyway of all). Stingrays dominate Red Canyon because the start favors them (if you start with jumps, jump left twice going through dirt, if arrows, arrow right twice through dirt for easy starting in 1st-5th place), plus you can take the jump skip if you're gutsy. Boost through the dirt on the right side of the windy part. Only thing you need to do for White Land 2 is cut through the damage area and boost afterwards.

What are your recommendations for Port Town I and Red Canyon for Stingray? I always seem to place really badly on those two in particular. For both I keep ending up in an awkward situation on the last lap where I'm top 10 but can't get super boost fast enough and get passed up by people on the skyway and finish at 20-30.

                Anonymous

not the super expert anon but I have won some GPs
                >Red Canyon
Either frontrun from the very beginning or bag the first lap to get a skyway of your own depending on how strong your start is. Always go for jump cut. Boost across the gravel in the snaking path at the end.
                >Port Town I
Don’t slow down anywhere for any reason. This version is simple enough that you can use your boost whenever you lose top speed (don’t do this on Port Town II)

                Anonymous

Port Town I is also quite chaotic mostly because of how simple the course is. Again, the best area for the skyway, I believe, is on the jump over the gap, just before you land. The part where I see most people have problems with is the magnets. Use drift to counteract these, and for the last magnet, drift into it at the end to set you up for a nice turn. Save your boosts for the end as best you can, and constantly spin in groups to preserve your energy. Sorry, this is very generic advice because it's a very generic course. Any Stingray that scores high on both Mute City II and Port Town I basically has the GP won so long as they don't choke on White Land I.

Red Canyon is one map you never want to be behind on (ideally you will never take a skyway, but don't give up if you must), and in GP, the start is always the same: Criss cross jumps and boosts (strategy already said in previous post) This is fantastic for Stingray as it allows him to be in 1st-10th place by the starting line most of the time because he moves through dirt easily. From there, boost in the windy part (through dirt on right side, this route avoids most bumpers too), save spare boost for emergency. Unlike all other craft, the first and second turn of the race isn't going to slow you down much. Stingray dominates this course. Also consider practice mode if you want to master the jump skip. I'll make a video of that soon.

Thanks, I don't have too much experience with Stingray because I only picked it up a few days ago but I found I was doing better with it than the other machines. I'll keep these tips in mind next GP.

Greentext and meme all you want, but it doesn't change the truth. Spin attack doesn't do enough damage and simply not reliable enough to "farm other racers as your recharge zone". Pico only survives as a character because of his status, but his main "gimmick" of being the aggressive bruiser simply doesn't work in 99 with the way the game is currently balanced.

Not him, but I think spins damage should be boosted for everyone, and bumo damage should be reduced. It's dumb that simply existing in the group as falcon removes half your bar. It's dumb that spinning is really ONLY a defensive maneuver, since you basically don't do shit with it otherwise. It's stupid that the netcode is so shit that 100% of the time I will spin bump someone at an opportune moment as any car, watch them move from position, then watch them teleport right back into position since it never really happened on their side. It's extremely unrewarding and feels unfair to be slammed off into the distance by someone else, but to never be able to get that same feedback in reverse when I do it back to someone.
              >hur, fox player
Nope, been playing Falcon and Ray recently. Even as Goose I don't feel like I make an impact on others, but they can do so to me. The latency is really handled poorly.

That's alright, Goose will always be by your side. Spinning.

      Anonymous

This is pretty much me, had been full on goose but swapped after trying to get better at the game and learn stuff better. Now I find myself wanting to stick with Stingray.

Duly noted on the Death Wind II boosts, thanks! And the bump boosting is also great advice, I've been trying to take advantage of it as much as I can. Has helped me learn better boost conservation.

Here's an example of Mute City II, with almost more nuances than I can count
    >boost in healing because I know I won't need it, I have my route planned
    >panic slow down but still get the best skyway (2 arrows + skip)
    >drift right on jump to give room to dodge second jump because jump pad is slower than boost
    >perfect the final corner knowing I will use a boost
This is essentially the perfect final lap, but most laps should be done this way as well. I normally take the left side of the circle because most others do (more sparks), plus it's easier to set up on the jump.

      Anonymous

Pretty sure that "Poo" you stole first from is GrandPooBear. Nicely done.

        Anonymous

I've seen Poo a few times in the lead-ish as Fox but I don't recall ever seeing him in the finals in GP, at least not top 3, or specifically beating me. There's only about 3 people I've raced that frick me up, and every single one is a Stingray because if luck is on their side, they win against all other craft. But Goose is extremely consistent and saves a ton of boost for the final lap to either overtake others or as insurance against tons of bumpers, something no other racer can do.

Very nice. Should Stingrays be avoiding both jumps if they're at max speed, or just the 2nd one?

No one should avoid the first jump unless you have tons of surplus to double boost on that stretch (sometimes happens for Fox/Goose or if you just got a kill and you need to burn your boost). The only reason you should specifically avoid jumps is if you are boosting, because they will kill your speed. All racers should avoid the second jump and boost through gravel instead except "maybe" Stingray. If you need more sparks for the skip in the video, trudge through the dirt and fall back slightly if at all because Stingray has dirt resistance. If you don't and you need to burn your one boost for the lap, do the boost-dirt skip, avoid the jump, and fish for a bump from another player after the turn. Or boost after the final turn to increase your chances of scoring a KO, it hardly matters for Stingray.

Here is the Red Canyon skip. Only Stingray can do it without a boost, but using a boost to do this is pointless. Also it is not easy, and I have double digit crashouts on this jump. Note exactly how it's done. Hit the jump on the edge, 90 degree angle to the landing zone, drift to maximize distance (so you aren't traveling along the hypotenuse) and then swerve just before landing so you don't crash forward into the wall. This will fail entirely if you aren't going exactly 478 before the jump. If you do this during GP you are a madman and have my respect. Bonus points if you feel the bump from the wall behind (not damage but actual bump). That means you barely made it.

And no, landing on the jump at 478 from the previous jump doesn't seem to "always" work for other vehicles and it makes a risky jump turn into a risky and pure luck jump. Don't try it.

      Anonymous

      >Only Stingray can do it without a boost, but using a boost to do this is pointless.
That doesn't make any sense, ramps reset your speed and it's the same speed for everyone. Boosting over a ramp just wastes your boost and every car goes just as far because your top speed in the air is always the same.

        Anonymous

The game clearly considers your speed when hitting the ramp to determine how high you go, and then sets your speed after. See video. Fox can't even make the jump going fully straight, no swerve. But now I've discovered there's a cue to whether or not you made the double jump. If you hear the landing sound, you're going to die, but if not, you did it. Going to see how well I can do this in 99s soon.

Game needs a skill based queue system. What rank you are is who you should be competing with, A ranks play with A ranks, S ranks play with S ranks, S10 hikkineets should ONLY play with their own kind, unironically killing the spirit of the game imho.

Stingray is VASTLY too weak. I get pushed around more with this thing than Fox and Falcon. The slightest touch of another racer sends me sailing off to the side, or even entirely backward. NTA but how are you supposed to do that when you start behind everyone due to the worst acceleration?

          Anonymous

Hold drift when you boost at the start. You will usually bump into the person behind you, giving you yet another boost. This is usually enough to get you from 40-60, to 20-30. Do it again and you're in 10th.

            Anonymous

Clearly you dunno what you're talking about, can't boost for shit when you're low on speed.

              Anonymous

You absolutely can at the start of the line up. You have to hold on the gas when it counts down. The timing depends on exactly what machine you chose because it's tied to your acceleration stat. For ray, I think it's at the end of the second ellipsis/dot. Your accel isn't as good as everyone else's so you're quickly overtaken, but if you press and hold drift a tad after that boost, you'll be rammed by the other pilot you're going against, and you'll get a small boost forward from their momentum and they'll LOSE speed as well. This is a mandatory strat to get a good lead in the SNES version on master difficulty.

                Anonymous

I mean drift, not boost. You can't get ahead of other people fast enough to bump off of them unless they're so moronic they don't do a starting boost.

It also has the worst speed cap. You are actually reading the car's stats when you select them, right?

                Anonymous

Stat scaling. If you and another person boost at the same time, a ray's boost is more powerful than any other racers. You'll move slightly farther. I'm trying to help you, my guy and you're just vehemently resisting all advice because you're mentally stuck in the 'can't win' zone.

No, the feedback for hitting other machines is drastically reduced in 99. Hitting a red/blue bumper is closer to what hitting any machine in SNES feels like.

why can blue bumpers move onto the pit stop? also while we're at it why do red bumpers exist at all?

Red bumpers exist so people can't break away from the crowd and get an easy cruise to victory. Learning to outmaneuver them is key to winning.

I'll say this much, people aren't joking when they say to utilise the practice mode. In relentlessly attempting to beat the time on White Land II it became incredibly easy on the Stingray for me, and the only thing I had to fight on that track was bumpers when it came to this grand prix. Anyway, this was finally my grand prix win with the Stingray and I've really come to appreciate it a lot, despite absolute hating it in the beginning.
Now all that's left is to demean myself and get my grand prix win with the Fox...

          Anonymous

Falcon is a bit of an odd one to win with. He doesn't have a set-in-stone game plan, unlike every other vehicle. He has to make decisions on the fly. Usually, you want to try to set up a situation where you can steal first on the last lap. But in other cases, like say you get skyway early, you might need to steal it early and maintain it until the end. It can be surprisingly complicated, make sure you watch and manage your resources carefully.

Sometimes it just doesn't happen, and that's why you've gotta keep an eye on it. If you don't think you're going to have a skyway in time, you instead need to boost at very optimal times to keep up with the lead.

They’re more likely to add just the BS tracks than any of the machines. Every new car would need a full set of decals to match the original four and I can't see that happening

For Fire Stingray, is the general strategy to conserve for the first 2 laps, using your higher top speed to keep towards the ~20-40s, and then skyway + burn all your conserved power to try and take first in the last lap?

Just picked up Stingray and that's what I've been doing so far and it feels like I either do great, was even able to get a 1st place, or I can't break through the pack at the end and do worse than I usually average on other machines.

Also it feels like there's a hidden weight stat that's different than durability, because it feels like I get pushed around more as Stingray, even though I'm supposedly more durable than Fox and Falcon.

      Anonymous

      No, you just described Goose

Stingray wants to get a lead ASAP and keep it. It's not very good at stealing them.

      Anonymous

Stingray, for whatever reason, just seems to be heavily affected by other cars. I'm starting to think it's durability may be bugged. No explanation other than a hidden weight stat. I sometimes come into the recovery put from the starting ramp with almost half health, usually around 70th.

It wasnt bad during knight GP, you were usually matched with players in your general level (level 1 - 30s if you were ~lv10)
All my attempts at Queen GP thus far had at least 10-20 players with ranks such as S4 , S6, S8 , S fricking 10 who are lv60-80 (Im rank S lv42). You have to play PERFECTLY to get the trophy now. I got two 1sts and three top 10s and only got 2nd place overall, with a S10 neet taking over my 1st for the last race.

Base it on leaderboard points. The more wins you get each week, the stronger your opponents are. The people who keep gaining points when already at the top are the actual most skilled. It does mean the start of each week will be chaos though, but that can be fun if it's not the norm

S+ and up should simply be their own league. We shouldn't be matched with anyone S or lower.

          Anonymous

Those ranks feel mostly arbitrary though. I only got my first win after I reached S rank. As long as you consistently manage to beat rivals you rank up pretty fast, even if you don't manage to win anything. It needs to be separated by wins because those are the autists that are racking up the numbers

well i actually managed to finish a gp for the first time, 10th place though which is pretty fricking miserable

10th out of 99 players is respectable. Keep at it anon!

Don't think that, just reaching White Land II alone is praiseworthy, you already do better than 79 poor souls by reaching that point. good luck in your next GP.

i guess youre right, i have a horrible habit of getting way too hard on myself sometimes. ill just have to keep trying until i win something i guess

Why are people level 0? Also, what are the boost colors at 65 and 85? I'd love for at least one to make me actually want to change from the default blue.

I still can't believe this happened, I even took White Land II as peaceful as possible and still ended 2nd. Never give up bros, never give up. My hands are still trembling as I write this, how did I do so well?

Frick anyone who complained about the jump on White Land II being shortened. I was in first place because nobody knows how to drive the course yet, got lightly tapped by a bumper and lost all my speed before doing the jump and crashed.

should have boosted lol lmao pwned

FRICK YOU THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH TIME TO BOOST IT WAS LITERALLY RIGHT BEFORE THE JUMP

          Anonymous

You lose your boost speed while you are in the air by the way

          Anonymous

You should boost after exiting that last ice turn before the jump.

            Anonymous

I always do that, but the bumper was in the wrong spot and sapped my speed right before the jump.

            Anonymous

Right after you exit the multi-u-turn hell hole, you can boost, hold R and let let go of the gas to turn more tightly. And of course, do the same without boosting around the ice patch before the jump.

You can do it! Might take a few runs but it's not as hard as it may seem at first. Stingray is actually really good for this track.

            Anonymous

There were anons in this thread saying Stingray could not afford to boost after the hairpins. They were morons.

              Anonymous

If you aren't boosting after those, you ain't winning. You dont need the boost after the uturn in the icy area.

                Anonymous

There is no world in which you 1) don't cut those hairpins, and 2) boost immediately afterwards to regain your speed. IT IS THE BIGGEST TIME SAVE ON THE ENTIRE MAP.

                Anonymous

                nope

The world where you barely have any boost unless you sandbag for a skyway,
which you should since if you get that far you should already have the rank points to cruise and win with a 10th. You are objectively correct that it is STRICTLY necessary to boost there on Stingray if you want to play fair, but slowing down and getting even a single skyway is enough to have a massive life lead you can snag 1st with all the same.

Barely got it with a 2:03.70. The jump was honestly all i needed to eke out that last little bit. On top of some lucky bumps through the hairpins

I'd never do that jump unless the 1st Place was on the line, I'm afraid of myself screwing it up, I already risk it enough by doing the gap jumps on Red Canyon and White Land I.

You are definitely not alone, I used to be like that but I've tried to wean off that behavior, it costed me way too many victories or got me killed . Best to just treat it as a bonus and carry on with business as usual. Play like normal and then expend extra meter in the final lap when it's safe / you can do so without slamming into shit.

practice the courses. dead serious. you will feel better when you learn where the best use of skyways are but if you practice a course without all that other bullshit in the way and get used to where to boost, you will get better placings alone off of that.
