Is that good? I've been wanting a retro hockey game to play besides blades of steel

Loony Toons B-Ball was excellent though. Was that before or after Space Jam?

Frick I remember this, when you set the conditions to snowy/icy and could drive for the try line like 10 meters away and just slide in there unstoppable

Are there any sports IPs that objectively peaked in retro (not stuff like FIFA that you just personally think is the best in 2006 or some shit)

      Anonymous

Not sure if you consider wrestling games sports games but it's pretty much universally agreed upon that WWF/E games peaked on the N64

        Anonymous

I disagree. WWF games peaked on the PS2. Here comes the Pain, SvR 2006 and SvR 2007 are easily the golden trinity of wrestling vidya

While I prefer the Aki N64 titles, Shut Your Mouth and Here Comes the Pain are both really good. I haven't played the SvR games, maybe I'll check them out

You should at least try out 06 and 07. You dont need to go beyond those two though. I own 08, but I dont even remember that one enough to say if it was good or not. No idea of the quality of the series from there onwards.

All the pro football games peaked in the retro era. Madden 2004-2005 was one of the last good ones beside MAYBE 2008 (released in 2007 so it might count). ESPN NFL 2k5 is still probably the greatest sim football game of all time.

Fine by me I always hated him and would bench his alternate to let Scotty shine.

Ken Griffey baseball SNES (picrel). Janky and funny but balanced and still fun as hell to play. NBA Live 95 with fouls and out of bounds turned off is great. NHL 96, Virtua Tennis 2K1, Virtua Athlete for stupid jank, Mario Golf GC and GBA. NFL Blitz.

I also acknowledge pro wrestling is essentially a soap opera for men. But your critique of wrestling is completely irrelevant to this conversation. Video game adaptations of wrestling (the /vr/ ones at least) have zero focus on narrative whatsoever. They are purely about the physicality. When you are playing the game, it's not like the game itself is scripted. It's just as much of a competition as Madden or FIFA.

    lmfao

    Some of my favorites
    Tecmo Super Bowl
    Ice Hockey (1988)
John Madden Football '92 (Reggie White + Randall Cunningham = bliss)
NHLPA '93 (better ratings balance, more kino rosters, fighting.)
NHL '94-'97 DOS (fricking insanely good games)
NBA Live '96 (on DOS it's fricking sweet, it's basically the Genesis version with 32 bit graphix)
Virtual Pro Wrestling 64 (best roster in a wrestling game, maybe ever.)
NBA Showtime: NBA on NBC (the best Midway basketball game)
NHL 2000, either that or Mario 64 is the first game I ever played. PC version has surprisingly deep Dynasty Mode for '99. Game looks fricking incredible with 3D acceleration.
Tiger Woods 2004, so fricking good.
NCAA Football 06, best collegiate sports game ever made.
Madden NFL 07, best /vr/ sports management experience.
