blessing this thread for a long life in the name of satan fricking amen or something (I'll post recommendations in a sec)
Brutal Doom. I never played the original game.
have a nice day zoomer homosexual
based, brutal doom is a straight upgrade to classic doom
TNT
dbzone
as soon as Map02 you're fighting to the front of a convoy of trains that are running side-by-side, having shootouts across them and hopping back and forth between them.
Frick year DBZone
Sunlust is fun.
>Sunlust is fun.
its too hard, feels like it was made for people who have been playing DOOM since the dawn of time
earth.wad
"one of the ten best WADS of 1998"
10 maps of admirably creative expansion from the default "look" of Doom while still staying inside its original constraints.
>Map called Emerald Spire
>The Emerald Spire is just a small setpiece
>Mount Pain
>The mountain is just some background object that lost souls drift over from
These days I'd have to say Eviternity.
As for a single map, can it be one in a megawad? If so then the underwater lab from, if I remember this right, Joy of Mapping 5. The one where there's Cthulhu ruins at the end.
The Sky May Be
>PURIFY
Having a good time with a Golden Souls 2 playthrough currently
Anyone actually played Final Doom or the Master Levels? If so, what did you think of them?
TNT and Plutonia are pretty good.
Master Levels are kinda awful
TNT - good until the last third, then becomes GIANT maps with way, way too many distant chaingunners chipping your health away. For some reason Plutonia gets the flak for this though.
Plutonia - the original tough wad, the maps are actually fairly small but are tough. Expect revenants and archviles, but compared to some modern mapsets its pretty tame. Will still easily kick a casual's ass.
equinox.wad
I will forever sing the praises of this wad. It's got cheesy tech architecture, environmental storytelling, a rudimentary hub level, it's great
How compatible is it with multiplayer?
I don't think there's anything in it that'd break multiplayer, go nuts
It's just that some mods (like sunder) have zero compatibility and can, and will, lock you out of progress forever if you try to co-op them, enter a room, then die.
fair. the original readme for equinox has this:
* Play Information *
Game : DOOM2 (enhanced/modified)
Map # : 1 - 13
Single Player : Designed for
Cooperative 2-4 Player : Yes
Deathmatch 2-4 Player : Yes
Other game styles : no
Difficulty Settings : Yes
I remember playing it with other people at least a couple times on old Skulltag servers without running into any shit like rooms that seal off after you open them so you can't re-enter if you die, etc. but it's been a long time.
Sounds Reddit, I’m gonna pass
here's another one. It came out in 2001 so if it's too reddit 4 u that's reddit's fricking problem for aping this sick wad
this one
Eviternity
Hellbound
Ancient aliens
JPCP
Scythe 2
Sunlust
Whitemare
Btsx 1 & 2
Sunder
Hellbound is a fantastic megawad, the only downside to it is that some of the fights on the tailend of the wad are kinda halfassed. But it's really atmospheric, and it only used stock Doom 2 textures too, which is neat.
Heretical Doom.
Makes Heretic really fun, and I already liked it. For some reason the starting wand is so satisfying compared to the pistol.
Sunlust is the best WAD ever made, and no brutal doom/overpowered weapon mod shit.
emodeath.wad
I'm sort of kidding, I just found it as I'm digging through my 15 year old doom folder. Still, you get to choose between shotgun, overdose, or window jump and there's a sick MCR poster recreated in MSPaint
Hellcore
It took 9 years to release, out in 2004. Lots of variation in these maps but the good ones are really good. Baron Streets is my fav. It has $1.52/gal regular unleaded
God damn those were the days
I post HQ wads every time I'm in one of these threads. Clans used to use them as chatrooms, with little bedroom areas for every member with their own posters and stuff in em. I really wish this aspect of multiplayer gaming could live on in something modern but I fear it's gone forever.
>Clans used to use them as chatrooms, with little bedroom areas for every member with their own posters and stuff in em
Shit that sounds awesome, I'm suprised MMOs never had something like that (at least ones I've heard of)
Alpha/delta invasion multiplayer on skulltag/zdaemon was one of the best multiplayer experiences of my life
Gameplay
Breach and Brigandine.
memento mori 2
uacmilitary nightmare
based
brutalBlack folk on suicide watch
recomend me some rlly gud terry wads
UAC Ultra
Japanese Community Project
Some episodes of Eviternity (it does drag on a bit though)
Ancient Aliens (You'll either love it or hate it. I gave up on my pistol start run half way through, but I can't deny it looks amazing and the soundtrack is wonderful)
I never completed it, but Going Down is amazing and I love the moronic end chapter phonecalls.
>I always watch youtubers play difficult WADs
>decino starts playing micro-slaughter community project
>decide to play along and try to do them single segment too
I just cant fricking do half of the levels without saves. It took me 50+ tries to do the october appreciation one and it was hell. For level 14 I needed to do saves in the middle of the fights, Im not good enough for this.
I completed going down. It has some fun levels, but some of them you just die from random bullshit.
I just don't have the time or patience to play saveless. I'm not a good Doom player anyway and having to restart maps over and over annoys me, so I allow for one or two saves per level depending on how bullshit it gets.
I have taken to pistol starts though, and it really helps you appreciate the work the mapper goes into to achieve a fun balance and challenge when you can't just run around with a super shotgun with 80 shells every time.
>pistol start
Same. When I started playing doom I though it was a try-hard challenge for purists, but at the end it has made the game a lot more fun for me.
>limited saves
I should give this a try. Im just not good enough for no saves and grinding levels is doing things to my head. I close my eyes and I see clouds of revenant fireballs coming towards me.
You should. Limited saves aren't making things much easier because you're only allowing yourself a checkpoint or two mid level.
If i hven't died yet and just over half the demons are dead, I save. Otherwise, I leave saving until after clearing tough areas.
Any quick recommendations on maps that would work with hideous destructor for squad play for newbie/veterans. Maybe something urban and less slaughtery? We already tried HoESP/EDay but are experiencing issues so we think another map might help? Who knows.
Can someone name what wad is picrelated?
Speaking of, does Ganker have a zandronum server?
i don't think so but the /vr/ thread hosts games on weekends i think
Unloved is really good imo. It has its bullshit parts though
Honestly one of the scariest games I've ever played. I loved all the new enemies and assortment of clown-based weapons.
How do you guys feel about Sandy Peterson's map designs? Romero's? American McGee's?
Are there any good total-conversion (or close to it) mods with a more sci-fi or/and spacey theme?
Going Down
Sunlust
Speed of Doom
Eviternity
Three is a Crowd
And if you want something weird but is still fun/ unique then Congestion 1024. Lots of cool mapmaking tech there.
Sunlust on Hurt Me Plenty
Going Down if you turn off the music
Scythe / Scythe 2 up until a point
I like the shorter stuff and "combat puzzles". Wandering around a giant map forever like child lost in a convenience store is no fun for me. I don't care how pretty it looks.
I’m a Doom purist. I refuse to play any wad that uses weird textures or adds new monsters/weapons/animations
I'm sorry to hear about your disability anon, I hope you find a cure.
Oh speaking of, /vr/ recently submitted their own wad onto the idgames archive: https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/Ports/megawads/hardfun
