Only way to make a kino survival horror game. It's very effective because you can completely frick up your run at any time until you learn the game. There isn't a single mandatory battle, or one you can't avoid, all the way from the start of the game until you reach the ancient city, and even there you can avoid the vast majority of them. You can literally reach Le'garde in less than 5 minutes if you wish, without getting into a single battle on the way down.

I feel like I'm being tricked with this game. Is it really as good as people say? The gameplay looks like RNG bullshit with little to no depth.
You can beat the game consistently even with terrible luck, but it requires knowledge of what the frick you are doing and enemy behavior. The second game is more forgiving and it's very safe to save most of the time. The first one is more on the haha you die oops aspect, but it has broken items like blank scroll that allows you to get almost any item or skill in the game.
I'm playing F&H 2 right now and I absolutely loved the first one, but the main appeal is mostly the lore, the atmosphere, the anxiety-inducing mechanics like mind-depleting enemies, hunger, etc, and the huge amount of details and content that you can miss. The gameplay in itself is nothing to really talk about, it is not what the game revolves around.
If you're in for the gamemplay, I don't think you'll like it, but if you want to immerse yourself in a really well built horror setting with a ton of little stories and content to discover, then you should definitely go for it.

it's very effective at generating the crushingly bleak atmosphere it's aiming for and has a unique (if technically poor) artstyle so there's that.

I still need to get the S endings in the first game, I might do it some time soon. I was thinking what would be the strategy to beat them, I already know what I have to do for each of them so that's not an issue. I was thinking for the merc and the knight I would just replay the start over and over until I get an empty scroll in order to get a white angel soul, I should be able to avoid all non-essential fights with it so that should make the whole thing fairly easy, but the priest and the outlander are gonna be tough to beat, I was thinking about doing the same but trying to get 2 empty scrolls, one for the white angel soul and to get necromancy, that should make all the boss fights doable, with some luck of course.
S for D'Arce and Cahara are relatively easy even without white angel soul, or any other special gear setup.
