This, In the game's final moments Kuja is depicted in a relatively sympathetic light, and I found this to be morally reprehensible on the part of the game. Our last interactions with Kuja showcased him defiantly wanting to destroy the crystal of creation, and eventually, he's a sorry sack of shit I'm supposed to care about. What in the flipping frick is that about?
So instead of having Necron why not have a scene where we engage Kuja intellectually? This confrontation would force Kuja to address the needlessness of his actions. All I am asking for is the game to justify Kuja’s redemptive arc, but it doesn’t! Instead, we have to fight a random butthole called "Necron," whom we have never seen before, and the game has not once created a scaffold for. What a fricking shitshow!
Until this point, Kuja was just full himself. We watched him bring devastation and death wherever he found himself, and now we are expected to view him as either misguided or worth redemption. Kuja is directly responsible for multiple acts of genocide and war crimes. Not only that, but Kuja enacted all this destruction with a sadistic sense of glee. He doesn't deserve shit! That Zidane is willing to talk with Kuja as a brotherly figure is even more insulting. Minutes ago both characters were pining to erase each other from existence.
honestly do not think the writers understood how careless the conclusion of Kuja's story arc was. They used the pain and grief Kuja caused to evoke an emotional response out of the audience, and when that utility was no longer convenient they discarded it. This is what I find objectionable most of all. It is that the game uses genocide as a story beat and asks us to view things with a long-term styled form of thinking. This is beyond fricked when you stop and think about it.

In providing Kuja the briefest sense of redemption the game belittles the implications of his prior acts of cruelty. How is saving a dozen people even close to absolving him of the countless lives Kuja ended at Madain Sari, Terra, Alexandria, Lindblum and Burmecia? This is dancing around a more fundamental issue I have with our chat with Kuja. By having this scene I feel as if the game uses genocide and war crimes as an empty story device.
From a more figurative perspective, the game does not do enough to set up what part of Kuja is worth “saving.”. For much of the game we have watched Kuja massacre civilians, profit from wars, spread mist, and raze entire cities. And yet we are told of the importance of remembering Kuja's legacy as part of Mikoto's eulogy. But what part of Kuja's legacy is worth saving? If we save any part of Kuja's legacy, isn't the game whitewashing his more heinous acts?
I see so much wasted potential with Kuja. The game could have drawn our attention to clear parallels between Kuja and Zidane, or even Vivi. Sadly the game changes Kuja's characterization on a whim, and we are expected to accept this for the sake of the story. You get a twinge of resignation by Kuja when you finally confront him, but the game shirks away from making good on this. For what seemed like 90% of the game we watched Kuja make shitty affectations as he billowed Shakespearean prose, and then for the last 10% he stops. We never witness Kuja toiling at his mortality, or regretting his actions as he tried to contextualize his fate. We juxtapose from wienery Kuja to vindictive Kuja and finally to redemptive Kuja all in two hours. This has the unfortunate consequence of cheapening every emotional note the game pines for with the later scenes involving Kuja, especially his final interactions with Zidane. The scaffold in which Kuja's story arc is built upon is so nakedly transparent to the audience, it is honestly painful to watch.

I think you're reading too much into the statement. It doesn't single Quina out and is probably meant to be talking about the cast in general. In contrast, the game's actual text is pretty clear that Quina isn't someone to be taken very seriously. The party finds s/he offputting and the Qu's entire deal is just that they want to eat shit, to the point that Vivi's 'grandfather' was planning on eating him.

Eiko is better than garnet since double holy and actual summoner gameplay.
Zidane/Steiner/Freya/Quina is the tryhard party. Zidane/Freya/Quina all have guaranteed 9999 damage abilities and they all have good enough normal attack damage to take advantage of Steiner's "Charge!" which is situationally the single most powerful attack in the game.
You can use any party you want. I prefer Freya over Steiner.

This isn't an accurate translation for the english version, Zidane's dialogue in the original japanese version was more flowery and he even implies that Garnet is "so sad that she can't see the good stuff around here, such as the glittering seashells on the shore". But this whole "so sad she can't even see the good stuff in front of her" context is never brought up by Zidane again or an issue before that or after.
There is also actually a deleted scene here that happens if you choose "forget it", which you can see on YouTube, where Zidane can't get Garnet out of his head. I don't know why it was cut. But anyways, I just want everyone to remember these scenes as well, because I will be using them as an example as to show why Zidane acts inconsistently later in Lindblum, and why this game only pretends that the love story is a big thing.

This is what I meant regarding Beatrix back at the end of chapter 1, she doesn't seem to have any concern for Garnet here and doesn't even mention her. She's more interested in being a warmongering *word that means female dog* and committing an unprovoked attack on Burmecia while blindly following the obviously insane Queen's orders, she doesn't ask for Garnet's whereabouts when she sees Zidane, nor does Zidane try to reason with her by saying what Garnet would think of Beatrix if she saw what she was doing right now. No, there's nothing about FFIX that makes it better than VII or VIII, in fact it's a regressive step backwards. It's just that people are more familiar with the previous two whereas IX was released at an awkward time between the PS1 and PS2 so not as many people played it and it didn't get anywhere near the media coverage because people were already talking about FFX which was out in Japan by the time IX was in the west.
Because of this it has a bit of protected status because it is never given the same scrutiny so fans of it can proclaim it "the good one" without anywhere near as much backlash from those who hate the FF series. But anyone with a little care to objective criticism can see the deep flaws in it's design and the the rushed nature of being put together while most of Square were working on FFX and PlayOnline.

There is not a single point in time where this has been true. 8 was a let down compared to 7, 9 was seen as a return to form. It's been that way ever since.
NTA and IX is my favorite but let's not be moronic about it. IX was in a terrible position on the tail end of the PSX with a stylized colorful artstyle and not very popular, only appreciated by series oldgays and re-evaluated by others when everyone got sick of the brown and bloom era. I haven't tried that one, so I couldn't tell you.
Basically what AF does is change some things around to rebalance the game. It doesn't touch any of the loot drops, but it does play with what abilities you can learn from items and when, and enemies and bosses can have more status effects or occasionally have more defensives that you're not used to.
Also the blue magic has been changed a lot and the abilities you learn from eating can be radically different.
NT would regularly bloat boss HP and add random phases where bosses counter all attacks

VIII at least didn't pretend it was going to do full character arcs. Squall and Rinoa are in the logo, for crying out loud. They dominate the box art and the promotional material. The supporting characters in VIII are essentially Flat - but they're still rounded out with personalities and simple sub plots. It's not a crime to have a cast of characters that don't need to have huge subplots so long as they're given some life in the plot.
FFIX makes a big deal out of showing the entire cast, setting up elaborate subplots, then dropping every one of them to just focus on Garnet. Eventually Vivi and Zidane get some camera time, but she overwhelms the game. And since she's such a rubbish character, I found it obnoxious as hell.
Steiner was far too obnoxious, and his denial and obliviousness got dragged out for far too long, his involvement in Garnet’s dumb “run back home to just talk to mommy” subplot didn’t help.

Steiner's arc is not well done, funny how his character motivational poster is: "Dilemma". Which, in the original Japanese lines, is phrased as this:
"Loyalty astray. When you devote your life to someone, is it really for your own sake? Tell me, what do people live for?"
This, along with the rest of the character motivational posters of the cast, is presented as if they are concerned about such "deep questions", when in fact, this is something completely kindergarten-tier in writing. The theme of loyalty is not so bad in itself, but a character way too flawed such as Steiner is trying to reveal it that it just looks like one big mockery.
Steiner's development would have been much better done if he actually went to Burmecia with Freya and saw what happened. Seriously, how much more interesting would it be to for Steiner to see what Beatrix and the other Alexandrian knights were doing and to see the drama and conflict between them? But no, instead all we get clichéd bullshit like this where Steiner takes part in Garnet's stupid "run back home" subplot that just makes things worse and then only hears about Alexandria's atrocities after the fact.
All Squeenix needs to do is update the sprites to look like the OG cutscene characters and they are golden. But they won't. We all know designs will get changed, dialogue will get changed and combat will turn into flashy "hold X to win" anime-style bullshit.
With Square, I’m keeping my expectations at rock-bottom. Literally all the need to do is keep the EXACT same game and make it look like the CGI cutscenes. No change in artstyle, no fangs in combat except making it fast like X-2.

FF9 stops being ATB the moment you reach the point where you've basically dropped regular attacks. The Speed stat has no realistic value beyond making it a little faster for Zidane to reach 9999 damage.

it's not a remaster like FF8 based on the rumours. From what I gather it's more on the lines of FF7R but way less "ambitious". I think what we're getting is the graphical-music-VA overhaul, but with the combat and story remaining more or less identical. Maybe this is my own wishful thinking however.

There's something there that could be interesting and entertaining, they just horrifically bungled the execution to such a degree that I'm only aware of this right now because I read it off a fricking wiki.
They basically hid his backstory with Zidane in missable Treno ATE's. I've seen plenty of people completely unaware. It's still not much, but there's something there at least.
In principle I'm actually a big advocate for the ATE system. It felt like a fun way to characterise the cast at different points of the story whilst not forcing the player to watch a lot of cutscenes if they didn't want to. In Amarant's case, though, he's so threadbare without those details that he ends up being totally forgettable.
ATE system was a neat idea, but some of the ways they implemented it were stupid and you'd never be able to find some of these scenes without a guide because the way to get them is VERY unnatural and there's even that one in Lindblum that you can't get unless you have less than 100gil on you at the time.

The game was clearly made with multiple playthroughs in mind. There's a ton of easily missable stuff and this was back when physical game guides still sold well. Completing everything in a single playthrough is impossible without resorting to debug-level glitches.
You can do everything in one playthrough but it requires you to be very precise, like doing shit like this.

Yes. Its technically possible. You just have to do some kind of strange pathing through certain areas. Like backtracking so you don't trigger one before another sort of stuff.
I was following an old Gamefaqs guide for it and its not that bad. The more annoying stuff is getting all the frogs, all the coffees and a couple other weird side things. I also definitely cheated the jump rope game.
And you still will never technically 100% because there's a boss that can only be accessed if you get to the end of the game within a certain timeframe, and doing all the side bullshit will definitely put you over that.

The only thing Excalibur II blocks is getting 99 of certain items if you're aiming for a 100% save. Everything else can be done within the time limit or is accessible afterwards.

I'm not talking about trophies/achievements. That shit didn't even exist back when the game first released. I'm talking about a true 100% "I've seen and completed literally everything there is to do in this game" run. It was theorized to be possible but then the siblings quest was rediscovered and that pushed it into clear "impossible without cheating" territory.
It has an achievement tied to it for the rereleases, yes, this is simply showing how to view all the ATEs, which like I said, is basically impossible without a guide because of how unnatural you have to be in a town in order to see them.
Accidentally going one screen too far to the right, or walking into a room before you see something else and get locked out, you would never know there was an ATE you missed without guides like this that give you step by step instructions for visiting towns.

I'd say that's just throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Just make the ATEs a lot less missable and/or allow the player to catch-up on missed ATEs somehow.
There's a lot of misc. lore in FF9 that you won't get unless you watch all of the ATEs and a bunch of those require you to navigate through towns in a specific way. Amarant's backstory with Zidane fricking him over in the past is one of these.

The jump rope game is complete bullshit.
Moguri mod lets you change the value of each jump so you can set it so each jump gives 100 points, or even a thousand if you want.
You can also make it so Vivi runs faster on the Hippaul street run mini game.
The jumping is one of those things you can just leave for later. Not that it makes the minigame any better. But things like Hippaul racing are required within the time limit.

Why is FFVIII bad?
It’s still better than IX, Squall and Rinoa had a real developed romance while Garnet and Zidane fell in love for being within five feet of each other for a long period of time despite Garnet ABANDONING HIM and blowing him off. Garnet pushed "naive princess" to insane levels - Rinoa was actually plausible and realized when she got in over her head (end of Disc 1, she flipped out when she realized her actions had consequences). I remember Rinoa as a fully fleshed out character with flaws and good points despite getting chucked a Distress Ball for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I remember Garnet doing this to herself over and over. No, Rinoa makes you take one 5 minute detour so she can do something stupid and got caught by the villain thus requiring a quick rescue that doesn't change the fate of anyone or anything. Garnet makes you get one of your allies get turned to stone and puts all of your lives in danger, all to escape her crazy mother with a dangerous kidnapping attempt...than suddenly decides her mother was really a nice person that would stop being a genocidal murderer if she asked nicely instead of the evil scary monster that she put you all through hell and back to rescue her from...then ungratefully poisons everyone in the party, especially Zidane, the man who loves her, so she can go home and get captured again and placed in the evil ceremony that she was escaping from in the first place, thus getting even more people killed by her stupidity and ultimately giving the villains the weapons they use for the majority of the game to slaughter as many people as possible. And the player has to actually follow her through hours of gameplay of getting her to the damn Alexandria castle and then rescuing her. And nobody ever calls her out for it. We're actually supposed to feel sorry for her.

They may have made a couple of good decisions since then, but the Live A Live, SaGa series and Star Ocean 2 remasters and remakes were passion projects by people highly passionate about said games.

Kuja is the one who drives the entire plot forward from the start, not going to happen.
No, that would be Garland, who was a much better and more interesting complex character, unlike Kuja.
Garland is a much more morally ambiguous antagonist than Final Fantasy usually serves up (give or take a Delita). His job demands he get his hands dirty, but Garland is absolutely certain that his doing it for the sake of his world's survival absolves him. It's unfortunate that Final Fantasy IX's atrocious pacing robs him of the impact he should have had, and as a result he ends up playing third fiddle to Brahne and Kuja -- a pair of far more typical cartoon villains and less interesting antagonists.
In a way, but Kuja's the one setting what happens in the game in motion. It's like the Hojo/Sephiroth argument. Hojo's the source of all the shit coming into creation, but Sephiroth's the one doing it in the end. Garland's doing his job for thousands of years. It's Kuja's frickery that sets this entire game into play. Starting with brainwashing Brahne into gathering Alexander back together.
FFIX story events (current, not backstory) are a result of the struggle of Kuja's fear for Garland and his attempt to overthrow him.
Yeah well, Kuja is a shitty character, this is the problem with Kuja, he spends most of the game being a moustache twirling cartoon villain, doing stereotypical cartoon evil behaviour and generic JRPG stuff, but then, at the last minute, the game forcefully tries to make him out to be "complex, tragic and sympathetic".
Instead of drawing inspiration from a Shakespearian antagonist, Square apparently decided to base Kuja on the attention-whoring snots who get rejected at their auditions to play Shakespearian antagonists.
Overlooking the man-thong, the effeminate hair tosses, the mincing, the temper tantrums, and the embarrassing attempts at poetry, there just isn't much going on with this guy. He's like that one insufferable drama prostitute you knew back in high school: he always has to be the centre of attention, he never shuts the hell up even when he has nothing worth saying, and even when doing something immoral, he acts like he's standing in front of a full-body mirror and practicing for his role as Scar in the spring semester production of 'The Lion King'.
His only real interesting moments occur when he's ripping off of 'Blade Runner' and is revealed as Zidane's brother. But, as said above, that happens so late and forcefully into the game that you wonder why they even bothered (It's like the revelation that Lynx was Serge's father in Chrono Cross).
Even his theme music (which plays right here) is over the top and sounds like a generic "look at me, I'm EEEEVVVVVVIIIIIILLLLLLL *insert stereotypical evil laughter here*" music theme.
Also, I am of the theory that Sephiroth was being controlled and influenced by Jenova and Jenova was the one really behind everything.

Considering IX came out right when the PS2 was released (maybe even right after the PS2 was released), it did pretty well. I say this as someone who loves VII and VIII.

One of the worst parts of IX is the poorly done love story of Zidane and Garnet, which the game tries to make it all out to be a bigger deal and focus than it actually is. It is really overhyped, and if you think I'm exaggerating, look at:
a) The 'I want to be your Canary' play that clearly represents Zidane and Garnet, and it being shown at the beginning and end of the game, which I've already discussed above.
b) The fact that the main theme of the game, 'Melodies of Life', is a love song- and is even called "our song" by Zidane and Garnet, which plays constantly, in different mixes, throughout the whole game. (Even serving as the World Map theme music! Until Disk 4, anyways) Not even VIII's and X's main love songs were played out that much.
And finally,
c) The commercials and ads for IX generally gave off the impressions that it was heavily romance focused, with most of them playing 'Melodies of Life' in them and showing off mostly Zidane and Garnet's FMV scenes together. Don't believe me? Look at them yourself.
Now, I don't judge other stories that aren't love story focused. Heck, I read/watch One Piece, one of the best stories, and that isn't even romanced focused. (Though it does have a lot of teases) But the reason that I am judging IX on this so much is because that the game acts like it is love story focused, but does not really deliver.
After FFVII, which had the love triangle with Cloud-Tifa-Aerith and also that whole invisible affection score which determines who you date at the Gold Saucer, the three main games after it, VIII, IX and X (Which I like to call the "love story trilogy") all had major love stories of the main male and female characters, Squall/Rinoa, Zidane/Garnet and Tidus/Yuna, and Zidane and Garnet is the worst done out of these three. Squall/Rinoa and Tidus/Yuna had real developed romances while Garnet and Zidane fell in love for being within five feet of each other for a long period of time, and despite Garnet ABANDONING HIM and blowing him off, but we will get to that scene when the time comes in Lindblum. Heck, even VII's love story had more focus and better execution, despite it not even having a love song as its main theme, nor did it have the main couple on it's box cover art or logo like VIII or X did, and the VII remake is even expanding on all this!
