Something I've been wondering for a while, what's stopping them from just putting some of the custom faces as options in the character creator? Like Lyse's face for midlanders, Aymeric's for elezen, Gaius for highlanders, etc. .
Nothing in theory, in practice it might be you cannot physically add more than 4 faces per race. There's quite a lot of good faces in there they could add, and many which aren't tied to some famous NPC. Like there's something like 3-4 male and female doman/far eastern middie faces.

When elezen mitigate their gangly neck (via hair and outfits) and spindly limbs (via animation and poses) then their prettiness really shines. Had they designed them differently they would compete with miqo'te and au ra for player population.
Limiting it to S1 Garo was such a big mistake even through it's original run. I never wanted to be a dark knight warrior. Should have given me the armor of the dude with an actual axe.
Y'know my only exposure to Garo prior was that medieval theme anime, which I really really liked. Then it was a surprise for me that the original series was a modern day sentai kinda thing, haha.

It was one of the easier unlocks though? Shit like SMN that needed a random rare drop or NIN that forced you to grind a shitload of rep then walk all the way to fricking Norg were way worse.
SMN you needed to get all the weather effects too so it was an absolute ballache if you were unlucky with timings.
Most stressful to me was whichever of the ToAU jobs had you sneak into the middle of arrapago reef for an item
You didn't need to grind any rep for NIN, you just needed Tenshodo access. And the rubies for SMN weren't rare at all, you'd find thousands of them just casually killing leeches.
Things changed once you got Homam gear and wyrm armet and were fully decked out. I could solo greater colibri on drg while waiting for merit partys to get setup. Some of my favorite merit partys were full pierce drg/drg/drg/cor/brd/rdm.
I am sure they could've pulled it off.

It's because modders are outpacing devs now that XIV has become a modder safehaven. Contrary to popular belief, the devs do care about their image and they know that mods make them look bad, which is why EW and DT are seeing unprecedented levels of QoL additions. If XIV never became the Skyrim of MMIs, you'd never damage type indicators, job icons and roles as part of character names, in-game voidlist and filter, mount banking, etc.

A bunch of small changes in Iceborne were ripped straight off the "most downloaded" mods list for MHW like the option for a light pillar on monster shiny drops
I like that they're basically now just yoinking mods for QoL features at an accelerated rate. It can only serve to push XIV along and make it better.

There are a bunch of companies that do that, either officially or unofficially. Bethesda obviously (Todd even said he uses SkyUI), Bioware used mods as a benchmark for their Mass Effect remaster, CDPR's Cyberpunk update incorporated a lot of things modders had already fixed, etc.

Nothing. They probably just wanna keep them unique.
(That is to say the current Gaius, Aymeric, etc. faces are usually not made with the same proportions so the hair wouldn't fit right, but they could very easily adapt that for players and make it work. If they wanted.)

The story ended at 6.0. There is no way this is nearly as good so I am done with the game until proven otherwise. Also grinding other jobs is a pain. Why does wow out in an xp catch up event for alts every patch but 14 can't seem to figure that out?

If we're being honest it got really bad in SHB because bolide just emphasized how shit LD was.
Patches usually frick vfx/moveset mods, so a new expansion mod will almost definitely do so as well. I might actually stop playing reaper for a bit because the sin eater-themed reaper mod is probably going to be broken and I hate vanilla reaper's whole theme
My questions (directed at no one here, just more so the situation) now are:
Since they said all zones will be done in 7.0, does that mean they're done done and won't get any touch-ups beyond that?
How will they do gear? How long will it take to get all gear in the game updated, and will they look any better at all before they get their proper manual update?
How about NPCs?
Gear will be done in stages so there will be some horrifically outdated sets mixed with some newer stuff. Old minor npcs will look like ass while they will make sure the ones the players will focus on are all updated.
Mainly materials and lighting.
The new shader style they use isn't really something they can flip-flop between. PBR is just how it is now, which means that it has roughness and metalness values, as well as some other values.
They'll react differently to lighting and shadows than the previous system and things will look different because of that. It's basically like switching to a different rendering software in blender.
Gear will still look different as a result of them going over to PBR shaders, which fundamentally react differently to things, and different/upgraded lighting.
But it obviously will look better after a manual pass by the art teams to upscale the diffuse and normal maps and assign the right metallicness/roughness shader values to parts that require a different finish (like tiny metal embellishments on otherwise soft satiny gear)

The quality is clearly visible in the benchmark trailer. Meteor has pores now and the leather on the equipment is far higher quality than anything currently. and you'll have the benchmark yourself in a few hrs.

Ah yeah, the DPS rotation doesn't change much, phlegma, toxicon, e. dosis & dosis w/ pneuma.
Once you get to a baseline of like 40-50~ you get your OGCD heals and mitigation to weave in to recover MP then there's a lot of AOE heals & shields stacked in to 80/90 with a couple of healing boosts.
It's very cosy to play in dungeons, you get in the rhythm of dropping kerachone, then a taurochole on a tank followed by druo, get your charge back, panhaima, holos etc on the wall pulls to boss.
Technically you can't reach any aether currents until after Estinien sacrificed himself to create wind. Just gameplay wise your compass tells you it's there. There's no aether currents in the first area.
Honestly never spent enough time in Ultima Thule to think about it, the soundtrack is so fricking annoying. Which genius thought it would be a good idea to make the dramatic, emotional final confrontation music the permanent looping bgm for the entire zone?

The story/JRPG stuff is the main appeal as far as I can tell, but the story doesn't actually get good until Heavensward, which you don't unlock until level 50. Just think about how much resonance (because it actually invested in their development) the scions and your friends were by endwalker versus the "Lahabrea defeated by a magical girl scene of the power of friendship of these jackasses who use you as an uber-delivery-driver and the city state leaders who throw you to the wolves in a few patches and who except for Raubahn have frick all of any charisma towards you at this point".

Yeah they seemed to develop a self awareness with HW. I can't fault ARR too much because it was emergency fixing a half-sinking ship, and hindsight being 20/20 and all. That's cute. I've always been a big sucker for party games, back in college when I landed among normalgays I enjoyed the pre-going-out drinking games more than the parties. So while I know they won't do it right, I wish SE would actually double down on some of that, whatever the term they used, lifestyle or something, content. That's likely due to an inheritance or jump of shakespearian/actual theatre shit to the early sword and saddle stuff that wanted to go posh. Burst is centered on the caster in pvp, that high thunder was clearly targeted.
Either way I hope it's not called High Thunder, that's such a copout, so I do like Burst. I assume it'll just be an upgrade though since we've been using Thunder 3 forever now. Is this game any good for new players? I'm worried I'd just be lost since MMOs tend to add massive amounts of content over the years. Also I don't want to be the reason a group can't clear an instance.
Most of the content has roulettes to keep older content alive for the most part. You might be waiting in queues a bit for things like alliance raids. But you can pretty much do 90% of the content in the game. But its really just a story game that you play through, if you're not looking to play and get invested in a story you probably won't enjoy the game.
There's a very long free trial.
You can run through dungeons with NPCs if you're socially moronic.
All the normal difficulty content is piss easy so you wouldn't be holding anyone back anyway.
Your main timesink will be the MSQ which will take hundreds of hours to read through. Yes read, don't expect too much gameplay.
The long storyline sounds fine, I love Final Fantasy games in general and I've never minded story-heavy games. I've played most of the Yakuza games for example.
Just follow the MSQ and do the oher stuff at your leasure and as it catches your interest. You don't even need to group for mandatory content and can just use npcs, not that it matters because the mandatory content is all so easy and stress free there should be no issue. And as long as you have a sprout icon you'll get a lot of leeway.

Unless you want to play one of the races that get unlocked by a later expansion, there is not really much reason not to use the shit out of the free trial, especially if you mostly wanna play solo anyway since most of the social features are restricted to limit bots. Most of the features not in the free trial are locked behind the main story quest anyway.

All new abilities seem to just be a continuation for classes pre-existing aoe spells. It even looks like Warrior's cover is an aoe why else would it shield the WoL like it did in the animation?

You have the criterions which require aoe since you're on a time limit with them and the trash themselves are considered bosses. But most people tend to ignore that as "spicy" content.
Was at the enrage for the last boss in the first one. But two people could not do the tether cutting in the cramped spot without clipping and causing wipes. Every fricking time.

Limsa is going to be so peaceful for me, the only time I felt at peace and enjoyed that city was when I very first started playing and I was in an instance of Limsa all on my own.

Things changed once you got Homam gear and wyrm armet and were fully decked out. I could solo greater colibri on drg while waiting for merit partys to get setup. Some of my favorite merit partys were full pierce drg/drg/drg/cor/brd/rdm.

People asked for this before. A long time ago, as I recall. Lots of additions to FFXIV are directly tied to fan feedback. It can just take years to actually find its way into the game.
It's because modders are outpacing devs now that XIV has become a modder safehaven. Contrary to popular belief, the devs do care about their image and they know that mods make them look bad, which is why EW and DT are seeing unprecedented levels of QoL additions. If XIV never became the Skyrim of MMIs, you'd never damage type indicators, job icons and roles as part of character names, in-game voidlist and filter, mount banking, etc.
I agree the modding community has pushed things along. Though I don't recall a mod that makes mounts bank. But I find it funny that SE has been using the modding community has a free, beta testing ground, where they just have to see what mods become popular and then copy them lol.

A bunch of small changes in Iceborne were ripped straight off the "most downloaded" mods list for MHW like the option for a light pillar on monster shiny drops
I like that they're basically now just yoinking mods for QoL features at an accelerated rate. It can only serve to push XIV along and make it better.

There are a bunch of companies that do that, either officially or unofficially. Bethesda obviously (Todd even said he uses SkyUI), Bioware used mods as a benchmark for their Mass Effect remaster, CDPR's Cyberpunk update incorporated a lot of things modders had already fixed, etc.

Exactly like that? No. But everything has inertia, and a sharp turn looks jarring on every mount, even if it's an inanimate object. Almost any flying mount could benefit from some degree of banking.

What I interpreted it as when I watched & listened was for stuff like Ozma and honestly I think ozma banking mid flight would be fricking weird.

Why would the hair be exclusive? We used to get a new haircut on release every expansion. SB even gave us 2. Only EW skipped this because SHB circlejerk was at an all-time peak so they wanted meteor to keep the look which newbies knew him by.

Nothing. They probably just wanna keep them unique.
(That is to say the current Gaius, Aymeric, etc. faces are usually not made with the same proportions so the hair wouldn't fit right, but they could very easily adapt that for players and make it work. If they wanted.)

Patches usually frick vfx/moveset mods, so a new expansion mod will almost definitely do so as well. I might actually stop playing reaper for a bit because the sin eater-themed reaper mod is probably going to be broken and I hate vanilla reaper's whole theme
My questions (directed at no one here, just more so the situation) now are:
Since they said all zones will be done in 7.0, does that mean they're done done and won't get any touch-ups beyond that?
How will they do gear? How long will it take to get all gear in the game updated, and will they look any better at all before they get their proper manual update?
How about NPCs?
Gear will be done in stages so there will be some horrifically outdated sets mixed with some newer stuff. Old minor npcs will look like ass while they will make sure the ones the players will focus on are all updated.
Some of the changes to texture filtering and materials will still apply without specific changes. Like that potato NPC they showed.
Mainly materials and lighting.
The new shader style they use isn't really something they can flip-flop between. PBR is just how it is now, which means that it has roughness and metalness values, as well as some other values.
They'll react differently to lighting and shadows than the previous system and things will look different because of that. It's basically like switching to a different rendering software in blender.
Gear will still look different as a result of them going over to PBR shaders, which fundamentally react differently to things, and different/upgraded lighting.
But it obviously will look better after a manual pass by the art teams to upscale the diffuse and normal maps and assign the right metallicness/roughness shader values to parts that require a different finish (like tiny metal embellishments on otherwise soft satiny gear)

SGE is pretty fun, like SCH but packed with AOE and flexibility.

Ah yeah, the DPS rotation doesn't change much, phlegma, toxicon, e. dosis & dosis w/ pneuma.
Once you get to a baseline of like 40-50~ you get your OGCD heals and mitigation to weave in to recover MP then there's a lot of AOE heals & shields stacked in to 80/90 with a couple of healing boosts.
It's very cosy to play in dungeons, you get in the rhythm of dropping kerachone, then a taurochole on a tank followed by druo, get your charge back, panhaima, holos etc on the wall pulls to boss.

Technically you can't reach any aether currents until after Estinien sacrificed himself to create wind. Just gameplay wise your compass tells you it's there. There's no aether currents in the first area.

The story/JRPG stuff is the main appeal as far as I can tell, but the story doesn't actually get good until Heavensward, which you don't unlock until level 50. Looking back on it and doing the occasional roulettes, I genuinely have no idea how I slogged through ARR, it's horrible.

If ARR was how the game's story was I'd have clocked out in HW and not gone back. Whatever I hate with SB or christ even EW's patch content nothing is as bad and soulless as ARR. Just think about how much resonance (because it actually invested in their development) the scions and your friends were by endwalker versus the "Lahabrea defeated by a magical girl scene of the power of friendship of these jackasses who use you as an uber-delivery-driver and the city state leaders who throw you to the wolves in a few patches and who except for Raubahn have frick all of any charisma towards you at this point".

Yeah they seemed to develop a self awareness with HW. I can't fault ARR too much because it was emergency fixing a half-sinking ship, and hindsight being 20/20 and all. Most of the content has roulettes to keep older content alive for the most part. You might be waiting in queues a bit for things like alliance raids. But you can pretty much do 90% of the content in the game. But its really just a story game that you play through, if you're not looking to play and get invested in a story you probably won't enjoy the game.
The long storyline sounds fine, I love Final Fantasy games in general and I've never minded story-heavy games. I've played most of the Yakuza games for example.

Unless you want to play one of the races that get unlocked by a later expansion, there is not really much reason not to use the shit out of the free trial, especially if you mostly wanna play solo anyway since most of the social features are restricted to limit bots. Most of the features not in the free trial are locked behind the main story quest anyway.
This games like PoE, people start it and quit after a few weeks/months then come back over and over till they get hooked. Free trials the best choice since odds are you will either get burned out during post arr or during the early parts of stormblood.

Just follow the MSQ and do the oher stuff at your leasure and as it catches your interest. You don't even need to group for mandatory content and can just use npcs, not that it matters because the mandatory content is all so easy and stress free there should be no issue. And as long as you have a sprout icon you'll get a lot of leeway.

You can run through dungeons with NPCs if you're socially moronic.

There's an entire system in the game called Sprouts for new players which gives you an icon above your character if you're new. People know when they see that you're new and in ff14 sprouts are treated very well, it's the most noob friendly mmo I've ever played.

All new abilities seem to just be a continuation for classes pre-existing aoe spells. It even looks like Warrior's cover is an aoe why else would it shield the WoL like it did in the animation?

You have the criterions which require aoe since you're on a time limit with them and the trash themselves are considered bosses. But most people tend to ignore that as "spicy" content.

Because nothing about the gameplay is being changed, which needs some love but it continues to be ignored. Watching the fanfest should've gave you an accurate gauge on how the playerbase is. When gameplay features were being announced no one was ecstatic but the moment more dye channels were announced everyone went into a craze. Even Yoshi P himself was a little bit vexxed.
There was nothing to be excited for in any of the other announcements, they're standard expansion features. The only gameplay thing to get hyped for was the return of field operations.
