The law says you should try everything possible to bring any suspect in alive, even if they are attacking you. It can end up in trial, and then you have to convince people (who are all told that cops are bad and kill blacks for no reason) that you had no other recourse. Legally it doesn't matter if you morally did the right thing by removing a criminal willing to murder.
