They didn't. FFX was impressive graphically, but was also the beginning of the end for the series as a whole. The series peaked with the PSX games then promptly shit the bed with the PS2 games

I haven't played the NES games, but for me 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 were all great. 10 was linear and I didn't like how every zone felt like I was fighting the same monsters from the last zone but reskinned. I still thought it was an alright game though. I also enjoyed 12, and I enjoyed it much more than 10. Throw in other Square games like CT/CC, Parasite Eve, Xenogears, etc and frick what a great studio.
