Final Fantasy XVI is a time flop. It sold well, but its fanbase is dead, and people don't even remember it anymore. It was generic, melodramatic, and boring. It was a corporate project (it was also shilled by its producer YoshiP) that represented how you can play it safe to make sure your game sells.
There are games (such as FFVII, FFX, etc.) that can be considered timeless successes because not only were they successful, but they still have a sizable fanbase, and people still remember them as one of the masterpieces of the medium. FFXVI has none of these things.
People reference the number of support it gets (which only started picking up I called them out on their shilling), but that doesn't mean it's not a time flop. It's a very small number of MMObese drones being paid to artificially create an impression that the game still has a fanbase after it released. Just look at the Unique Posters to Posts ratio in every thread. It will be wildly unbalanced, especially in comparison to games with an actual legacy (FFT, Vagrant Story, etc) which have a far more balanced ratio while also having a greater volume of posts.
Not to mention the threads are Ganker tier shitposting and some OPs are made by blatant Square Enix CBU3 employees. Any negative opinion or fact about the game will be met with confused mumbling from the few that still defend this trash. Not even the people that were paid to keep threads up care about defending anymore, it's that soulless and pointless.
The bottom line is that FFXVI has no cultural legacy whatsoever, even in comparison to other bad FFs like XIII or XV, and is sustained entirely by dishonest support.

You know why the mainline FF is DMC and not that shitty souls clone? It's because Square is BASED and knows better. XV was just the humble start: future FF games will be rivaling DMC and Tales in terms of action gameplay while also being JRPG kino.

pretty much the beginning of the end. Skyrim came out shortly after. General consensus was games with big shitty inflated open world features are better than short, better digestable and replayable games. We are here where we are now partly because of the XIII hate. Now there are like 4 japanese companies you can consistently rely on to make actual playable games which have the purpose of being games.

I think X was the start of the "we want to make movies" mentality at squeenix, but I'll always have a bias toward XII because I like the setting and gameplay but yeah I can see why people hate it. I never bothered playin XIII I just know I hate the characters and the gameplay looks like busy work. If Versus 13 came out as planned then literally half of FF's entire lifespan will have been FF13. I don't think that game deserves to be half of the entire FF brand.

I feel like I'm crazy saying this but I swear the demo played way better than the full game on release. That said, I don't know why people trash 7R so much. To me its the pinnacle of action rpg combat. Only thing its missing is team attacks. Tales of Arise is scratching a similar itch but its just not the same.

Also I think this narrative is false given the little gameplay we did see. The environments are above anything in XV.
