Sony really didn't nurture its IPs the way Nintendo did. Part of the reason Smash works well is because of Nintendo's core series which are decades old and have lots of games on lots of different Nintendo console. Sony creates new IPs to chase trends and abandon them just as quickly. Even publishers like Capcom, Namco or Konami, despite all their faults, have nurtured their IPs better than Sony.
Those characters are ugly as shit. The one seriously looks like an elf version of the guy from Offspring or Guy Fieri or something.

First game was charming, second game was divisive but still a good experience, third game was more or less the same. They're fine-tuned games if nothing else, you can see all the touches and details as you play it. Naughty Dog's talent back then was next to none, only Rare could match with them.

Some studios simply don't want to continue making new games for IPs and just want to move on and do something new
IIRC Sony did try to make other studios they were working with/own become inheritors to those IPs (or provide lower budgeted handheld equivalents before the Vita was put down) but because they weren't built from the ground up for that purpose (like say 343) they naturally didn't want to be stuck as the leftovers devs
I'd say that's partially because Smash has already covered nearly all the essential characters. Only place to go from here is C/D listers in popular franchises, new IPs and "retro" franchises. Also I know people hate Dark Dawn but Golden Sun was still on two consoles.
I think it's also that Nintendo has an aesthetic that is very similar in most of their games. In Playstation All-Stars it looks extremely ugly because of all of the characters clashing.
Early on I think Sony specifically didn't want IP's of their own, which is why they didn't really have 1st party studios but rather just bought the ones that seemed most popular with the tech knowledge to back it up.
In addition to that most Sony characters are really specific characters. I could probably write an essay on who Nathan Drake or Kratos is but all I need to describe Mario is "he is a plumber wearing a red hat with an 'M' on it, he also jumps really high" and that is literally everything you need to know about Mario. Less specific a character is, the more of a mascot that character becomes.

Only OG Kratos is particularly iconic. The issue with 2018 Kratos is that, aside from his colors getting even more muted and washed out, they introduced more elements to his design that make him less distinct and comprehensible in design. His design is getting cluttered

Its really funny how she's in fricking Genshin Impact of all things. She's the only collab character after 4 years, and Genshin only got permission to have cross-play with the PC and mobile versions immediately after that collab.
The funny thing is that Aloy is genuinely one of the worst, if not THE worst characters in the game. She even got an exclusive weapon for her, only available to Playstation characters. And despite being literally made for her, its also really shit and you're better off using other weapons on her instead.
People don't even play Aloy for memes in this game, a lot of genshin players seriously forget she exists.
Even knowing that Hulst runs SCE now and came from the company that made Aloy, it's still baffling. The only way the games look even moderately successful is by packing them in with the console (in HFW's case, when the system was severely supply constrained so people would have bought it with anything).

Of course, it doesn't necessarily have to be illegal money. You can use the above tactics legally to make your company look like it's worth more than it actually is. This can help appease shareholders, help you get more money out of selling your company, or simply helps justify you keeping your job to someone higher than you (ie actual Sony, the conglomerate).

Every single game is basically just a port of the first game, because there isn't much you can do with it before you turn it into something completely different. Hell she was even in Genshin for some fricking reason (though I heard she's the worst character in the game)

If this turns into mugen than the idea of a character being included being seen as a sort of badge of recognition will be far less meaningful.
Unrelated but I feel there shouldn't even be an option for a mode without items. Tournaments should use items because that's the way the game was meant to be played. Same goes for only choosing the solid stages. "Pros" shouldn't be cowards and let the moving maps be involved.

Yeah, I think it's a safe bet that Smash Ultimate: Complete Edition is all we're gonna be getting on the next console. There's still a feeling with this series that the devs can't top Ultimate's roster, and they don't know what to do with it right now.

They already said that the choice for Smash when developing Ultimate was to either go the route that they did, or do a complete overhaul. Now that Ultimate is done I'm pretty sure they're going to give Option B a try now for the next one, what that overhaul entails, who knows.
At most I could see them do like a Switch 2 exclusive season pass for 5 new characters, just to get people to buy the game again. If not, I have no idea. After Ultimate how do you bring things back to something like 64 or Melee?

In like 10 years, nobody will even remember this franchise exists outside of Sony announcing Horizon 10 and Horizon Funko Frenzy Adventures, and Horizon 5 remaster remake.
Both turning over a genuine new life without amnesia or any other bullshit excuse, but also giving up criminal and corrupt deeds would have been the best ending. Could still happen with a Sly 5 or 6, hell even Penelope could still get redeemed since she escapes and all (and making her evil was just awkward). Just about any lead dev/company would want their game character in Smash. It's a sign that the game franchise really made the big leagues in many people's eyes.
The difference is that Aloy and Horizon as a whole feels like a video game version of an industry plant. Like the games are alright, but there's nothing spectacular about them. They didn't break new ground. Narratively they're run of the mill. Aloy isn't an interesting character in her own right. It's just kinda there.
It doesn't have the ultra-violence appeal God of War did, or the credit of being one of the first adventure platformers that Tomb Raider has, or the appealing scrimblo mascot that Spyro and Crash has. It's just...kinda there.

Sony really didn't nurture its IPs the way Nintendo did. Part of the reason Smash works well is because of Nintendo's core series which are decades old and have lots of games on lots of different Nintendo console. Sony creates new IPs to chase trends and abandon them just as quickly. Even publishers like Capcom, Namco or Konami, despite all their faults, have nurtured their IPs better than Sony.

I'd say that's partially because Smash has already covered nearly all the essential characters. Only place to go from here is C/D listers in popular franchises, new IPs and "retro" franchises. Also I know people hate Dark Dawn but Golden Sun was still on two consoles.
I think it's also that Nintendo has an aesthetic that is very similar in most of their games. In Playstation All-Stars it looks extremely ugly because of all of the characters clashing.
Early on I think Sony specifically didn't want IP's of their own, which is why they didn't really have 1st party studios but rather just bought the ones that seemed most popular with the tech knowledge to back it up.
In addition to that most Sony characters are really specific characters. I could probably write an essay on who Nathan Drake or Kratos is but all I need to describe Mario is "he is a plumber wearing a red hat with an 'M' on it, he also jumps really high" and that is literally everything you need to know about Mario. Less specific a character is, the more of a mascot that character becomes.

Every single game is basically just a port of the first game, because there isn't much you can do with it before you turn it into something completely different. You can get away with selling a new Bomberman every console generation for people who haven't played it in a long time and want a decent couch multiplayer game when there's company over, and that's it. Better question is will there even be another Smash? Sooner or later, sure. Nintendo probably doesn't want to give up on Smash but will Sakurai be involved? Unrelated but I feel there shouldn't even be an option for a mode without items. Tournaments should use items because that's the way the game was meant to be played. Same goes for only choosing the solid stages. "Pros" shouldn't be cowards and let the moving maps be involved.

Yeah, I think it's a safe bet that Smash Ultimate: Complete Edition is all we're gonna be getting on the next console. There's still a feeling with this series that the devs can't top Ultimate's roster, and they don't know what to do with it right now.

They already said that the choice for Smash when developing Ultimate was to either go the route that they did, or do a complete overhaul. Now that Ultimate is done I'm pretty sure they're going to give Option B a try now for the next one, what that overhaul entails, who knows.

I think Kirby is considerably easier to make than Smash. If you've seen his youtube channel the idea of delegating isn't in his vocabulary. He really goes into the finer details. If there's any developer I can safely say breathes gaming it's Sakurai.

Chun-Li, Lara and Samus seem written in stone. Even after the reboot classic Lara still retains a massive amount of popularity and recognition, which is why every crossover is always with classic Lara. Other characters like Cortana, Jill Valentine, Princess Peach, Tifa, maybe Yuna from FFX as well, they'll come and go depending on the whims of the industry.

Just about any lead dev/company would want their game character in Smash. It's a sign that the game franchise really made the big leagues in many people's eyes.
The difference is that Aloy and Horizon as a whole feels like a video game version of an industry plant. Like the games are alright, but there's nothing spectacular about them. They didn't break new ground. Narratively they're run of the mill. Aloy isn't an interesting character in her own right. It's just kinda there.
It doesn't have the ultra-violence appeal God of War did, or the credit of being one of the first adventure platformers that Tomb Raider has, or the appealing scrimblo mascot that Spyro and Crash has. It's just...kinda there.
