Claude spends the almost entirety of GW saying "we have to kill Rhea in order for a few casualties as possible". If you act on the treaties to shelter the Central Church, you're branded an enemy to Adrestia as a whole. If you stay silent, it's assumed that you implicitly support the Southern Church, meaning you believe your own ratification as a nation, which the Central Church helped make, is fake. If it's fake, then you're on stolen Adrestian land and are a traitorous Adrestian citizen, even 400 years after Adrestia started treating you as a separate country. No matter what you do, Edelgard's declaration of war will vest and she will have propaganda to feed the war hawks and daily grind soldiers alike.

Thanks to the previous posters I figured it out. Alois' raid is the branching point. If any of those red-arrow units reach Rodrigue's position then you are locked into the bad ending and you get a Bad News sound effect. It is a rather inconsequential-seeming event but that's what the entire mission hinges on.
That's why you're given the scout strategy and the strategy that closes the gates.
You need both if you want to easily get the good result.
You're supposed to clear the mission without defeating Byleth, kill Randolph first

By keeping the Slithers near her, Edelgard was able to find out where they were located, had them wear down the kingdom and church which made it easier for conquer. Edelgard was able to flip the table and more efficiently dismantle them than in Hopes where she snitches on them and the scatter in all directions (this later bites her in the ass).
No matter how you try to to flow around it, you won't be able to excuse working with the Slither to me. Like I think church is ion the wrong, but holy frick I think the Slither are way worst and you just let them get away with so many terrible things for years and years becuase "lol I needed them for now to get at the church".

A few things you should know
Silver Snow gimps you out of 1 unit post timeskip. While most chapter missions will permit you 12 units, Silver Snow only permits you 11. No other route is like this.
Some units (Cyril, Catherine, and Hilda) cannot be recruited until chapter 12. I believe Cyril and Catherine will auto recruit during chapter 12 but Hilda still requires a C Axe rank and 30(?) Charm to recruit.
Seteth is excellent right out of the gate and is your de facto Lord of that route. Technically Byleth is the official Lord but since Byleth is mute, most of the narrative momentum will be carried by Seteth and sometimes Flayn.

Do Cindered Shadows first. Namely because the Wolves are available for recruiting in Chapter 2 of the main game and their respective classes become available once you hit lv20. Also Yuri gives nice little tidbits of lore concerning some early game missions

And you either have to burn a pulse from bullshit or reload.

I'm gonna be honest, when I did this route, the only one who had the stats to stand up to the White beasts was Byleth, so I just solo'd the map with him, a full inventory, and his combat spells unlocked.
I broke so many swords that day. Thank god for the Convoy. Wasn't that hard that way though, still took like 95 turns, mostly fighting Rhea.
The last time I did Silver Snow it was the "Seteth, Ferdinand, and Bernadetta do everything while the rest of the class tries not to die" show. I went out of my way to recruit every student so Byleth himself ended up extremely mediocre

And that the Kingdom army would pressure the Western border by Arundel territory while Claude and the remainder of his forces would pressure the Great Bridge of Myrrdin on the Eastern front. And while Edelgard's splits her forces to deal with both, both Dimitri and Claude would blitz Garreg Mach and take it back

How long is this cooldown? The nukes get used in VW and SS as well. They blow up Fort Merceus. A month passes and Enbarr is taken. And then another month before Shambhala is assaulted and the nukes are used again. On the most generous set of circumstances possible there's a 2 month cooldown on the nukes. But that just leads to a bunch of logistical questions. Even if the Imperial Army was able to limp its way to Enbarr and recover completely, why not just deploy them 1 month later? The only counters to the nukes were The Immaculate One and the shield surrounding Garreg Mach. If the Immaculate One is dead and Edelgard isn't at Garreg Mach anymore, then why not just fire on her then? There's no reason for them to work together anymore.
The answer is simple, KT wanted to give Edelgard a happy end come hell or high water. Even if it made no sense.
Their own stupidity really. Their end goal was to retake the surface but they couldn't because they feared the last Naabatean and she was held up in Garreg Mach which was surrounded by Sothis's Shield. In the other routes Rhea is captured immediately by Edelgard doesn't kill her as a counter to the Slitherers so the Slitherers continue to play ball during the war. But during CF the last Naabatean is dead. The nukes are now impossible to counter. Thales, at least, is able to deploy and use the nukes and a full month passes between him nuking Arianrhod and the Battle at Fhirdiad. So the battered Black Eagle Strike Force kills Rhea and... nothing. They just go into a second shadow war for no real reason
