Here’s a real redpill for you. WoW’s lead narrative director is a man and his name is Steve Danuser. He is responsible for the lore atrocity that was BFA and Shadowlands. Nathanos was his OC donut steel and Sylvanas was his waifu, which is why after doing all she did she still got to live. He is genuinely awful and is one of the many contributing factors to wows narrative declining. The other factor is because Blizzard keeps hiring woke liberals to write their supplementary lore, which is why half the characters in the game are gay and trans now. Some of them are female, yes, but it’s less to do with the fact that they’re women and more about the fact that they’re left wing extremists

Original writers apart from the lead basically either were moved to different projects or left. Chris Metzen is what makes Warcraft authentic, Steve Danuser is an unironic cuckold that brags about his cuckold novels on twitter. Christie Golden was also brought on as a senior wittier in 2017, previously only having done contracted short term work, so you are correct - Steve Danuser and Christie Golden are generally understood to be handling the lore now (in game and in books, respectively) whereas earlier it was largely Chris Metzens work (though he had his own flaws, like the ‘green Jesus’ era)

WoW always had shit narrative. Trying to tell a central story in an MMO is a fricking moronic idea that has ultimately ruined the Warcraft universe unless they just retcon everything if they ever make WC4, but they won't. Even if they did they wouldn't write anything any better.
Good MMOs do environmental story telling and use in world characters to provide perspectives and small in scope stories that don't overshadow the story that players have built for their own characters. There is no overarching story, just a world and characters living in it. If you want an overarching story, make a single player game.

That is part of the issue with escalation. By the time you get to where you are throwing down with eldritch monsters, mega dragons, elemental lords and all that world ending shit its hard ton ust be considered some scrub
wut. WoW lore always revered your character. It's kind of a requirement in these games to make your character be cool in the story.

That's literally the opposite of what happens in vanilla. Your character is an integral part of the plot whereas post WotLK your character is just some guy who gets to watch cutscenes, or sit around dead while npcs do stuff (actually starts happening with Maiev in BT but she actually contributes to the fricking fight.)

It has been since WotLK. Seriously go watch the wrathgate cinematic. If I remember right it has shit like "About time you showed up!" and "I couldn't let you have all the fun." and the villian goes "We will never forgive, we will never forget." or something along those lines. It's all concentrated cringe that could be taken straight from a Marvel film.
It was great, and the overwhelming impulse to recreate it is what set WoW on the path to turning into the garbage it is today.

Wrathgate was a perfect example on how to display story in MMOs and other MMOs absolutely took inspiration from it. It was actually fantastic. The story and build up to it, and the fact it wasn't littered with cutscenes made it that much better.
The problem is that whoever they brought in after WotLK looked at it and thought "CUTSCENE GOOD" and completely misunderstood what made it great.

I never felt like a big important guy in vanilla. Crucially, levelling and spending time in the world played a much bigger role and that involved shit like exploring comfy zones and helping some guy mourning his wife or helping a farmer with his farm or something. Right from the get go in the new expansions you're single handedly repelling invasions and shit atop a dragon mount launching fireballs down and killing hundreds of troops.
This is because vanilla was the literal beginning of the game. You're just a little shit out of Durotar. By the time you get to Burning Crusade, you've literally killed gods. It makes zero sense to make your character go back to picking up bear shit for farmers after that.
I don't think I've ever personally known a single person that gave a shit about the wow story and I've played since vanilla.
i've played since vanilla and there was always a few loregays in every guild i've ever been in. lore was always a huge discussion around this game. it was actually quite good, at least comic book level. some real iconic shit like Arthas purging stratholme. up to WotLK was good. after that it went in the fricking gutter. my guess is that they hired female writers. also what the frick is up with locking the story behind actual books? who the frick wants to read books to understand a story in a video game?
