Do you have any source behind this? The only thing I've ever seen is a photo op they did together when Kirby won an award at a game award show which doesn't really signify friendship as much as it does "they took a photo together because one of them made him and the other one makes him"

Sakurai rarely acknowledges the existence of Kirby games he didn't make, making Kirby Air Ride, a spinoff, seem more important than other Kirby games.
Sakurai literally said on one of his videos that he was involved with every kirby game they released up until he left. He even mentioned that he was involved with kirby's avalanche in another video.

Smash Bros Ultimate is the highest selling fighting game on one platform (SF2 is the highest selling fighting game overall I believe) so I doubt he's too concerned about taking every win out there.
