invisible walls in a open world game is a good thing if not you have to put death claws everywhere you don't want the player to go because super mutants aren't a real challenge unless it's going up black mountain where there's like 20 of them with night kin all at one corner of the entrance

In case of Fallout 3 in particular, the main problem was how DESPERATE Beth was at the time to court the average Gen7 mainstream players.
Beth has became a cynical, jaded and exploitative company with Oblivion, but they do regularly switch up their target demographics based on what is the current biggest, dumbest crowd. With Fo4, for an example, they were heavily leaning into the the post Minecraft era kids, with the emphasis on the procedural elements and the base building and resource and crafting elements.
With Fo3, the biggest audience were the CoD and Halo fanbases. The "push a button, something awesome happens" crowd, who loved their epic unique scripted events, regardless of how interactive they are.
This is why Oblivion and Fo3 had this massive emphasis on these scripted, out-of-place "unique" setpieces moments. The daedra and dark brotherhood quests in Oblivion, the Behemoth fight, tranquility line or Liberty Prime in Fo3 were direct products of Beth doing what they thought would appeal to these CoD kiddies: "cool" setpieces with extremely curbed actual interactivity. That was the mass appeal secret of 7th gen era gaming. Much like crafting and open world would became in 8th gen.

Recently started a TTW playthrough and got reminded of that moronic segment when you're at project purity just before enclave arrives, where dad tells you do this, come back, now to this other thing there, come back etc.
I don't think I ever got that far into the main quest. People meme Bethesda plots but even Oblivion and Skyrim had more engaging main quests, after reaching Rivet City for the first time I always end up fricking around for a dozen more hours then I uninstall.
The Fade in Dragon Age Origins is a 2 hour slog where it plays exactly the same no matter what character you build and play as. It was so bad one of the first mods was an option to skip it entirely.

I was so excited for this DLC, being from Pittsburgh and the bridge was very cool. Then you go through the door and my disappointment was never ending.

I unironically replayed the game just to see the bad karma outcomes of this part earlier this year. After finishing it and seeing those fricking vampire quests I had to uninstall.
Just skip it using the sound pattern, I've owned fallout 3 since it came out and not once in any play-through done the stupid slasher thing
